Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all. Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.
Izzywizz I have had two knees and a hip replaced under spinal anaesthetic with sedation. I knew nothing about the operation . I went into theatre around 2 pm at 5 pm I was sitting up in bed eating my evening meal.
I requested spinal anaesthesia for TKR and was told it’s the preferred option for both hips and knees. The anaesthetist was very reassuring. Sedation ensured I knew not a thing until surgery was over. No nausea, a light meal once back on the ward. It was more than worth it. You’ll be fine izzy, please don’t be terrified.
I had a spinal as well but was totally unaware of what was going on. I woke up at the end if the surgery almost immediately after it ended, I was worried about surgery too which is why I started this thread, and was reassured by many who had had it done, and really is was fine and being pain free was brilliant. Keep in touch. Any questions, just ask. Good luck izxywhiz
Izzywhiz I had a spinal anaesthetic when I had my last knee replaced. I was talked into it and I was fine. I did not want to hear people talking or hammering and banging, I would have it done again if and when my hip is replaced.
Good luck, normally it would be the best time of year and this awful weather should improve.
Izzywhiz I had hip surgery under spinal anaesthetic in December. Also had light sedation so I was aware of what was going on, but didn’t feel a thing. Most hip and knee replacements are now performed under spinal anaesthesia as the recovery time is quicker. Really not scary. Good luck with your operation.
Hi Grans, Facing THR surgery very soon. (Totally terrified!) May I ask if anyone has had a hip replaced under spinal anaesthesia, and not a general anaesthetic..? Seems to be a possible option these days..(but is it even more scary)? It seems to be a possible option
zacouma I think I have future-proofed my house but it has been a long process.
After my first knee replacement many moons ago I could not get in or out of my front door without mega difficulty because the path or whatever had dropped. It is fine now because I had the path raised and thankfully it is a short one!
I have a stairlift and also use a shower all of the time. I had to have my bath removed as it was like sinking the Titanic and then I had mega problems getting out,
I could write a book but if you or anybody else has specific problems please PM me.
I am partially sighted which does not really help!
Should have said good luck to all considering or waiting for replacements and speedy recoveries to those who have recently had ops. It’s all worth it in the end.
7 months on from my hip replacement and very happy with it. Also 10 years on from two knee replacements.I can walk a good couple of miles with no pain and yesterday spent three hours working in the garden after walking around the garden centre all morning. This time last year even the garden centre would have been too much.
I lost two stones in an attempt to defer a hip replacement. The surgeon was impressed but the op went ahead. Losing weight was good for my general health I suppose. (It's all safely back on now though!)
Sorry for all those of you in pain and not sleeping. I'm wondering please if anybody has any preventative measures they could suggest. I feel worried after 30 plus years of aches and pains and very steep stairs what I can do to future proof myself.
I suppose a good start would be to shed some balast.
