Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

I have left 4 messages this week, with no return calls. 😡

Charleygirl5 Thu 24-Oct-24 10:20:06

Is that what is called an efficient, streamlined service? That would really irritate me.

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 09:03:33

I am bumping this up in case somebody has missed a tip or whatever.

Just picked up on this thread. I'm 2 weeks post total hip replacement. I usually wear running tights around the house as I was a regular runner (pre-op anyway!).

I'm dossing around in sweatpants at the moment and have just had the dressing off. Would you say I could wear tights now, or is loose clothing still the way to go? My backside is still bruised and quite sore.

Not sure if this might have been covered already, but why oh why does the NHS not do more preventative processes? In my case, I had been to see the practice physio (nb I could never get in front of a GP) twice and was told that I had a muscle issue.

I knew it was more than that and went private with me DHs company scheme, had an xray and was shown that I had grade 4 osteoarthritis and need both hips replaced!

By getting my left hip done now I should get another few years use from the right hip before needing that one done too.

Goodness knows what state I'd be in if I left it for the NHS to deal with - you have to wait so long, you are on your knees (sorry) before they even put you on a waiting list! Surely it's more cost effective to do an xray sooner and get in there sooner too as the surgery should be simpler if you just get on with it, instead of waiting and having to do more complex surgery on an older patient?

Hello ftm, welcome and congratulations on your new hip.
I think we all know the nhs is on its knees at present so most patients are referred to physiotherapy as a ‘preventative ‘ before an operation is decided on. Yes it’s a wait but if the pain is so severe it’s possible to have the operation brought forward. ( if you are lucky) but if you are covered privately then you have that choice.

As for clothing I would wear comfortable clothes rather than anything tight fitting but up to you of course. Shouldn't be too long before you are out walking, then running, but don’t rush it and try not to fall if you can help it. My consultant told me it takes up to 18 months to fully heal. I did have a fbad fall after 18 months but was lucky.

How is everyone.? Have you heard anything nannytopsy?

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 12:16:33

Rather than dropping off the bottom of Active I will bump this as 3 posts usually brings us to the top.
Here we go ?
Maybe 🤔

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 12:17:34

Nope, nada 👎

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 12:18:32

One more time

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 12:30:55

At last grin

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 12:38:22

I agree just wear whatever is comfortable and you can get the item of clothing on without dislocating your hip!

The physio appears to be the new GP. Some are experienced but others are not. It is such a waste of time. My last knee was replaced in 2018 I was xrayed, deemed grade 4, and referred but there I was seen 6 monthly before I said something. I ended up having a tibial osteotomy as well because of the time wastage.

I have to call bless I have spent the whole morning reading through this entire thread…. I know I know, it’s not as if I have things I should be attending to.
I think our thread has helped a lot of people, including me, and despite it hardly ever getting onto the Active list, we arent far from our 5 th iteration. Well who would have thought it? Not me for sure.
Greetings to all. flowers

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 14:03:18

Why don’t I check before I press send.,.I have to admit, not I have to call bless!

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 15:03:13

silverlining that is the reason I bump it up because we are in oblivion before we know it and there are always people wanting advice. It is difficult to find if you do not know it exists.

Aveline Fri 25-Oct-24 15:10:20

I took myself to private physio before I bothered the NHS as I like to do what I can for my own health if possible. However after a couple of sessions she said it was not just a matter of exercise and I needed to see an orthopaedic surgeon. I did. He said I had end stage arthritis and all the physio in the world couldn't improve it.
Don't be fobbed off with a physio referral as a delaying tactic.

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 15:21:11

I saw a physio about my painful hip/ back after a couple of bad falls. I had some vigorous massages which unfortunately made things worse, so she referred me to a consultant for an mri. I had the mri in August, but my appointment for results isn’t until end of next month.
I have waited so long, I may as well wait another 4 weeks for result, but waiting so long the pain has diminished somewhat. Hurrah. 🥳
Will report back.

Marg75 Fri 25-Oct-24 15:57:23

I'm starting to feel my right leg when I walk on hard ground, or going up & down stairs. Is it my hip do you think or a problem with my leg? Am seeing an NHS physio in a couple of weeks.

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 16:00:49

It is normally 6-8 weeks before the radiologist works his/her way through the backlog. It should have been seen by now and I would have thought if there was anything of concern seen you would have been contacted.

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 16:08:14

Marg, hello. When I first noticed my hip problem I was walking a coastal path in Cornwall and the pain was in my groin. I apologised to a passing jogger, explaining this sudden pain and apologised for my slowness, she told me it was my hip, and she was right.
I am sure the physio will be able to help. Come back to us if it does turn out to be your hip. Good luck. 🤞

silverlining48 Fri 25-Oct-24 16:09:44

Yes Charleygirl that was what I was thinking, I am happy to wait.

Nannytopsy Fri 25-Oct-24 18:44:55

Yes, the physios are there as a delaying tactic. I insisted on seeing a consultant “to get to the root of the issue” and it didn’t take that long. It’s the surgery that is the problem. I can’t go on the hip list until after a successful knee op but I had an MRI on the hip last week. The review appointment will be in 6 months time - seems ridiculous to have done the MRI already.
If your hip pain is on the outside of your thigh, it may be tendonitis.

Marg75 Fri 25-Oct-24 19:27:05

silverlining48, thanks, I'm hoping it won't be my hip.
Nannytopsy, my pain is on the outside of my thighs so maybe it's tendonitis.

Marg75 Fri 25-Oct-24 19:34:30

Thigh not thighs!

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 21:31:06

Marg you need to be seen by a doctor because there is a faint chance it could be related to your spine but it is more likely to come from your hip.

As silverlining said it usually starts in the groin when walking and if advanced like mine the pain in the groin is also at rest.
