Greetings hipsters and kneeknockers. It is with great pleasure and some surprise that we have reached episode number 4 in this 🧵. Welcome to all.
Onwards and forwards we go. Advice, support, encouragement and everything else available here.

Hammo maybe I am lucky but I have had 2 knee replacements and you get my ancient professional knowledge but I have been retired for over 20 years and the brain is a bit rusty. There is little we cannot answer and none of us want you spending money on unnecessary items.

Picker uppers are a necessity and if possible one downstairs and one up if you live in a house.

Now is the time to slowly get your house the way you will easily manage post surgery. Just ask because there is a lot to wade through.

That is why we try to keep this thread going because some people get good advice from it.

Thank you so very much for keeping this thread alive. It’s November 2024 and I am heading for a TKR in the coming months and I have just discovered this thread - and it’s invaluable! So many of my worries have been experienced by others and I am learning so much as I follow each post. A huge thanks to all. X

Just saw your new thread ftm. Your enthusiasm made me smile. grin. It was certainly the last thing on my mind. Oh yes it was!

I dont think it Woukd be a problem as long as it is firm but doesnt cut your blood supply off….
I have a selection and one of them used to curl up which was really uncomfortable. The others were ok and helped.
You might want to talk to a pharmacist, easier to get to than gp’s.

Has anyone used a knee support? I have an old one that I’ve had for years. I do feel better if I wear it but it’s a bit tight ( I have very chubby legs and my arthritic knee is an inch bigger than my good knee) and newer ones are made of better material. But there are so many on the market. I’ve looked at one called Activemove and another called Bearhug but I don’t know which one to go for.

You will get there ftm, start slowly, gentle walking, slowly increase speed and length of walk,; keep watching the videos and it won’t be long before you are off.
Something to look forward to.

Aveline: you sound just like my DH! He's never understood my love for running, but fast walking (maybe with Nordic poles?) is just as good. My argument for running as a fitness thing is that it's so adaptable, but so is walking!

I've been watching nordic walking youtube videos and it looks like you can really get your heart rate up and go quite fast. I'm not planning to start anytime soon, as it is too early yet, but nice to have something to plan for.

Aveline Sun 27-Oct-24 17:37:22

ftm420 why not just walk? It has the benefit of flexibility (location, length, pace, speed etc) plus you get some fresh air.

When I had my hip done in 19 I was sent to consultant after the xray was seen by my GP. However, when my knee was bad I was given exercises by online physio. I asked for an xray, then I when I saw the physio in person, he took one look at the xray and said that I needed surgery. Saw consultant in May, had new knee in November.

I agree with every word silverlining has said. I would seek medical advice as 2 weeks post-op is very early. 6-12 weeks is more the norm but please get advice.

I dont know what an elliptical is, so can’t comment but I think walking is as good as any exercise. You can always vary the speeds but take it easy still if you are only 2 weeks post op.

ftm420 Sun 27-Oct-24 12:24:55

Any thoughts on gym v working out at home on an elliptical? I've done both and am considering my options now. My gym membership is currently suspended as I'm only 2.5 weeks post thr.

I had an elliptical during lockdown with ifit workouts which I really enjoyed. I ran outside whenever I could, but found the elliptical quite fun with the ifit added. I sold it post covid, which I kind of regret now.

I'm not sure when to start going back to the gym (just to walk on the treadmill and / or use the elliptical there).

I only live about half a mile from my gym, so when I was going it's easy to walk to and I shower when I get home.

In terms of costs, I've seen a second hand one (by a make I'm familiar with so pretty good quality) for c£250 against the gym, which is £33pm (discounted rate as I'm a council employee).

Long term plan is to do longer walks with my dog and jog when I can. Maybe gym and home equipment are both unnecessary?!

We are dropping very fast though.

Aveline Sun 27-Oct-24 11:01:44

Hooray!

silverlining48 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:56:23

Eureka it’s worked.

silverlining48 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:55:42

Here’s to the fourth try.

silverlining48 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:55:12

Trying for a third time 🍀 lucky three

silverlining48 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:53:49

Didn’t work , so here’s another bump

Charleygirl5 Sun 27-Oct-24 10:48:36

Thought I would bump it up

ftm420 if you have managed okay until now there is no point risking dislocation because that is another ball game if you go down that route!

Times have changed for the good. The original Stanmore hips were made for somebody to eventually do the housework and shopping pain free. Riding a horse or running was out of the question in those days.

ftm420 Sat 26-Oct-24 08:58:33

Charleygirl5: thinking about it, the tights are fine once they're on but the waist elastic is quite tight (to stop them falling down whilst I'm running) so I suspect a dislocation would be a real risk whilst trying to get my feet in the legs. I'll leave that as a 'target' for now.

Charleygirl5 Fri 25-Oct-24 23:13:09

Maizie you have done really well. It depends which part of the country you live in when and even how you are treated. I am amazed you are riding at 3 months- please do not fall off the horse!

I have been referred to a neurosurgical unit for another part of my anatomy and there is a 2 year waiting list for the 1st appointment. As I am 81 there is a chance I may not make that and as for major surgery, forget it! This is London.

MaizieD Fri 25-Oct-24 22:47:27

In my area it is a physio who assesses you before referring to a consultant. I had been stoical for far too long about my painful hip. The physio took one look at the xray and said he didn't have to try any manipulation because it was obvious I needed a new hip.

Within 2 weeks I was offered a choice of 5 centres where I could have it done, 3 NHS hospitals and two private, where I could have the op as an NHS patient. From initial physio assessment to op was 4 months (it could have been sooner but we had a holiday and a family event planned) I think we must be very lucky in Durham.

I'm 12 weeks on from the op now. I got on a horse again for the first time for years last weekend. 😆 And I can cut my toenails...

The NHS don't do follow up physio for hips, but I had a few sessions with the physio at the private hospital I chose (on the recommendation of friends) That was definitely worthwhile and worth paying for. He was very unconventional and had me working on closing the angle at my hip joint to far less than 90degrees within a fortnight. He said that the danger of dislocation was minimal... He is head of the department, so I think he is OK on that..

I am over the moon with my new hip, it's wonderful to be able to do normal things, pain free. definitely worth a few weeks of post op discomfort.

Marg75 Fri 25-Oct-24 22:11:54

I'll see the Physio on the 7th November and take it from there. I'll report back after!

Aveline Fri 25-Oct-24 21:32:49

Mine wasn't in the groin. Just a pain in my hip every time I took a step. I had a good range of movement too.
