Prior to having surgery did anyone find that a Revitive helped? I need to strengthen my leg muscles.

MayBee70 Wed 18-Sept-24 00:03:21

I’ve seen ice packs recommended on a Facebook page I’m following. Has anyone used them?

Charleygirl5 Tue 17-Sept-24 23:13:27

Maybee I doubt if you will because you will be given anti coagulants in the form of a daily injection- mine was for a month I think. Also when sitting it is good practice to to move your feet every hour if sitting with your legs raised.

You also will be up and about going to the loo, making coffee or whatever. I had no help so had to do everything for myself.

For various reasons, I lead a fairly sedentary life now and I am fine. I do have varicose veins.

cornergran Tue 17-Sept-24 23:10:39

My legs are never on display because of veins. Like you maybee I carry weight in my thighs. I asked the surgeon at the first appointment, he said varicose veins are no problem and just advised keeping the skin well hydrated and strengthening thigh muscles pre surgery. The TKR has been very successful, no problems associated with veins. Why not ask the surgeon in outpatients when an appointment is offered. I suspect you’re worrying for nothing. Good luck with the surgery.

Has anyone had a TKR but suffered from pretty bad varicose veins? I know I’ll probably need a knee replacement at some point but, although I do look quite slim all of my weight is in my legs and, not only are my thighs pretty huge and full of cellulite I have terrible varicose veins, too. I worry about a post op dvt because of the veins.

That is very true. It used to be possible on the NHS but not nowadays unless one moves.

Aveline Fri 06-Sept-24 21:31:47

Depends if you're paying or not!

Charleygirl5 Fri 06-Sept-24 18:33:48

Aveline that is not really possible.

Nannytopsy Fri 06-Sept-24 15:16:52

This is a new one because my first one is so busy! 😡

Aveline Thu 05-Sept-24 11:59:30

So frustrating for you Nannytopsy. How about another consultant?

Nannytopsy Thu 05-Sept-24 11:53:37

Hello all! I regularly phone the booking clerks and now they say there are no theatre slots for my consultant in September. Maybe October …
I have my 3rd pre-op next week as the previous two expired without a date coming up. This has been going on since February.

Aveline Thu 05-Sept-24 08:10:37

Good to hear silverlining. I still revel in my pain free knees and hip. Have a great time in Italy.

silverlining48 Wed 04-Sept-24 21:37:19

Hello all from a very hot Tuscany especially those who have recently acquired new hips or knees.
I have walked miles this week and the joy of being pain free remains with me despite my operation being over 2 years ago,
Be patient it takes a little while but soon you will be enjoying walking soon,
Ciao 👋

Charleygirl5 Wed 04-Sept-24 19:15:30

Grankle even 6 weeks post op I was still in a lot of pain so rang my GP who suggested a stronger pain relief. It worked and slowly my knee returned to normal.

We are all so different. A friend of mine had no problems going up and down stairs and had very little pain. I am thankful I only have 2 knees.

Read, rest, elevate and enjoy the peace!

Grankle Wed 04-Sept-24 18:03:31

Thank you for reassuring comments xx

grankle after my hip replacement operation both my legs were very swollen and it took ages for them to get back to normal. I mentioned it at check ups but was told it wasn’t anything to worry about. I’m sure your leg will soon be back to it’s usual size.

SusieB50 Wed 04-Sept-24 16:04:51

crankle it is tough managing on your own and just day to day living exhausted me ! It’s very early days and you will get better in leaps and bounds.
I think we all think we can jump up and get back to our old ways immediately - we have been waiting so long to have the op and are desperate to get going again.
I was very tired for at least a month and found that the best thing was to do short bursts and then sit down and have a cuppa. I did do the exercises but never really got the hang of the elastic band things . I also caught an awful virus about 3 months after my op (not Covid) which left me breathless and even more exhausted. I then asked my GP for an exercise on prescription course at our local gym where I was guided and supported to use the equipment. It was great and helped me to get my muscle strength back.We also have a weekly local gentle swimming and exercise group that I still use.

Hello all.
It's lovely to hear about your holidays. Italy and Cornwall, two of my favourite places.
I'm trying to do as much for myself as I can, but my goodness it's a struggle. I'm now ten days post op and still in pain and tired. My leg is now bruised and slightly swollen. It's not firm or hot so I am ruling out a dvt. I use my last injection tonight and start the aspirin tomorrow.
Am I expecting too much of myself?
Thank you for putting up with me being a moaning Minnie. X

Saving the planet one shower at a time!

Charleygirl5 Mon 02-Sept-24 14:49:50

Aveline it saves metered water!!!!!

Aveline Mon 02-Sept-24 14:10:29

'Annual shower'? Oh dear!!

Charleygirl5 Sun 01-Sept-24 22:38:21

I know a couple who have started their holiday in Cornwall and mentioned the steep paths and uneven ground. One, who plays a lot of golf is fitter than the other. Luckily the weather has been kind to them when they wanted to explore.

My annual shower and an early night tonight I think.
