Today Sarah Ferguson has made it known that, during treatment for Breast Cancer, it has been found that she also has Malignant Melanoma. I'm very glad she has gone public with this news as Malignant Melanoma is a potential killer if not diagnosed and treated promptly. 20 years ago, my sister, a GP, noticed a mark on the back of my neck which she thought should be investigated - just in case. My GP said 'it might be a melanoma' and so did the dermatologist, who took a biopsy. Then there was no 'might be'. I was seen at the Christie hospital in Manchester and the growth excised on the spot. It was found to have been at a very early stage and I will always be grateful to my vigilant sister to whom I literally owe my life.
So...if the Duchess's frankness encourages anyone to go and have that suspicious 'mole' investigated, she will also have saved some lives.
