Good afternoon hulahoop, there are a few other avenues you could try. Ask your GP if they could refer to a physiotherapist, they might be able to give you exercises to strengthen the surrounding muscles. Failing that look for a private physio in your area.
Other options are Osteopaths or Chiropractors.
Ask around friends & neighbours they may have had success with these professionals. Good luck.

Thanks for reply I have seen physio unfortunately exercises didn't make any difference.

Would sleeping with a pillow between your knees help? Or Voltarol?

I am struggling with ‘hip bursitis’ and seeing a consultant next week. Physio and osteopath don’t think it is bursitis. Do you get pain when you press it?

Yes I do, I was diagnosed following a MRI since I came home, I have been thinking if acupuncture would do anything. What do your physio and osteopath think it is ?

TENS helped me enormously with bursitis pain. I would think acupuncture would be worth trying too. Good luck, it's so painful.

The physio thought it may be something to do with my lower back (muscular/tendons/ligaments) and the osteopath thought it might be piraformis syndrome. The dr now thinks it’s not bursitis. There’s no pain when it’s pressed. It’s pain on the outside of my thigh but it goes to my knee as well. Had it almost a year and it’s getting me down.

You should get a second opinion, because the NHS is clear: you can have more than one steroid injection (and my doctor told me second ones are usually more successful than the first). If three steroid injections fail, you should be offered aspiration (where the fluid is drained) and if that too fails, you can have the bursa removed.

I had this condition and the doctor pressed it and yes it hurt!! Had trouble getting in and out of the car , steps were very difficult - on the positive side my GP assured me it would get better .He offered me a steroid injection, physio or watch and want and take ibuprofen. I went for the watch and wait option. The down side was that because of the pain I put to much strain on my good leg (getting up from a loo during a holiday) and pulled a muscle that took me back to GP and it took months to heal !! So I had trouble with both legs! So do take care . The bursitis has now healed and my pulled muscle is improving now.
hulahoop , your bursitis will heal but can take a long time!! Good luck.

Smile I have had 3 injections 2in hip using ultra sound and one directly into bursa ,I asked about drainage and he said that wasn't possible ! I know I have read about it but he said it wouldn't help .
Shelf life glad yours is now sorted .

I have posted on other strings about the same thing Hulahoop. Mine was labelled greater trochanteric pain syndrome seemingly the new name for bursitis. Absolute agony. Have now had 3 injections with no joy and consultant reckons to try some kind of platelet rich injection. Physio was ok but never really improved much. I now have a Chiropractor who isn’t afraid to be hands on and that has made a difference though never going away. I swear by something called ChiroIce available online which certainly does bring relief though I have to take paracetomol each regularly now (can’t take much ibruprofen or naproxen as have a hiatus hernia). Mine was actually diagnosed by CT scan I had done privately as the pain was so debilitating and the GP was perplexed as to what it was.

What is TENS please? I’ve been stricken with this since Boxing Day. Had prev bout in the summer. Hurts when pressed, top of thigh. I can take Naproxen but supposed to do so ‘sparingly’. Find it very hard to move round the house. Was told acupuncture unlikely to help 🥺
No doubt this is a female only problem, due to structure of pelvis.

hulahoop Thu 25-Jan-24 13:07:38

Hi Winterwhite tend is a machine with pads to stick on where pain is ,it uses delicate pulses and is used to ease pain.

winterwhite Thu 25-Jan-24 14:37:49

Thanks, Hulahoop, will look into that. Your problem sounds much worse than mine, so good luck.

Was surprised to be told by physio today to try warmth (sitting with hot water bottle against hip). Everything else says ice.🥺

Some general advice:
Physical therapy (PT): A physical therapy specialist can design a personalised exercise programme for you to strengthen muscles, improve mobility and reduce pain.
Stretching: Stretching exercises can help improve flexibility. However, it is important to coordinate any exercises with your doctor to avoid injury.
Drug therapy: Your doctor may also consider prescribing anti-inflammatory drugs or other medications to relieve pain and inflammation.
Avoiding overload: Avoid prolonged static loading and avoid activities that can aggravate the joint.
Cold and heat: Applying an ice compress can help reduce inflammation, and heat treatments can help relax muscles.
However, all recommendations should be coordinated with your doctor or other qualified professional to avoid possible complications and to take into account the specifics of your condition. Get well)

Harrytone5 I have some personal exercises from physio. I can't take anti inflammatory drugs due to hiatus hernia so have brufen gel which doesn't have much effect ,I take controlled drug for another problem .I have a tens machine but nothing helps ,I am at a loss what else I can do ,the pain when walking is horrendous it starts 50to100yds .
