Bowel Cancer Screening Test positive

I had a routine test recently which came back positive. I’m quite an anxious person when it comes to health matters so I’m not coping at all well at the moment.

There is a family history of bowel cancer (my brother was diagnosed10 years ago and was successfully treated) and I’m in the higher risk group being 66 years old so this adds to the worry.

I’m feeling generally quite well but have IBS so it’s difficult to say whether I have other symptoms.

I have to have a colonoscopy and there’s usually a two week wait, but have been told they’re running behind so may be up to six weeks, so I’m considering booking in for a private test as I can’t cope with the waiting

I wondered if anyone had any positive experiences they can share with me that would ease my mind?

I’d be very, very grateful.

Be prepared, just in case.

I have to say, this bowel prep isn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

I expected something, err we’ll ‘livelier’ All very gentle up to now.

Good luck for tomorrow. I’ll be thinking of you 💐

The jug of doom is the worst bit in my opinion. Give me the Humming Machine anyday. I hold my nose and sort of pour it down my throat , trying not to taste it. Try and think of the good it's doing. Your bowels will be all pink and clean on the inside when your "session" in the bathroom , to put it politely , is over.
Best of luck for tomorrow

Thanks MissAdventure and LucyAnna 🥰

NanaK54 it’s so kind of you to remember 😊

I’ve just put the jug of doom into the fridge ready for the first dose at 7.00.

I must admit I’m starting to get properly anxious now.

nanaK54 Tue 20-Feb-24 16:12:24

I've known a good few people who claim Kalms get them through stressful times
Fingers crossed, they work.
I'm a terrible coward, so I'm petrified of any procedure, let alone the results.

It's a known thing, "scanxiety" but I'm not sure anyone has found the answer to making it less stressful.

Sillyoldbird Sun 18-Feb-24 17:12:55

MissAdventure, no I wasn't busy at all and have no idea why I’ve suddenly started to wobble. Maybe because the date is getting closer?

I’ve started to take Kalms so hoping these will help.

I didn’t think you were making light by the way 😊

MissAdventure Sun 18-Feb-24 17:08:07

Its good that your mind will contemplate the idea

Were you busier for the last couple of days than you are today?
I'm not making light of your worries, so I hope it doesnt come across that way.

Incidentally, my daughter always swore by rescue remedy, if she felt a bit panicky.

Sillyoldbird Sun 18-Feb-24 16:51:53

MisssAdventure I’ve thought of little else and I know that I would just get on with it like everyone else has to.

MissAdventure Sun 18-Feb-24 16:24:30

Ok, so why not consider how it would be if you got the very worst news?

What would you do?
Run screaming, or refuse to listen, or smash up the place?

Or, would you grit your teeth, take whatever is recommended, and get through it, a day, or an hour at a time?

Sillyoldbird Sun 18-Feb-24 15:31:10

Only posting this as it’s quite therapeutic to write things down. Replies very welcome but please don’t feel you have to.

Had a couple of better days since I last posted followed by a difficult one today. So I am trying really hard to keep in mind the hard facts: 91% of people referred for further investigation after a + result don’t have cancer. In addition, I know for a fact I have at least one of the many possible causes.

This would be enough for most people to feel significantly reassured, but isnt working for me just now. I feel very annoyed at myself.

👍

Sillyoldbird Wed 14-Feb-24 20:31:47

Callistemon21 I love that expression - my new mantra perhaps?

Not just for this but for other aspects of life

Sillyoldbird Wed 14-Feb-24 20:28:16

SuperTinny you’re absolutely right of course. My daughter is a health professional (ODP) and her philosophy is more akin to yours.

Though I didn’t work in a health setting, I supported people in the most tragic social circumstances which certainly helped me to see how fortunate I am myself.

The problem for me is that, despite knowing this, and despite past counselling, self-help and occasionally medication, I still really struggle to get things into perspective when it comes to health concerns. At times, I literally don’t know how to stop the worries from overwhelming me, though I do try my hardest.

That said, after the initial panic, I am now starting to get a grip so perhaps I’m not a lost cause?

I don’t get worried about the same things as you by the looks of it as I’d probably take a pair of shears to the hedge myself!
