Hi, does anyone have experience of a pulmonary embolism. My adult daughter, early 30's just returned from a long trip from Asia, unfortunately on Tuesday she was rushed into hospital for a PE, she is back at her home now.
Any advice as to how best to manage this diagnosis would be much appreciated.

She should have been prescribed anti clotting drugs.

When I was in hospital both times, after a heart attack, there was an elderly lady who had just returned from Australia with a pain in her leg, which she ignored and a fit young Italian woman, who collapsed at Glasgow airport. Both had pulmonary embolisms. They were treated with anti coagulant drugs.
The young lady was told she must travel home by train and could not fly. She was also told she had to stop taking oral contraceptives, because that was the cause of her embolism.

Hopefully your daughter's clinicians will have identified the cause of it.

Sadly it happens, as a young healthy person she was a low risk, hope she will be OK soon.
On long haul you can take low dose Aspirin (half normal tablet before you go) just try and move around on the Plane and keep hydrated.
Thousand of people do this long flight everyday, it not common thanks goodness.
Hope she will be better soon.

Surely she will have been medicated and advised at the hospital??

She needs to be advised by her medical team

Yes...she does have medication and will be going back to hospital on Monday to find out more....I just wondered how common it was...so thought I'd ask on here.

I was found to have several pulmonary emboli when I was in my mid sixties. Had to have blood thinning medication for 6 months but have had no problems since and that was 10 or 12 years ago. I don’t think yo need worry about your daughter.

I had a pulmonary embolism a year ago last September.I was alone in the house at the time.I am a retired nurse and recognised the symptoms.I managed to ring for a taxi to take me to hospital which fortunatly came very quickly and got me to hospital in 10 minutes. Was found to have a large clot in my right lung which was spreading into my left one.If I had waited for an ambulance it would have been too late.
I am now on anti coagulant tablets for the rest of my life.
One of my sisters was not so lucky, a few years ago she literally dropped dead in her house of a PE. My son's ex- mother- in -law was found dead in her house of a PE.
Very frightening.

My son had a pulmonary embolism, after a DVT in one leg, at the age of 20. He'd never smoked, hadn't ever been abroad then, and was fit, slim and healthy. He was admitted to hospital (5 days), given Heparin injections, but nothing when he left hospital. Perfectly fine ever since, and he's now 42

I had a PE while on chemotherapy and had to curtail the treatment. I was on Apixiban for six months. No further treatment since then.

What a fright for you all!
Having returned from a month in NZ, aged 75, I was very well behaved on the 24hr flights, drinking plenty of water necessitating many trips to the loo and trips between. I wore flight socks.

What I did notice though were lots of young people who slept the entire journey not moving about at all. They must have taken sleeping pills.

But hey, if all 325 passengers had walked about, there would have been chaos!!
