My mother lost her 12 year old sister to appendicitis in the 1930s. All 9 siblings had 2 weeks of being very unwell together with what was diagnosed as influenza. They were living in a tiny farmhouse in rural ireland . After 2 weeks 8 of the 9 children recovered but the 12 year was still very unwell with a high temperature.
My grandfather cycled 15 miles to the doctor’s house to ask him to visit. He diagnosed appendicitis and sent for an ambulance. She was taken to the nearest hospital 30 miles away and her appendix abscess ruptured as the ambulance arrived at the hospital. She didn’t survive.
my adult son almost suffered the same fate. Went to GP with severe stomach pains. He had not seen a GP for 18 years so it should have been obvious he was for real. Sent him home to bed with paracetamol. Around midnight we called for ambulance who recognised straight away it was his appendix. Unfortunately it burst before he got to theatre and the surgeon said he did his best to get it all out but it went everywhere.
Fast forward a month and he was very ill indeed and back for more surgery to clean it all out.
To this day I blame the GP as appendicitis is the most obvious thing in a fit and healthy young man.
