I worry when I see all this vaping especially youngsters. I hope I am wrong but wouldn't be surprised if this will be the next big health scare.

I'm sure "they" are going to ban the vapes that are marketed to appeal to teens.

The fruity, flavourful ones that look as if they generate enough steam to run a train.

He's a late starter!

My BF’s ex DH only took up smoking at 53!!! We just couldn’t believe it from an apparently sensible chap.
He’s 73 now and gives up periodically, but always goes back, saying he enjoys smoking. He smokes so deeply - a cigarette is gone in 3 puffs/draws??
We reckon he’s spending £100 a week on cigarettes, but it’s his money and he can afford it.

There’s no cure for stupid!

I have up smoking but vape instead.
Not ideal, but it's a long, drawn out process to wean myself off vaping.

I gave up 19 years ago. Used patches and inhalator and it was very hard but I did it!

I believe the combination of drinking and smoking needs to be looked at. Our ex neighbour did both heavily and died at 62 from lung cancer. His death was horrible it was a hot summer and everyone had their windows wide open and you could hear him coughing for hours. He ended up on oxygen with a stairlift as he could not get upstairs.

My Dad died of cancer of the oesophagus but never smoked in his life. My friend is currently undergoing treatment for lung cancer but never smoked either.

Me too I got diagnosed with Lung Cancer last year and never ever smoked in my life and never really been in smokey environments. I was told by my Oncologist it was just bad luck but more and more people are getting LC having never smoked. So if you are continually tired, off your food, breathless and generally feeling that you have slowed get yourself checked out.

Well done for giving up. My husband died 6 weeks ago from cancer of the oesophagus. He smoked from the age of 16 and would never give up smoking his pipe. It was a horrible death. My daughter gave up in her 20's and it took three attempts as she found it so difficult. People make their own choices.

I stopped when 54, twelve years ago. Once my mind was made up, I found it easier than imagined. Only because it was a decision, not another 'attempt'.

His struggle to breath was hard to witness, oxygen cylinder beside him most of the time. My childhood memory is of waking in the morning listening to him coughing.

Well done you !! I have never smoked, but understand how difficult it must be to stop. I grew up with a father who was a heavy smoker, he died as a result of this although it was not cancer. He always said to me " never light up" During my working life everyone smoked and at times I was under pressure to accept their offers of a cigarette - I never did!
You have done amazingly well and your health will continue to improve.
Please don't slip back into the habit, you have worked so hard to get to this point - don't waste all the determination and effort. Congratulations on your success.

My DH stopped when he got Legionnaires 9 years ago and it changed not only his life but mine too.

I hope you do stop smoking as this is what killed my husband. Every smoker should be taken to a hospital High Dependency Unit and see all the patients struggling to breathe through their oxygen masks. My husband always said it was like breathing through a straw.

I did have to go into hospital 5 years ago when I developed chest pains that had been aggrivated by smoking. It was only an overnight thing, but had I kept smoking, this could have come back. Also I feel a lot healthier and cleaner since I stopped.

Has anyone successfully stopped smoking in their 50s? I was never a heavy smoker, usually 10 a day, but decided to stop when the lockdown started. It was hard at first, but after two months, I beat my cravings and have managed to stay off the cigatettes for over 4 years. I never suffer as much from colds, shortness of breath as I used to and probably save £50 a week.
