What the heck do I do?

I have atrial fibrillation and newly diagnosed coronary artery disease.

I have had chest pain all afternoon and just gone into AF - not fast as I am on a drug to keep the rate down and have taken an extra pill.

I don't feel great - in pain and slightly giddy. But I am wandering about OK, not clutching my chest and falling to the floor.

If I ring 111, they will send me in and the waiting time at present is 4.5 hours with 50 people waiting in A&E. To be honest I simply do not feel well enough to cope with that.

I have faced this dilemma several times - more often in the middle of the night. I simply have no concept of what might or might not be safe to do on any one occasion. So far I have recovered from it after between 6 to 12 hours.

What would you do?

I hope you are ok Lucky and that you either called 999 or 111 and got yourself to hospital. I got DH there both times he had symptoms.

Luckygirl3 Hope your okay flowers

I too have AF and I’m on digoxin it’s great for slowing down the heart but if I was in severe pain I’d go straight to A & E please don’t hesitate even if you don’t feel well. On second thoughts it might be best to dial 999 the paramedics will fast track you into hospital. Take care, xxxxxx

Morning Lucky, how are you today?

Aveline Sun 02-Jun-24 06:27:09

Hoping to hear how you got on last night and that you got help and feel better today.

Joseann Sun 02-Jun-24 06:10:08

I hope you are being looked after and that the pain has gone.

Hopefully you are on your way to hospital right now.....

I recently woke in the early hours of the morning with a very rapid erratic heart rate. It didn't settle in 30 minutes so my partner took me to A&E. I was triaged, had an ecg and found a bed in less the than 30 minutes despite it being busy. Hopefully you are now in hospital, if not, you need to get there asap. I spent two nights in hospital but the treatment was amazing and I'm very grateful. Tbh I'm not sure I'd be here if I had ignored what was happening. Good luck, I hope it's easily sorted.

Lucky you need this like a hole in the head but I have been around long enough to know part of your background. I would dial 999 and you will be taken care of but it sounds to me as though you need the comfort of a hospital bed.

As others have said as a "heart" patient you will be fast tracked.

As a long standing and valued member of GN and the wife of a former GP, you do not need us to say get to A&E.
Get one of your D’s on board and get help.
It is possible on Saturday evening we are mostly occupied with family etc.
You could have had no replies at all.
Be sensible, don’t mess about with your health.
Get going now.
I wish you all the best and hope to hear soon that you are receiving suitable treatment for your condition.

Elegran Sat 01-Jun-24 21:07:17

I think you know what you must do, Luckygirl3. You probably already knew before you posted, but after reading these replies - 100% say ring 111 or go to A&E - you won't be in any doubt. You will be fast-tracked as soon as they hear your story.

Marydoll Sat 01-Jun-24 20:41:37

Anytime I have been sent to A&E with chest pain, I have been fast tracked. No waiting.
It turned out on two occasions I had had a heart attack, not the usual symptons. The third time, 111 sent me and it was discovered taht despite not having a heart attack, my heart was under stress.

Please phone 111, they will book you into A&E and you will bypass all the admin stuff.

I get that Luckygirl, I have the same. and had what you are suffering many many times. Remember, this WILL NOT kill you!!
If you’re unsure and scared, don’t forget you can always call an ambulance. I’m not saying exaggerate your symptoms but don’t play it down either.
If you call an ambulance, they are very thorough, ECG, blood pressure everything. If they think it’s dodgy, they take you in, if it’s ‘just’every day AF, they’ll leave you at home. Even that comforted me, knowing i was medically stable even though i didn’t feel it!!
Best of luck, and don’t hesitate to message me if you need more chat/ support.

I hope you’re on the way to A&E now lucky. If there’s no one to take you I think an ambulance would be deemed appropriate. I was advised - no instructed - to call an ambulance should Mr C have a recurrence of a serious AF episode. Cardiac issues are definitely prioritised.

merlotgran Sat 01-Jun-24 20:10:13

Please go to A&E, luckygirl. They will prioritise a heart condition.

Go to A and E right now, get someone to take you there if possible.
I was in similar situation nearly two years ago, alone in the house and suddenly got short of breath and right sided chest pain going through to my back raised heart rate.I am a retired nurse and knew this was dangerous, I rang for a taxi did not bother risking a wait for ambulance.Taxi got me to nearest hospital in 10 minutes.
I still had to fight my case in A and E and demanded to see doctor when my symptoms returned after 15 minutes.Turned out I had a pulmonary embolism,(blood clot on the lung). I was very very lucky in getting myself to hospital on time, it turned out the clot was a very large one and was spreading to the other lung. A PE is one of the largest causes of sudden death, one of my sisters died very suddenly of this a few years ago.Had four days in hospital and am now on blood thinning tablets for the rest of my life.
Do not waste time posting on here, get to hospital now.

BlueBelle Sat 01-Jun-24 20:01:22

When my BP shot up unexpectedly (no previous problem ) I got on two buses (my daughter told me off hugely when she knew, but she was at work ) and I took myself to Aand E
Because I was presenting with a possible cardiac problem I was immediately sent to a separate area away from the main queuing area all tests were fine and it’s never happen since

Please please get to Aand E Luckygirl

nanaK54 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:57:52

I'm so sorry that this is happening for you.
I really think you must go to A and E.
Good luck flowers

pascal30 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:57:20

For goodness sake ring 999 and get into hospital.. You will have priority if you have a heart condition.. It sounds very similar to how I felt when I had a heart attack..

Kate1949 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:57:06

Just to add, when we were there, people with chest pain and suspected strokes were prioritised.

Iam64 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:55:40

Go to A and E Lucky xx

Kate1949 Sat 01-Jun-24 19:53:50

I agree with the 111 option. When I rang them last week for my very poorly husband, they assessed the situation, said they would send an ambulance but if we could get him there quicker we should take him so we did. There were about 100 people in A&E but they checked DH within an hour although there was then an 8 hour wait to see a doctor. Yes it was awful but he was admitted, treated and is now at home recovering albeit very slowly. Good luck.

Romola Sat 01-Jun-24 19:50:21

Exactly right RosiesMaw.
Ring a trusted friend or neighbour and ask them to take you to A and E.
Don't wait.
Best of luck.

fancythat Sat 01-Jun-24 19:49:50

I really have no idea about that.

But what I have done about something else entirely, is fill out the GP online form quite precisely.

Mine then can say, as it did once, "the GP advises you to ring 111 or 999. And we wont be resposible for your health if you do not do this". Something like that.

Hope this helps. It may be the wrong advice.
But didnt want for you not to get replies.

crazyH Sat 01-Jun-24 19:49:31

Don’t waste time on here - call 911
