Pedometers

I recently downloaded a pedometer app to my smart 'phone. It was fine recording my daily walks of two miles along the beach front and back for a week. However, suddenly yesterday it recorded three miles instead of two for the same distance. I was helping out at a charity event at our parish church during the morning and had my bag on the floor behind a screen where there was a lot of footfall on the granite slabs. I wonder if a mechanism in the app. was so sensitive, it actually picked up other peoples movements? Any ideas, please?

You could be right Tuaim. I have very recently got a Fitbit and realised from the start that the steps it's recording are more than I'm walking. I assume that as it's a watch, it registers arm movements. I must stop gesticulating smile

My smart watch works out how many steps you have done by recording the arm swings. It is very interesting to see the prodigious number of miles I clock up after I have been conducting my choir! smile

On most apps you can adjust the sensitivity.

The first thing I tried after buying a smart watch was the pedometer. I found that by swinging my arms it made it look as if I was walking.

Our son wanted to see who walked the furthest during the day, he did 11,000 steps and I did 20,000 steps, all by walking around the house and sitting in the chair moving my wrist. He could not believe it. I no longer bother with it. I do not walk unless I am going somewhere whether in the house or outside.

None of the apps are completely accurate. I don't use them anymore because I became a slave to them.

If you have a rough idea of how many steps you've walked why would a few more or less really matter?

Spend a bit of time with your Fitbit to make sure the settings are right. Mine is on my dominant hand(arm). That works well.
Only body worn measures can measure steps as mobiles aren't always with you.
