Silent reflux just diagnosed

I had been suffering with a strong urge to clear my throat because my throat felt "full", voice going hoarse if I used it more than usual and the occasional feeling of acid reflux during the night which I thought was from the stomach. This had gone on for at least two years.

Is anyone else suffering from this and if so, what worked well for you? I've been advised to raise the end of the bed, take Gaviscon Advance twice daily and make various adjustments -g to avoid many foods that I enjoy. I don't eat these foods very often (apart from tomatoes) so that could prove difficult.

My nose is always blocked too, but that may be a separate problem.

Silent reflux is from the stomach. Raising the bed is a recommended strategy. I hope the treatment works for you. I have it from time to time but after being sent for a gastroscopy a few years ago I am reluctant to consult a doctor about it now. There is still some sceptisism about whether it exists or how to treat it.

I've got it too. I take Omeprazole every day now - have for several years and don't have any symptoms. It started with the roof of my mouth being painful at the back and I was checked out for cancer, which was dismissed. After cutting out lots of things (spicy food, alcohol, caffeine etc) I was diagnosed with silent reflux and used to take Gaviscon. I can now eat and drink anything I want without a problem.

Have you seen your GP? I think it is advisable if not.

Reflux 'juices' can drip down your trachea (windpipe) and cause further problems. Medication to reduce stomach juices, such as Omeprazole will be of help, but should be prescribed.

I hope this doesn’t sound crazy but I was suffering from acid reflux but it has now gone away since a 20 cm ovarian cyst was removed…..

Dairy foods eg milk, cheese, eggs, can cause a lot of mucus in the body for some people, so something to consider….
Also, as you mention, acid forming foods ( you can check this online and it does include tomatoes) can increase heartburn/reflux. Otherwise, raising yourself a little in bed, will help and some people find sleeping on the left side is better. Eating large meals, and especially relatively close to sleeping will aggravate digestive stuff and so will stress. Personally, I wouldn’t take any meds for it but I find if I have a spell of poor digestion, some of the above works for me. Hope this helps.

I won’t take the meds except if it becomes troublesome and for just a short time, having learned what brings it on,

As you say you’ve been diagnosed I assume you’ve seen a GP who advised you.
I have a hiatus hernia causing reflux and take Famotidine daily, I can’t take Omeprazole, Gaviscon advance, on prescription, at bedtime.
Reflux can cause nasal drip which may contribute to your blocked nose.

I have had this for years. I take 1 low dose of lansoprazole first thing and I can eat anything. If I miss it I suffer.
