Broken ankle advice

It’s a horrible injury I fell off the Hitchens step. I could not manage crutches at the Time, being overweight then. I eventually bought a cheap wheelchair, my Dah was cast unwillingly at first as my carer but then got into the role! It took a while to heal and the orthopods wanted to operate several times but I refused. I was in a cast for some months, then a boot, but it remained quite swollen and bruised. But time heals all wounds and after a couple of months, with the aid of physio the ankle healed. I was around 45 at the time. Physio was a great help. Touch wood I never got arthritis in the ankle despite being told it was inevitable, though have arthritis in other places. Now 69. Hang in there!

Takes a while to settle, mine was fractured and dislocated. I was diligent with physio and kept a support bandage on for ages after. That was entirely my choice.
The main thing was everything I could do physio wise I did do. It has definitely paid off I now have a great range of movement in the joint although there is no doubt it is a weather predictor!
I also recall the frustration of wanting it to be perfect thinking I would be limping forever. Which of course I’m not.

It does take a while for the swelling to go down. I broke my right ankle in a silly accident about 6 years ago, first a plaster to the knee for 6 weeks, then a boot which I wore during the day. After the plaster came off it was debatable whether the bones would then need pinning but the surgeon decided it was all right.

Can you ask the orthopaedic department if a support stocking might help with swelling or if is it not recommended?

Sleep with a pillow under your leg.

I would try sleeping in the boot one night, it will keep the lower leg and foot stable, if it eases the discomfort it’s worth it.

Thanks. I suppose I'm a bit impatient really, I'm still using the boot when I go out and doing the exercises, but it's so difficult to sleep as it seems more swollen and uncomfortable in bed

I had a full leg plaster for 6 weeks ! Thank goodness things have moved on since then

I broke my ankle & bones in my foot 6 years ago.
I was in a boot for 8 weeks continuously (apart from bed) and then for another four weeks when I was out and about.

I started physio at 8 weeks which was very helpful (aqua and anti-gravity treadmill, building up to strengthening exercises). I had little after 8-10 weeks back in normal shoes after 12.

6 weeks ago I slipped on uneven ground walking my dog, and fractured my ankle (Weber B type) and had a comminuted fracture of the big toe. First given crutches which I couldn't use due to sciatica, and then a boot for 6 weeks. I can walk reasonably ok but foot and especially toe are still VERY swollen and uncomfortable especially in bed. I've an appointment with Fracture Clinic in 3 weeks for re xray etc. Can anyone tell me how long the swelling lasts? Can't wear a normal shoe - even a trainer right now. I'm a fit 75 year old, apart from this!!
