Brushing before or after breakfast

Tenko

The official advice advice is to brush before breakfast . But as a hygienist I’m just happy that my patients are brushing!!! You’d be surprised how many don’t 🤮.

NHS England advice is to brush before going to bed and “at one other time during the day”. You’ll never convince me to brush before breakfast and as for not rinsing, that’s equally daft. As I’m in my 60s with very healthy and clean teeth, regularly complimented by my dentist, I see no reason to change 😁

Before breakfast and at bedtime, as recommended by dentists. Extra brush before going out or meeting anyone, for freshness.

I was finally convinced, a few years back, not to wash my mouth out after brushing.
I brush after brekkie, to get rid of brekkie debris, Each time I use loo during night (two or three times usually), I rinse out my mouth, so probably not much acid build up.
In the evening, I clean my teeth when I get undressed (around 7 ish), only have water after that. If I leave my teeth until I go to bed, then I am tempted to 'snack' during those hours. Being lazy, once I have cleaned my teeth, do not wish to do so again, so know I cannot eat anything more. Has helped my weight reducing diet no end!!!!!

Before breakfast and last thing at night, interdental brushes after every meal and like Whiff I dont rinse mouth out after brushing.

Bacteria form in your mouth overnight argymargy hence ‘morning breath’.
I brush before breakfast and last thing at night, use interdental brushes after every meal.

If you have brushed last thing at night, how on earth have your teeth got dirty during sleep? Do you have midnight snacks? Unless you brush again after breakfast you are spending the entire day with food remnants on your teeth.

I like to brush after breakfast but my dentist says it's better before - for the acid reasons someone mentioned above.
Often I brush again an hour or so after breakfast if I'm at home.

We’ve heard about you and your dentist KittyLester 😀

Sometimes a quick clean before breakfast and always after when I do the full 2 minutes. Also a lot of poking about with a dental stick.

I always brush before breakfast even though I drink water in the night when I need the loo like the feeling of a fresh teeth and brush last thing at night.

Read on one of the threads some time about not rinsing out your mouth after brushing as it's better to leave the toothpaste on your teeth for it to do it's work so haven't rinsed since . My mouth does feel fresher even after breakfast . No idea if it does you teeth any good but it's become a habit now.

First thing I do every morning is clean my teeth. Then last thing at nigh. Always have since a child.

I don't like having morning breath so I tend to swish and rinse first thing and then brush and floss after breakfast .
I often have ginger marmalade on toast which is sticky , but on my pre Christmas diet I'm having eggs .

I brush before because my mouth feels gunky in the morning so I wouldn’t fancy eating without cleaning my teeth.
Otherwise I brush after every meal.

I brush after breakfast. I eat muesli and granola and fruits, so there is a lot of debris to get rid of.

I brush after breakfast but the dentist I sleep with brushes before.

Not odd, Cossy. I do that too. I like to get rid of the early morning fuzzy feeling in my mouth (must be because I snore!)

I don’t eat breakfast but toothpaste makes my morning coffee taste odd. So I use that in my ‘just before going out’ clean.

My dentist advised leaving half an hour between eating breakfast, especially if drinking orange juice, and cleaning teeth to give the enamel time to stabilise after contact with acids.

Cossy Fri 04-Oct-24 19:29:58

This sounds odd but I brush before, without any toothpaste, then after my morning cuppa, with toothpaste. Again once last thing at night with toothpaste.

Sometimes, if I’ve had garlic or curry for lunch I’ll brush my teeth then too.

Before, we’re advised morning and night, if we brushed every time we ate some people would be brushing four or five times a day, particularly children.
I have at least two friends who eat breakfast, then biscuits mid morning, lunch, dinner and supper

I always clean my teeth first . I never eat breakfast but I do sometimes have a cup of tea before brushing on the days I have the luxury of taking tea back to bed with me before I need to shower and dress

I’ve read that it’s better to brush your teeth before breakfast as it protects your teeth but our friend disagrees. Thoughts/what do you do?
