I have been encouraged at least three times in the NHS to put in complaints, when I gave simple feedback, because a complaint triggers an investigation to see what needs to be done (if anything) to put things right. In each case they told me that they had made changes, at least one of which could be life saving. So long as we want real appropriate change it is always worth complaining (though not sending an angry tirade of course....)

Well done you! And well done to the health authority for their response and for notifying you of their actions.
Hope you're in good health now.

Well done, Luckygirl! That's a real case of every cloud having a silver lining.

Well done Luckygirl, I hope you are feeling reasonably well at the moment.

The last time I was sent to hospital by NHS 24, with breathing difficulties, I saw such a difference in response from my previous heart attacks.
I couldn't fault my previous treatment, but this was so much more efficient.

This time I was informed that they were trialling a new system for the first time that day and I was taken to a designated area, where within an hour I had an ECG, echogram, bloods and and a chest x-ray done. My designated doctor kept popping in with updates. I was amazed by the efficiency and speed of it.

It seems that this initiative was being trialled in the Glasgow University Trust hospitals.

Isn’t it great when something good comes out of a bad experience? Well done, Luckygirl, your near disaster could prove a life saver.

Thanks for kind thoughts.

I must admit I did not expect to get such a positive and constructive response, so it has been very heartening.

Excellent work Luckygirl. Sounds like your rotten experiences have led to very positive changes for the benefit of future patients. Meanwhile, I hope you are feeling better and more able to get on with life.

That is so so lovely to read Luckygirl13, the end bit I mean!

Not sure which health board you’re referring to but here in north Wales the wait in A&E for my dad with similar symptoms was 13 hours on Friday although he was thoroughly checked and tested with no further treatment necessary.

We still have a long way to go before things are anywhere near acceptable in the way our Betsi Cadwaladr health board is run - acknowledgment of shortcomings is a good first step.

Well done Welsh health board!

Thank you for your constructive comments Luckygirl and thank you NHS Wales for taking action.

Good for you luckygirl. In a much less serious situation I did the same about appalling treatment during an MRI. The same thing happened, fulsome apologies, an acknowledgement of errors, changes to procedures and a request to use my experience in training sessions. If patients don’t give feedback how will anything change?

I do remember your posts and worried for you. Hope things are very much better now.

Well done Luckygirl, you might save someone's life.

Many people are just so relieved to be home and don't put in a complaint. I know we should have done that after the treatment DH received in hospital three years ago; luckily other dedicated staff took over his care after DD complained and he recovered but it was a long haul.

That’s great, Lucky. You bothered and they actually responded in the correct (and a positive) way.
Undoubtedly your action will benefit other patients, well done!
Just ensure you take the best care of yourself now, please, onward and upward! 💐

Some people mighty remember that when I was on holiday in Wales in June I had an episode with my heart - AF and bad chest pain. I rang for help and finished up in A&E for about 14 hours. After various tests, ECGs etc, they sent me off home - I had to get as taxi to my holiday accommodation. They said that I had oesophageal spasm, in spite of me having explained to them that a recent exercise test had demonstrated ischaemic heart disease. And I had raised heart enzymes on the blood tests.

A few weeks later I was in hospital here at home with a blocked coronary artery that needed treating with a stent.

I got in touch with the Welsh health board and said that I did not wish to make a complaint but felt that there had been some significant errors in my treatment that could be a problem for others. In fact I had to formulate it as a complaint as there is no other way of doing this.

I have just received a very long letter outlining the admitted errors with several apologies, but most importantly letting me know what they had done about it. The protocols for people presenting with chest pain have been reviewed and updated and training has taken place for all staff, using my case as an example.

I am really quite impressed by this and hope that someone else's life might be saved.
