I will see the doctor if I can next week.

The affected area is on my left side, best described as where I put my knuckles where the side of my bra sits. The needle sharp pins and needles episodes only lasts about 5 seconds but it really hurts. It doesn’t happen every day and isn’t affected by breathing in or out. I have health anxiety at the best of times so this is worrying me. I’m hoping it’s just a trapped nerve or something.

Any thoughts on it? Have any of you ever experienced similar?
I will go to the doctor. And I will share with you next week what I’m told but in the meantime I thought I’d ask on her!

Blimey FGT2! At least you’re being dealt with efficiently. I hope it doesn’t interfere with your Spanish plans.🌹

Home just now.
Saw GP she wasn’t sure what it might be. A trainee. Went to check. Said her differential diagnosis could be pneumothorax. Advised a chest X-ray at the walk in as if anything untoward can’t fly.

Walked to the hospital. Got there 5pm. Had bloods, ECG (normal) and a chest X-ray. Waited till 8:30pm (I was last one in the waiting room by then).

Doctor called me through. Upshot is I MIGHT have a blood clot on my lung so I’ve got to go to Wythenshawe hospital tomorrow for a scan. I’ve been given a script for blood thinners. Go for that at 8am in the.morning.

I’m super anxious now. Tea and toast. Will update you all tomorrow. x

Cupidinours ‘cattle prod’ for this zinger of a pain is a brilliant description! I shall use it when I see the doctor and yes, it does make me yelp.

Just to let you all know I’ve got a GP appointment at 4pm today! Lucky me. I rang this morning for one. I’ll report back later and let you know how I get on.

The pain is intermittent. I’ve not had an episode since Saturday night. All told I’ve probably had one a week for the last month or so. I can’t see it being shingles.

While I’m there I might ask for the jab (probably have to make a separate appointment with the nurse). Thanks to everybody for your input, much appreciated. 😊

Hope you get a quick appointment FGT2. Time to take care of yourself now that Himself has had his scan. DH was always very concerned about my health, as he knew he needed me to support him under similar circumstances. (IYKWIM)

My immediate thought was shingles.
I know exactly the pain you mean and mine turned out to be shingles
Go to dr. He’ll prescribe for you.
And get well soon 🙏xxx

Yes RosiesMaw2 - I had it years ago - I thought I was having a heart attack. Actually, I had it twice, a couple of years apart. I didn’t go to the GP, because the pain was short lived. I googled and realised it was costochondritis. I’m not saying the OP has the same. I wonder if she has given us an update .

Hi, I also get this, noticed it a few times, it’s like a quick ‘cattle prod’, lasts about a second, it makes you almost yelp out, I did look it up and I found something called , ‘inter costal ??’ Not sure now. It’s exactly where you said, just under where the bra ends on left hand side, I’m glad someone else has it!! I’d be interested to know what the doc says.

Likewise.
I remember having this as a student 50+ years ago.
It’s called Costochondritis which most commonly affects the upper ribs on the left-hand side of your body. Pain is often worst where the rib cartilage attaches to the breastbone (sternum), but it can also occur where the cartilage attaches to the rib.

I get sharp pains at the side of my left breast, and breast pain in general (mastalgia). I've been taking evening primrose oil for the breast pain but it doesn't really help with the sharp short bursts of pain I get on the side....

4allweknow You had shingles twice? Please don't tell me I could have a repeat of the awful pain I had earlier this year! I was distraught, the pain was so bad. Unfortunately it's left me with neuralgia.

friedgreentomatoes2 I do hope it's not, but it does sound like shingles. I spent 5 days in hospital but that's unusual I think. I do have some tips if it turns out the be that, so get back to me if you wish.

The day the pain started I'd been for a new bra and my daughter was convinced it was the movements the fitter had me doing trying on the different bras. The agonising pain started that night. I was 12th in the queue when I called the practice, so went to the walk-in centre and they gave me a prescription for the anti-viral. The Dr there said if there was a rash he'd say it was shingles. My daughter informed him she was pretty sure it was a pulled muscle from the bra fitting. I don't know how he kept a straight face. The next morning the rash appeared.

Definitely sounds like shingles to me, comes on if you have been a little run down ?

BrandyGran Mon 28-Oct-24 19:09:48

If you never had chickenpox as a child you will never get shingles. That might rule out shingles. I know this as was told by GP when I went for my flu plus shingles jabs a few years ago.

I wonder if it might be indigestion. Sounds mad I know, but a couple of my friends have recently taken themselves to A&E for suspected heart attacks only to find it was severe indigestion. Perhaps have some strong Gaviscone to hand next time and see whether that helps. You could also have pulled a muscle or it could be the after effect of lying wrongly on your side/back when you are sleeping. All sorts of possibilities, so see your GP ASAP to alleviate all that worrying about it. Fingers crossed you will be fine.

24Grannynannywanny Yes shingles is painful, had it twice. You do not always develop a rash though. In January this year had excruciating pain in my neck, side of face. Thought I had trapped nerve. Had to see GP as nothing controlled pain. When he declared Shingles I told him I'd already had it and been vaccinated, no rash, so how can it be shingles. Yes, you don't always get a rash, but its shingles. Here's prescription for pain.

sazz1 Mon 28-Oct-24 14:56:49

I had a line of tiny blister type spots on my face starting v near my eye and underneath it for a week before seeing Dr.
GP diagnosed shingles but it wasn't painful. Sent me to the Eye hospital and after eye tests gave me anti virals
Never had pain with it though

JdotJ Mon 28-Oct-24 14:50:12

It does sound like Shingles - a health care professional is best consulted but 2 years ago I experienced similar pains, (still do, off & on).
Saw GP who, because I mentioned associated breast pain, referred me straight away via the 2 week wait (2ww) cancer pathway to be seen.

It turned out I have Costachondritis - it's inflammation of the cartilage that surrounds the rib cage where it joints the breast bone. It does affect my breathing slightly, I see your breathing isn't affected but might be worth mentioning at an appt.

My daughter had shingles 3 yèars ago and said the pain was like being stabbed with a sharp knife. I thought she was exagerating until I had shingles 2 years ago. Sharp sharp pains and finally a rash. She was going through a very stressful time. I had just finished chemotherapy with a run down immune system. You have had a period of stress. So it could well be shingles.

Try and see your GP asap. Probably now too late for antivirals. They have to be taken within 72 hours of diagnosis.
If shingles, you will have to postpone your shingles jabs for a while. Can't remember for how long. You can have internal shingles with no rash. But take things gently and if you are tired...rest.

DanniRae Mon 28-Oct-24 13:48:18

It could be a kidney problem?

Whitbyfan Mon 28-Oct-24 12:56:13

Hi FGT I had shingles last year, couldn't get a GP appointment so rang 111 as I knew it was important to get the anti viral promptly. They rang the GP themselves and I got my prescription! However, I understand that pharmacists can now prescribe antivirals without seeing a GP. Hope you soon get sorted and feel better.

madalene Sun 27-Oct-24 23:54:01

It could be shingles, especially as it’s on one side. I had shingles and was puzzled like you are, because it was all on one side. On the other hand, it could be anxiety because you’ve had a difficult time lately and with the scan tomorrow too.
Good luck with it all, and try to see the doctor, preferably not a nurse or Physician Associate.

MissAdventure Sun 27-Oct-24 22:12:52

Especially when you have to set the alarm and wake up at the crack of dawn every day to try and make it it onto the queue to speak to a human!

Mt61 Sun 27-Oct-24 22:12:40

Sorry FGT- zappy type pains aren’t funny, I do know what you mean as I get the odd burning, stinging pain in the same place- I have an allergy to metal so thought it could be fastener on my bra but really it’s not in the right place.
I too thought it could be start of shingles but nothings popped up yet & it’s been six months.
Hope you get it sorted soon- there are types of antidepressants out there that also target nerve pain it really you don’t want to go down that route if you can help it.
