Hernia repair

Has anyone had a hernia repair? I'm due to have the procedure in January and wonder what to expect. I've heard it called a femoral hernia and also inguinal, and told to take care not to cause any strain before then, as it could be a problem. As time goes on I'm feeling more and more nervous about not lasting till January, but also wonder how long it takes to get over the procedure.

Any advice would be welcome.

I can’t help, but have been referred for inguinal hernia so I’ll follow this thread.
There is information online to an extent, but someone else’s experience is helpful.

My DH has had hernia repairs, separately, on each side. The last was a couple of years ago.

The procedure was done at a GP surgery that had a minor operations unit, by a visiting consultant.

Only took an hour or so, I drove him home as he was not allowed to drive for a couple of weeks.

Paracetamol for any pain relief, no dashing about for a little while, but was told to keep moving, which he did. Went for walks, gradually increasing in distance.

Soon back to normal.

My old boy had a double hernia (inguinal) just over 2 weeks ago. In fairness he is fit, well, pretty active and does a lot of walking. His recovery has been surprisingly easy with little pain, just discomfort really and easily relieved with painkillers for the first few days. He is driving again now but still has to take care about lifting anything heavy. I’ve no idea if his is a typical experience or not but I’ve been pretty amazed at how it’s gone. Hope this helps put you more at ease.

I think I may have an inguinal hernia. Symptoms are a bullge which appears in the groin on occasion. Quite tender to touch and bad pain. I lie down for a couple of hours and gradually pain eases. But episodes happen more often and lately feeling nauseous when it happens.

How did you get diagnosed and were Symptoms similar?

Mine is booked for the week after next. It’s an incisional hernia from when I had my appendix removed twenty years ago. It’s been causing me a lot of pain in the last few months so I’m keen to get it done.

I had an inguinal hernia repaired on the other side twelve years ago so I’m not worried about this one. This time it will be keyhole surgery and they’re hoping to send me home the same day although I’ve been told to take a bag in case they decide to keep me in as my blood pressure took a nosedive last time.

I live alone so DD will stay with me the first night and I can’t drive for two weeks. I was up and about really quickly last time. Just a bit sore. Obviously you have to be careful not to strain yourself for at least a month afterwards but recovery should be straightforward. Take care until January.

Family member had a local anaesthetic for inguinal hernia operation and was told not to drive for 2 weeks (till they could easily do an emergency stop). Was told to not lift anything for a couple of weeks and then to lift no more than 10 kg for 4 weeks and not to swim or run for 6 weeks. Walking was good.
They had an open (with mesh) repair.
No additional problems.
Different analgesia and different surgery means different recommendations I expect.

I was told today it is an inguinal hernia and will be sorted in January also !
