Macular hole

Has any one had surgery for a macular hole?
I’ve got to have it on the 27th December and I’m feeling very anxious about it and the recovery afterwards.
Any suggestions about the ‘posturing’ after the operation would be appreciated.
Thank you

Lizzie 59, I had a macular hole repair 18 months ago, after a brief chat with the surgeon I went into theatre, I was fully clothed and made to feel comfortable on the bed, my eye was anaesthetised which was a little uncomfortable but only took a minute or two, this was the worst part, after this the repair was painless lots of bright lights and buzzing of the laser, all over in 2.5 hours which included a cataract replacement.

The team explained everything as they went along, I was very nervous beforehand but would not be worried about it if I had to go through it again, after the surgery I had an eye cover to wear at night for 5 days. Preparation is key for the postering I had to keep my head down for 50mins out of every hour, I had put everything I needed, books, remote control, toiletries ect on a small table by my chair in the sitting room which I could reach without lifting my head, I had another stool in front of my chair with a pillow on and a clock on the floor.
I found it was quite uncomfortable on my neck to keep my head down but the pillow helped, I timed from the hour so at 10 to I would get up for a loo break eat something, eye drops and then back to posturing, A straw is very useful to drink from a cup when your head is down.

Overall I just told my self it was a week out of my life but it saved my sight, small price to pay, I had successful outcome although my sight is not the best. Good luck with the operation.

I ve got a macular hole I’ve known about it for the last two years not sure how long before I had it They are avoiding the operation as I ve had a lot of retina repairs so guess things are pretty weak there I have had my cateracts done, the first op the anesthetic didn’t work and I felt everything but the second one was a breeze My macular eye is not as good as it was straight after the cateract op so i could well need another op at some point

I’ve had the surgery in 2008. Afterwards I had to lie face down for quite a while , except when going to the bathroom. They regarded it as a matter of urgency and I was operated on within a couple of weeks. More often than not a cataract develops in the operated eye so I had to have that removed but that was a simple and painless procedure.

I shoul add that, although not perfect, y sight in that eye is reasonable. They put an ocular lens in. I am still able to drive.

Had surgery for this coming up for 4 years ago. The surgery is absolutely no problem so don't be nervous. The surgeon and I had a conversation aboutGin! The after op posturing is the hardest bit. I found the easiest way for me was to sit with legs up on a sofa and a pile of pillows and cushions high enough for me to rest my head on. I did take advantage of the 15 min allowed for quick shower/hair drying. I used the sofa day and night for the time specified. Ob iousky had to get up for toilet but kept my head bent over as much as possible. Don't know how folk managed when the "positioning" went on for 6 weeks. You can watch tv with head bent, listen to radio, read, I did some crocheting too. If on your own
use ready made meals, you'll survive. The time will whizz by, life is just a bit different for a few weeks.

I had macular hole surgery 2 years ago.
The absolute worst part was the anticipation and fear beforehand- but when it happened, under local anaesthetic , it was a doddle! I couldn't believe how worried I'd been beforehand. Posturing for 5 days afterwards wasn't a problem- it was just annoying but audio books and TV are your friend here. Get all your ducks in a row before the surgery as your sight will be poor for a few days. Good luck!

Some suggestions for this thread. If it can be afforded, take Macushield daily. The substances in it keep the eye healthy. Also, eat organic eggs. Non-organic farmers may add a food dye to the hens' feed to make the yolks yellow. Organic farmers feed the hens marigold heads, with the petals, because marigold heads contain the 3 substances used in Macushield.

Eye problems are awful aren't they? I've had retinal repair and new lens, but after 15 years of taking Macushield, my eyes are fully healthy. Research has shown its effectiveness.

Had the surgery about 10 yrs ago and it was more serious because I had left it too long. As with other posters the surgery was fine and the posturing quite doable with planning, bit of a rest actually. Vision okay, fine for driving, would have been better if I had gone for it sooner. One thing, when I was upright and starting to see I noticed lots of tiny black dots and panic set in. Was reassured that these would quickly disappear and they did. Not floaters just aftermath so don't worry if that happens to you.

Just wanted to wish you luck xx

I had a macular hole fixed in 2019 and I was also very worried about it beforehand. As somebody else said, the only uncomfortable bit is the injection and that's fast. Honestly, there is nothing else to worry about - nothing gory at all.

I don't know what the 'posturing' or 'positioning ' is but I also had a new lens in case of a future cataract. It really is nothing to worry about. I was just given a dressing to wear over my eye for 7 days and had to rest more than usual. Now I've got much better sight in that eye! It's definitely worth it!

I had a macular hole repaired in 2013 .I hired a bench like a beautician table with a whole in it to put my head in it. I had to use it for 2 to 3 weeks.I had a General Anaesthetic.Good Luck with your operation and recovery.
