Beta blockers
(45 Posts)I am stuck with having to take these darned things and they are sapping everything worthwhile from my life: energy, intellect, joy. I am tempted to bin them but know my heart will go haywire again if I do.
Has anyone found a beta blocker that still leaves them with something resembling a life?
I have slowly been reducing my dose of metoprolol - very slowly - nothing mad. And unexpectedly I have not had a bout of AF since before 20th December when a 10 day episode came to an end. I reduced them because of the side effects not because I had any expectation that it might stop/reduce the AF.
However I have now googled it and it seems that it is known that beta blockers can cause AF to happen, but can help during an episode. Which is very interesting as my AF had been getting steadily worse.
I am seeing GP in a week and will not tinker further with it but report back and see what he has to say.
Thank you for posting - in same boat! Never felt so lackadaisical! Even thought it could be start of dementia! Two months into my treatment for A fib - tired all day but can’t sleep at night. Need to discuss the side effects and try to find a solution that doesn’t suck the joy out of life! Good luck to fellow sufferers.
I had been on both Ramipril and then Bisoprodol- but suffered side effects from both. Dr prescribed Diltazem as an alternative and finally found a drug that suits. Try speaking with your doctor about alternatives.
seadragon
Prescribed 2.5 mg Bisoprolol daily since 2016. Uncomfy trickle sensation in legs banished by Co-Enzyme Q10.....which may also be boosting my energy levels too....!
Aah! 😧 Seadragon that seems familiar- I often thought it was sweat…or worse
Some people just can't tolerate Beta blockers. Speak to your GP they might be able to change your meds.
I have taken 7.5mg of Bisoprolol, now on 5mg, I also take Apixaban, plus Amiodarone for my AF... (had an Ablation 4 weeks ago) advise they will be stopped or Reduced in a few months.
I have never had an issues or fatigue, with Beta Blocker's.
Amiodarone is know as an unpleasant Drug, that's a different story.
Beta blockers are world wide known successful Drug, only a small number of folk can't take them.
Your Doctors did the correct thing, you just have had an unfortunate experience, millions take them with no issue.
Have you signed up with British Heart Foundation? My husband had a similar issue. He spoke to one of the nurses at BHF to ask advice. On her advice he talked to our GP and now has been prescribed a lower dose and can get on with life. I will add that our GP is brilliant.
I'm also on 5mg Ramipril and Clopidogrel, - me too! A cocktail of stuff destined to wipe me out!
I was told that the -olol pills are slow releasing so it doesn't matter too much when they are taken. I take them in the morning.
merlotgran
Those who are on Bisoprolol. Do you take it in the morning or evening?
I take mine in the morning. I'm also on 5mg Ramipril and Clopidogrel, both of which have the side-effect of drowsiness, but I take the Ramipril at night

In the morning with breakfast.
I was still working when I had these and took them until I left full time employment. Saved me .

Hello, regarding Bisopropril. I have been taking both this and Ramipril and warfarin. for 21 years. 18 months ago I was changed to Edoxoban. The previous arrangement had left me always tired and I think sadly one has to get used to that. The alternative isn’t so good! Since having Edoxoban though problems have started and I have been diagnosed with anaemia because the tiredness became worse. Have you had any blood tests recently? Perhaps some iron may help or be needed or some Vit B complex. ? Good luck to all who are in this situation and are taking these drugs either one or all and a mixed variety. Life for you does go on and eventually the body does become used to dealing with the tiredness and other side effects. If it’s too much to endure please see your GP or consultant. Not everyone is a text book case and there are alternatives. But if I had not had these drugs plus a pacemaker life would have ended 22 years ago for me.

I seem to be fine on 1.25mg bisoprolol, 2.5 mg felodipine, and 2 tablets of Flecainide - the latter is wonderful - it stops AF in its tracks. Been on all these for a long time - no probs.
I'm on similar meds to others and despite feeling a bit tired/lethargic at times I can't really say that it's the drugs - and I don't seem to be remotely as desperate as some of you are. I can't say my lack of side-effects is due to anything that I do or don't do, just pot luck.
I’ve been on 25mg propranolol for 30years. Firstly for high blood pressure related to pregnancies and then for migraines. I’ve had no side effects and it has really helped the migraines.
Bisopralol is a hateful medication. The side effects are horrendous. I could not work out why I had such extreme fatigue (waking up at 11.30 am, inability to have any motivation to move anywhere, the nightmares, hair loss, weight gain and all other things previously mentioned).
We have just moved and there are three rooms that I have not even been into! No energy. That is extreme. The house is really not that large. My poor OH has been wading through the endless packing cases.
I have been asking for a meds review for two years. Not forthcoming. I am due to speak to the nurse practitioner at the new GP practice at the end of this week. I don't have much hope.
We have been at this new lovely house since late November. I have not been outside the front gate, or around the large garden, or looked into the various outhouses. Could this all be down to Bisopralol? Or Apixaban? Or Rusovastatin?
The medical profession has a lot to answer for, frankly.
I was feeling so tired and my blood pressure was dreadfully low, so dizzy as well. I was on bisoprolol after a heart attack but a year later my doctor has stopped it and I feel so much better without it. He suggested that I possibly didn’t need it any more as I had such a healthy lifestyle that my blood pressure was low anyway and this was lowering it way too much.
My husband takes em for stress He's so much better taking them. My bother in law takes em for fast heart rate. He's also happy with his..
As somebody else mentioned, speak to your pharmacist before trying to contact your consultant. The consultant is more likely to reply to a pharmacist. Even better speak to your GP, they will always get an answer.

Luckygirl3 - I was prescribed them when suffering from depression after a big surgical procedure. Prescribing done by a "physician consultant" who refused to prescribe anti-depressants as "they are addictive", - I was treated like a not very bright 5-year old. Anyhoo, prescribed 2, twice a day. About 2 hours after first dose my heart rate dropped to 35bpm. I was barely conscious, husband rang surgery "oh well, better just take one". Took no more, and never will again! Hope you find a solution.
That was my problem too. With a heart rate of 40 or under it was no wonder I could hardly move.
I had bisoprolol ags ago, wasnt consulted just put on it, (by a heart consultant) cant remember how it happened or what but now it says i cant take those in my notes.🤔
My doc wants me to take beta blockers to supplement Ramiril, but bisoprolol i cant take- but i am reluctant to take any at all.Advice?
