Blocked up bowel and chronic constipation

Hi everyone. I’m new to gransnet and it looks the place where I might get help. My 55 year old daughter with some mental health issues is completely bunged up. This is partly a side effect of meds and she looks very unwell. She is not eating and doesn’t drink much and will not seek help. I’m worried silly and do not always handle my concerns well. I feel we are nearing an emergency. Is there anything I could or should be doing. Looking forward to hearing from anyone.

Lactulose works (eventually) for me, but last week I found a pouch of puy lentils at the back of a cupboard. I made myself a big bowl of them plus chopped beetroot and spring onions, and topped off with some grilled halloumi cheese. Gosh! I "went" for England!! So if your daughter would eat something like this, it might help.

Beetroot is really good at getting things moving!

Podula I hope your daughter is more comfortable by now.

I had a lot of problems after surgery. The post surgery medication plus inactivity caused awful bunging up symptoms. I initially took Dioctyl. Gentle and did the trick. I now have a daily dose of Clean Greens from Rheal superfoods. Amazing stuff. A good intake of water and exercise - walking - gets the system moving too!

My S is at this moment taking my GS to the Dr.
He suffers greatly from constipation.
He is autistic so his very limited diet causes this and it is very hard to persuade him to eat healthily.
He is now having bleeding so needs to change.
I am curious as to what will be said/done.

while it's alright to take something strong to completely empty your bowel.
if you take a gentle laxative everynight you can turn everything into 'sludge' that will not move along the intestine as it should, this can cause impaction! happened to my brother.
I have a 'slow transit bowel' and go every three days.. I had to swallow some capsules which they traced through me. I eat cauliflower a lot now and resist taking 'something ' to hurry it up unless nothing after three days. just my thought on the subject

Overthinking - I too am master at overthinking my bowel habits 😂

My husband and all his extended family really struggle to go without a really large laxative and refuse to leave home if they don’t go. They eat fruit, fibre and so on but never feel the need to go. I have no interest in bowl habits and unfortunately go every day at 10. Are they overthinking it?

I had this a while ago after being prescribed some strong painkillers.

I hope all will be okay with your daugher.

It is the most uncomfortable thing I have ever experienced - I was desperate to go but no matter how long I sat on the toilet my bowels wouldn't move!

I recently had a bout of food poisoning . Since then, I have something like IBS - constipation. So I’ve started having a few prunes daily

Hedgehog2908 Mon 10-Mar-25 18:08:19

I suffer with this. My GP told me to eat 7 prunes a day and this has worked. I mix them into yoghurt or porridge. If I miss a day I notice the difference.

I had two days in hospital due to effects of co-codamol and dehydration caused an bowel blockage Awful pain and experience! Prune juice is good to begin with plus lactulose and plenty of fluids ! Sort out the meds!!

Seek medical help now.

Try lactilose from the chemist. It’s gentle and always works.

PS. I bought from Amazon but also Holland & Barratt possibly stock. Google it for more information. Good Luck in your quest.

Hi. I have had great difficulty in this area! A Gastro Consultant suggested I might try Psyllium Husk Fibre. from Solgar 500mg. Tablets.
It works very well. A natural product and comes in a powder that you can put on cereal/yoghurts/ or whatever you think she can eat. Maybe investigate. Not nice for her to be in such distress.

Lactose is good but is an osmotic laxative so must be taken with plenty of water. Micralax micro enema too. Good luck

I would suggest she needs to be seen as soon as possible. Possible effect of being so constipated is a burst bowel which could lead to sepsis or a stoma.

My husband loves liquorice and had so much of it in one go that it literally had the undesirable affect of clearing him out in a big way on board a ship once! The hazard team were called and hubby was quarantined for fear of his symptoms being norovirus. He was tested but it wasn't. But he happily stayed "in quarantine" in case guests queried why he was let off the hook soon. It was sea days so it was fine.

Liqurice helps me if I'm constipated.

Get your daughter to eat it and see if it moves things. Not the allsorts liquorice though as it is too sugary.

Hello Dietitian here! If your daughters mental health is causing concern and she is unable to care for herself or putting herself at risk then I would contact her GP as a matter of urgency. She may require a more medical approach to alleviating her constipation, which will be being made worse by the fact she isn't eating as there is nothing to stimulate the gut to move things along.

2 x kiwi fruits per day are great at helping constipation without causing rushing to the toilet or excess bloating. Chia seeds are also good, start with a teaspoon and gradually increasing by 1 tsp until 4 per day is reached.

Wishing you all the best

Dulcolax or the generic equivalent is almost certainly what your GP would prescribe in the first instance, and you can buy it over the counter. Read the instructions, make sure your daughter drinks plenty of water and keeps close to the loo. It cleared my horribly impacted stool in about 24 hours - not fun at the time but much better afterwards!

Was it the oil in cod liver oil which helped constipation? Apart from the plenty of vitamins in it and in the malt for children in the post war years.

Olive oil is recommended foŕ a healthy gut. A relation born in a mediterranean country would drink a dessert spoon of good olive oil a day and lived to be in her 90s.

No, it was the concentrated syrup of figs.
