Amlodipine and Atorvastatin

Good afternoon

I had a Dr's appointment this morning as I had been checking my BP and it was very high.

I was given Amlodipine 5mg one tablet once a day & Atorvastatin 20mg one tablet once a day.

I have never taken any medication for BP or Cholesterol, so this is all new to me.
I have anxiety which doesn't help.

I am looking for any advice before I start them. I am 65 years old.

Thank you in advance.

My husband has been taking both of these meds for years without problems.

Judhi

I've been taking both for years - and so far they seem to have worked well.

Thank you.

I hope they do the same for me too. Fingers crossed.

We are so lucky to live at a time when we have so many medications available . Last year I could not have a procedure because my BP was through the roof. It was very disappointing having gone through the ghastly pre op process. Fortunately it meant an overhaul of my medication and for the first time in 10 years I have normal BP.

That is so true, others have not been so fortunate.

Sorry to hear you could not have your procedure done at the time though sad

But the outcome was good.

Thank you

Yes we all have something to thank our parents for!!!

You took them from a very early age though. Good to hear you had no side effects.

Does taking the enzyme CO-Q10 help?

I have just had a little read, as I had never heard of it .....

Cardiovascular health: Some research suggests it might help reduce the risk of heart disease and improve blood flow.

Low levels of CoQ10 have been linked to conditions such as heart failure, high blood pressure, Parkinson's disease, and certain muscle disorders.

Thank you

Yes the same here. Lots of heart attacks on the maternal side. But my father also died of a heart attack. That was when my health anxiety started.

Thank you

Yes of course we are all different.

Good to hear your swelling went down when taking them. I have read it's the other way around for a lot of people.

Thank you.

Yes I have been given lots of advice, which I very much appreciate.

Women's cholesterol
Under 5 total cholesterol reading
Under 3 (bad cholesterol) reading
above 1.2 (good cholesterol) reading
These are suggested readings by NHS standards 2024/25
If you're skinny and on protein shakes and dietitian has advised whole milk, cheese and dairy for their protein content, it's advisable to talk to your GP about taking a higher dose of Atorvastatin (different prescription, not more of your 20mg tablets) to mitigate the effects of eating more fatty foods. GP will give proper advice. I have managed to maintain a happy balance still taking the 20mg tablet yet using full cream milk and milk products and weight has stabilised at 126lbs (9st/60kg) size 10 down from 16/18 ( 11st 7lbs) 78kg. I get tested every 6 months and keep weight and BMI notes 3 x a week.
I have ILD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. .

Are you referring to Luckygirl3 post? As she had the post removed as she misread the name of the medication.

Thank you.

I have never heard of half of the medication you take.

Good to hear you have no side effects with taking so many and it keeps your heart stable.

Thank you.

Good to hear you have had no problem with both meds.

I was only told in 2023/24 that I have CKD too since 2014!

Statin not station (autocorrect).

Jockytaff Wed 12-Mar-25 15:12:23

Welshy - I have taken Amlodopine for HBP (thanks Dad) since my mid 30's with no side effects (am now late 60's). I was prescribed Atorvastatin in my late 50's for high cholesterol (thanks Mum). A cardiologist suggested I take an enzyme CO-Q10 to counter a slight aching in the legs which coincided with commencing the station & feel OK.

Thank you.

That must have given you quite a fright when it didn't stop. Especially as like me you suffer with anxiety.

Understandable for you to feel anxious, with your husband having a few health scares though. I hope he is OK.

Good to hear your BP is back to normal now.

My Dr told me not to take my blood pressure until I have taken the tablets for 4 weeks. I am then to do readings twice a day for 2 weeks. Then to see him again.

mabon1 Wed 12-Mar-25 15:08:06

I was prescribed atorvastatin many years ago because my count was 9.8. (my sister's 8.9) It is now 5. There is a history of strokes and heart attacks in the maternal side of the family.

Barbarasmum Wed 12-Mar-25 15:06:39

Your 'good' cholesterol should average 2.7.

Thank you for your message.

I think it is just the thought of all the side effects that goes with any medication.

So it is good to hear what others in similar circumstances have to say.

Allalongagatha Wed 12-Mar-25 15:00:04

It is true that we all react differently to med. I was prescribed Amiopodine because my legs were swollen. They went down with it.

Thank you for your message.

Strange after all those years of taking you started having side effects.
Good to hear you have found another that suits smile

Oh I am also prone to that too. So embarrassing.

Stillness Wed 12-Mar-25 14:54:17

I think you have sufficient advice here about taking the meds. All I would say is, I wouldn’t disregard your anxiety. It could cause the physical symptoms you describe so it would be great if you could address it.

Barbarasmum Wed 12-Mar-25 14:53:35

Atorvastatin is taken to reduce higher than normal cholesterol. I know, I have been prescribed 20mg (one tablet) to be taken daily, preferably in the evening with a non-milky drink, since Feb 2024. It isn't taken as an anti-coagulant so please don't give out misinformation.

I take both the same… no side effects!

Glenfinnan

Thank you.

That's good to hear. Do you take both at the same time & morning or night?

Thank you for your reply.

Yes I was wondering whether to change to decaff coffee and I am a chocoholic. Not good!

I have had headaches, lightheadedness and blurry vision. Oh & the flushes especially the face burning.

I did take both yesterday evening, so lets see.
