Feeling exhausted

I’m 67 and have been feeling crushingly tired and lacking in energy for weeks. I’m sleeping well, not stressed and not taking any medication. My appetite isn’t great but I’m eating enough. I have no diagnosed health conditions.
I wake up feeling refreshed but within a couple of hours all I want to do is go back to bed! I’m usually energetic and do a lot of walking. Guess it’s time to visit the GP. Has anyone suffered with this and what was the outcome?

You may be anaemic. I was like it many years ago, and went to hospital for tests for something else, when they found that I was.

Another cause of exhaustion can be bed mites.. Do you have a bed mite hoover for your mattress and sofas?

I didnt want to write too much as didnt want to alarm the op unnecessarily.
I will DM anyone who wants me to.

I will DM you.

Thanks re thought of DM....yep.

Personally I've had so many years to get used to the idea "Loads and loads of heart problems - both sides of my family" that it doesn't unduly worry me per se. I've been told of lots of my family having them and one comment was "That uncle was out on the dance floor dancing and he hit the floor - and ...he was gone. That was that". I was meant to take that as "Nowt to worry about if that's what happens come the time" and the only cause for concern basically after hearing that is in case some well-meaning person there wanted to be a "hero" and started doing some resuscitation on me. I've told everyone - "Don't dare try to be a hero at my expense - and if I keel over dead, then I keel over dead and just leave me to it. Do NOT try and resuscitate me - or I'll be swearing your head off as the first thing I do telling you off for that". There's a lot worse ways to go from what I can see - and right now I admire someone younger than me that I'm on friendly terms with - as she got told "Cancer - and it's killing you. You're terminal" and that was pretty much the first she knew - but she's taking life by the horns and doing a Swedish death cleanse/getting what enjoyment she can from life and being extremely open with everyone about it all". So imo - as far as I'm concerned - heart stuff....no big deal (as long as I don't get the "well-meaning wanna be hero/heroine" nearby).

I had Covid (for first time) in August and have been feeling fatigued ever since. I guess it is long Covid and old age.

Thank you all. I’ve sent in an eConsult to the HP and am waiting to hear back. Felt a bit better today by keeping myself busy.

Always a good idea to ask your GP for a blood test. It could very well be the time of year and the lack of sunshine during the long, Winter months, but best to put your mind at rest. 🤞

I am another saying get yourself checked out.

A friend of mine kept saying they were feeling tired, and was it normal?
I said it was difficult to say, me not being her, but it didnt sound quite right[for her].

She got checked out and had two heart problems.

Wondering what those heart problems are that are making your friend so tired? That's another thing I'm wondering about personally - as I can't think of any particular logical reason I'm aware of iyswim. But I come from a family with VERY heavy duty heart problems and I know I'm currently waiting....and waiting (as it's NHS) to see a heart specialist appointment - after a doctor I had a check-up with recently said she could see I'm having a good diet/looking after myself/not my fault if anything is wrong - but "heart.....heart.....heart..." and I was getting a lot of wrong results on the heart tests bit of the check-up.

There is yet another version of Covid rife at the moment. The symptoms are so mild you hardly realise you are ill. It does, however, leave you feeling extremely tired. Have you had a bit of a cold recently?

Lisadoolittle0 Tue 25-Mar-25 18:04:30

Perhaps ask for thyroid and Full Blood Count tests. Both have caused me fatigue.
Liver function useful. Look at Elecroltes for instance. Take care❤️❤️❤️❤️

I mentioned this to my doctor the other day and he immediately said we will do a blood test and check to see if you need some B12. I get up at 5 every morning, when my tum wakes up as I have diverticulosis, I try to do as much as I can before about 11 when we stop for a bite to eat, after that I just flake out exhausted, a quick nap and I am good to go. I suppose as in my 80th year , it is not too bad.

Gingster Tue 25-Mar-25 08:27:44

It’s been a long cold winter without much sunshine.
Get checked out but I think the Spring will get our ‘spring’ back.

As an aside, but maybe not, and I wouldnt know the significance anyway, do those who feel tired all the time, have rest and it improves?

TwinLolly Mon 24-Mar-25 19:58:52

Gosh, I know the feeling.. It's crushing and at times my body feels like it wants to sink lower than the floor. Blood tests have been fine. Ditto vitamin levels.

sazz1 Mon 24-Mar-25 18:43:28

My OH is tired all the time. He went to donate blood but was refused due to anaemia. Saw GP who is repeating blood tests in a month, but told him not to take iron meds! We eat a very good diet including liver, beef, chicken broccoli citrus fruit etc every week so I am worried but haven't told him.
OP see your doctor xx

I was the same, get up in the morning and do just one thing and then have to go back to bed and sleep. It was lack of iron, in fact it was so low I qualified for an infusion of iron given over two weeks. Felt like Wonder Woman afterwards. Also lack of the sunshine vitamin was another reason.

Cateq Mon 24-Mar-25 16:56:09

I had the same issues with low energy and all encompassing tiredness, my GP advised it was a side effect of my medication. After struggling for months I gave in and retired early doing what I can on the good days and the off days just rest. I had loads of blood tests including thyroid, but nothing indicated a problem so have had to accept this is how my life will be going forward.

KaazaK Mon 24-Mar-25 16:37:33

I’m so glad I’m not the only one with this problem!! Last year or so feeling increasingly lacking in energy. I thorough bloods done very recently - all clear. I have no problem sleeping. I am on quite a lot of medication but have been so for the past 5 years and it’s not affected me like this before. Only got a small house but doing housework just exhausts me, changing my bed is a killer!! I have 2 dogs. Walking was a great pleasure, now it’s to be endured!! Anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

MayBee70 Mon 24-Mar-25 16:34:24

If I haven’t had enough sleep I might as well go straight back to bed because I can’t function. I feel so tired sometimes I think that I could lie down on the floor wherever I am and go straight back to sleep. I do, however, also suffer from motivational tiredness when I’m faced with a mountain of stuff that I just don’t want to do.

Greciangirl Mon 24-Mar-25 16:29:48

Well. I am 80 years old and I don’t get enough sleep.
I have difficulty getting of to sleep sometimes and I always wake early and can’t get back to sleep.
Very annoying.

I attend a weekly yoga class and after that I’m wiped out and have to go to bed for a nap.
I seem to be perpetually tired.

Have blood tests done, but slightly anemic. No mention of any medication, so left it.

LaCrepescule Mon 24-Mar-25 15:30:02

I’ve been retired over a year and this has only just hit me. But I’ve been making an effort today to keep busy and the sunshine helps and feel a bit less tired. Might get my bloods checked anyway.

AuntieE Mon 24-Mar-25 13:59:09

This could be a thyroid problem, but I think it is just as likely that it is just the end of winter catching up on you.

You say you are 67, does this mean you are recently retired? The change from working to retirement can take some getting used to, on the other hand still going to work at this age can be very tiring too.

Do make an appointment with your doctor - there is no point in just putting up with feeling tired all the time.

Lola124 Sun 23-Mar-25 16:29:25

I had awful tiredness found out I was anemic and put on iron tablets.

Babs03 Sun 23-Mar-25 15:48:26

I have suffered a viral spiral, one thing after another finishing with a grand finale of influenza. Have been feeling exhausted for some time though bloods show nothing amiss. Have you suffered colds/coughs over winter. I think can be very draining as we get older. Book your bloods asap.
