Cataract advice

Had my cataract op exactly a week ago and my eye is still sore, with my vision cloudy and unfocused. I'm using antibiotic and anti inflammatory drops, 4x daily.
The info sheet I was given said that it might feel this way for a day or so, and to let the department know if it was not clear after four days - which I did. I have rung twice during this last week, asking if I could go in and be seen by someone, and each time I have been rung back and told that it can take "a while" to get clear vision and that I must be patient. In fairness, they have asked me lots of questions about my vision, but because I don't seem to meet the "emergency/detached retina" criteria, I can't seem to get a face-to-face appointment.
For information, my other cataract op last July was a more complicated procedure than last week, and I had to have numerous follow-up appointments, but at least I could see clearly the day after the operation.
I really am at a loss now. Am I being impatient? I don't want to make a fuss and put pressure on an already overloaded NHS, but neither do I want to go on like this if there is an effective resolution I'm missing. TIA x

Hi all! I thought I would provide a quick update. It's now almost nine weeks since my cataract op. The pain is long gone, as is the milky, blurry effect. However, my pupil has remained dilated, so my eyes can't work together very well just yet. It IS reducing, but very, very slowly, and is now roughly twice the size of my "normal" pupil. I've been back to the eye clinic a number of times and been prescribed many and varied drops for daily use. The staff have commented on my pupil but don't seem to think that it's the cause for concern that I do!
I've had my 6-week check up at my usual optician's, and been told that I can get away with OTC glasses for reading and close up work.
So mostly good news! I just wanted to say thank you for your support during the early days, and to encourage anyone who is still on a waiting list to have a cataract op x

Oh dear. That sounds awful. Could you just wear sunglasses rather than a hat?

I had a cataract op on my one good eye and the artificial lens was out of position. After five months of distorted vision during lock-down I had another op to correct it.
Ever since then I can’t bear sunlight. I have to wear a hat with a brim all the time. Nobody can explain why or how to help it.
I heartily wish I hadn’t bothered, my sight is no better than before the original op.

Thanks Aveline

Allira check you're still in the list. I've heard so often about people assuming they're working their way up then finding they're not actually on the waiting list. Also, ask for a short notice appointment if someone has cancelled.

Allira Wed 09-Apr-25 20:24:45

Thank you!

No appointment as yet. It is, apparently a centre of excellence.

Grandma600 Wed 09-Apr-25 18:35:12

Allira, I understand and sympathise - I'm a wuss about invasive procedures, but if I can do it - twice! - anyone can. The nurses are wonderful and will take good care of you before and after, and if there are a lot of other patients waiting it will help the time to go quickly. Do post and let us know how you get on. Rooting for you smile

Hi bohemian
Our eye clinic advice is to have a lift wherever possible rather than walk. Certainly I appreciated having someone take me there and back. It was nice to have the company!

boheminan Wed 09-Apr-25 14:12:24

Thank you for your advice

Aveline Wed 09-Apr-25 14:05:44

Allira I never noticed the yellowish brownish tone until I had the first eye done and could see the difference. Nobody had warned me so it was a lovely surprise.

Aveline Wed 09-Apr-25 14:03:44

Oh yes. You'll definitely need sunglasses for a day or so. I even had to wear mine to watch TV.

Allira Wed 09-Apr-25 11:50:20

boheminan
I'd take someone with you too
DH was told to take sunglasses with him to wear afterwards.

Allira Wed 09-Apr-25 11:49:07

Thanks Aveline

DH had his both done some years ago and he said everything looked yellow or brownish.
As I hadn't noticed that at all, and everything looks as bright as ever, with or without specs, I was puzzled as to why I'd been referred. The one thing I had noticed is that lights seem to dazzle more if night driving but some headlights are brighter now anyway.

Aveline Wed 09-Apr-25 11:45:40

Maybe helpful to have someone with you? Even just for psychological purposes.

boheminan Wed 09-Apr-25 10:04:19

I'm finding this thread very helpful as I was diagnosed with cataracts yesterday and await to hear from a local clinic for a date for removal. I'm squeamish about having anything done near my eyes but look forward to being able to see without squinting through a grey mist.

A questions for those who've had the op...will I be okay walking back home on my own after the op? (the clinic's only about 10 min walk away).

Aveline Wed 09-Apr-25 09:52:03

Allira I was terrified before my first cataract op but was greatly encouraged seeing the people back for their second eyes. It was a bit of a sausage factory with us all sitting there blinking after having drops put in. However, as I said the people back for their second eye being done were really raving about how wonderful it was.
They only do one eye at a time with a few weeks in between. I found it very interesting comparing my old eye and my new one. The old one saw things as being very brown and yellow and the new one was very bright and saw things as being very blue. It was great when they were both done. Look forward to this rather than dread it.
The op itself was over in a very short time. Only about 10-15 minutes. I saw clours and shapes but felt nothing.

Thanks Grandma600
I am quite nervous!

Grandma600 Tue 08-Apr-25 21:45:15

Wishing you well when your turn comes, Allira.
Hope you don't have too long to wait 🤞

Allira Tue 08-Apr-25 13:00:39

I hope it clears up well with the treatment Grandma600.

I'm awaiting an appointment but not sure how long the waiting list is here as I've heard nothing.

Aveline Tue 08-Apr-25 12:44:47

Thanks for update. I was wondering how you were getting. It's good that you've been seen, given some treatment and will be seen again soon. I hope it all clears up completely very soon.

Grandma600 Tue 08-Apr-25 12:15:24

Thought an update would be in order...I managed to get a face-to-face appointment at the Eye Clinic. My eye is still very swollen at the front (last op it was swollen at the back!) and I've been given a number of different drops and ointments to use regularly throughout the day, for up to two weeks, and to go back to the hospital next week. Apparently this sort of thing does happen, but I suppose the information leaflets provided at the time of cataract op cannot include everything.
Feel better just for being taken seriously.
And thank you for sharing your experiences x

Coukd you have your optician give you a check. If not I'd go to A & E to have your eye checked. Antibiotics and anti inflammatory drops and no improvement to me definitely worth having a professional check. I've had macular hole with cararact removal and separate cataract surgery with no problems like you are having.

Realky Mon 07-Apr-25 16:30:31

I had a problem after my cataract operation and went to the Eye Hospital A and E department.

Hello - I had my op in 2011 and could see immediately. I obviously did the resting and protecting eye for a day or so but amazing results.

I had mine done privately at the London Eye place with surgeon Ali Mearz.

My husband had his done by the same man 2015.

All good 👍

Happygirl79 Mon 07-Apr-25 14:23:30

This happened to me and it turned out that I had an allergy to the eyedropper they had given me. The optician said it had burnt ulcers in to the back of my eyes. They changed the drops to one's without preservatives in them and eventually after 4 months my ulcers were gone. Don't give up. Insist on being seen. Good luck
