Anyone tried glucosamine for arthritis pain and does it work?

Iam64 Wed 28-May-25 08:16:37

My consultant rheumatologist advised me against supplements. She said if they worked, she’d prescribe them. In addition, she was concerned they were another thing for kidneys to process

I’ve been impressed by the level of personal connection she has with patients as well as her top clinical knowledge

I think it worked for me for years but now time has caught up with me and my knees are getting worse.

I've taken it with Chrondotin and MSM for years, if I give it a break, my joint pains begin to ache and I can definitelytell the difference. Compared to my friends I am a very active 77 year old. I also practice yoga. No arthritis at all except an ache in my thumb joint occasionally. I think it really works for me.

Sorry about your arthritis but I’m glad you’ve found a drug that helps.
So far, only steroid injections and short term Naproxen have worked for me.

There’s always something new to try for arthritis.
I got this one in my health course feed this morning. I’ve not heard of the yoghurt cure before, but I’m hoping someone else will try it because I’m not a yoghurt fan.

They're all snake oil imo.
If they worked then they'd be on prescription .
Companies like health span make millions from desperate people. My mother used to take all sorts of things from glucosamine to cider vinegar. Never made a difference.
I have OA and RA and at first I used to try all these things. Even went gluten free for a while after someone swore it was the answer . None of it works.
The drugs I get from my rheumatologist however, they work.

I bet there was a premium on his glucosamine V3ra but hope it helped.

Actually no, the vet didn't sell them to me herself, just said to get some from wherever I liked!

I've ordered the Flexi-Joints for dogs, from Healthspan.
He has one a day, crushed and mixed with a drop of gravy 😋

There are certain risks associated with taking glucosamine.

I took it when I was younger, whether or not it worked I don't know, but think I'll give it a miss now as my DM had glaucoma and there are concerns it could exacerbate the risk of developing that.

Boots sell the glucosamine tablets we take. If it helps, I know not. Recommended before our TKR(s) and by our physiotherapist.

For what it's worth our vet recently diagnosed arthritis in our 13 year old little dog's "wrist" on his front paw, and recommended that I buy some glucosamine supplements for him 🐕

I do believe Turmeric has a blood thinning effect and also have been told to stop taking it before surgery.
I'm one of those people that if you give me a smartie and tell me it works, I feel better 😂so half the pain must be in my head.

I take one capsule with glucosamine, condroiton (sp?) and MSM. I have taken it for several years now. Just one a day. I buy it in Superdrug. I don’t have arthritis or anything I just take it to ward it off. Many of my similarly aged friends have arthritis though.

The thing is you may never know! It may be genetic, lifestyle, who knows?

I went through a period of a painful hip joint and I thought I'd try Glucosamine and chondroitin. After a few weeks the pain reduced but whether or not the tablets had any part in this I don't know.
My son is an orthopaedic surgeon and his comment was to the effect that whilst there are no clinical trials that he was aware of that supported these substances, there is a lot of anecdotal data suggesting that there may be a benefit from them. As no negative effects were reported his view was to continue until it became evident that there was no benefit. That was about fifteen years ago and I am still taking them and he has since become a consultant in both Britain and Australia and his views remain the same: "If it works for you, take it!"

Glucosamine has no effect on me, turmeric definitely helps as I discovered when told to stop taking it before surgery.

MayBee70 Sun 18-May-25 13:58:24

I did try it but stopped as I suffer from Dupuytrans and it can exacerbate it.

If you are taking turmeric supplement make sure it also contains black pepper for maximum efficacy.

I was told that there is no point in taking less than 1000 mg glucosamine. Which I did, but it made little difference.

I suppose it depends what is causing the pain for which there will be different treatments. Don't let a GP dismiss your pains as just arthritis in old age, take paracetamol, as mine did.

I took glucosamine years ago and found it made no difference whatsoever.

JaneJudge Sun 18-May-25 10:24:42

I take the seven seas joint care capsules that have glucosamine in and I can usually tell the difference when I run out. Incidentally I’ve ran out of them but have some fish oil capsules which I’ve been taking in the meantime and I’ve not noticed this time so maybe it’s the Fish oil that is more beneficial

JenniferEccles Sun 18-May-25 10:11:13

Once arthritic joints are worn out the only remedy is a joint replacement.

I did try glucosamine for a while when I was doing exercises given by a physiotherapist, but it made no difference at all.

I seem to remember they were reasonably inexpensive so I guess it’s worth a try if you are on a waiting list for treatment.

I tried Glucosamine but as most people have said, it made no difference. I tried one with Green Lipped Mussel and it helped a little bit. I have found Turmeric to be most helpful, you may not feel much difference but if you stop taking it the difference is very noticeable.

Glucosamine did nothing for me. I can’t take Turmeric, but interestingly Green Lipped Mussel and Asian mushrooms are recommended for dogs’ physical health.

Astitchintime Sun 18-May-25 09:52:42

I took it for years in conjunction with chondroitin (think I’ve got the correct spelling). When I was eventually referred to an Orthopaedic Consultant for a joint problem caused by arthritis he told me I had wasted my money as it had no beneficial effect whatsoever on arthritis worn joints.
Also, do be mindful when taking turmeric as this can be contraindicated when taking other certain prescribed medications………just saying.

Have you tried tart cherry capsules? I am on long term medication following treatment for cancer and had reached the point where I could no longer get in and out of the bath without help. Game changer!! A few weeks of these and I realised this was no longer and still isn't a problem for me. As an alternative supplement it may not hurt to try them.
I hope you can find something to help you.
