I w as prescribed tamoxifen after my breast cancer operation. I started the medication, but felt so miserable on the side effects I decided to stop them.

But

My cancer was caught very very early. I needed no other treatment other than a lumpectomy and gland removal. The oncologist said at my post surgery interview, that my chances of getting cancer again were reduced to the same risk as every other woman.

So given those risk levels I decided to stop it. But if my risk levels had been higher I think that I would have most certainly continued with the medication.

That was about 23 years ago.

I am certainly not recommending you to stop the medication. That decision can only be between you and your oncologist.

My dd had an aggressive cancer and was supposed to take tamoxifen for 10 years , she managed about 7 years before stopping. I think most people have Side effects. It’s a strong drug.
Think it would be unwise to stop at this early stage and you should talk to the medical team.

Years ago I was prescribed Tamoxifen following a mastectomy. I had miserable side effects and so my meds were swapped around. After 6 months on Tamoxifen, I was changed to Arimidex which gave me different side effects. When those became too much, I was changed onto Toremifine, and eventually back onto Tamoxifen.

After 4.5 years of miserable side effects, I was taken off all medication. This was 28 years ago and I have been clear of cancer since then, so the drugs did their job, and probably medication regimes have changed since then.

Another long time BC survivor here.
I had tamoxifen for about 3 years and then switched to Arimidex with which I had no side effects.
I was supposed to be on it for ten years as part of a trial but a new consultant decided to take me off it after about 4.
My GP tried to intervene to no avail so it was stopped.
This is now many yeas ago.
Good luck with the Oncologist finding something which suits you.
It is pretty miserable to be having side effects for a long time.

I must have been one of the 'lucky' ones. I had Tamoxifen for around 6 months after the other routine treatments for breast cancer.

I had about 3 hot flushes and apart from that, nothing.

I took it for three and a half years when I switched to aromasin (trials at the time had suggested a benefit with switching but this was a long time ago).
I had no side effects from either drug.

I took it for five years the worst side effects for me was the hot flushes.

I think side effects might depend on whether the patient is pre-menopausal or post-menopausal. I was still having periods and the Tamoxifen made them flooding, gave me horrendous hot flushes and weight gain. Eventually one or other of the drugs I took brought on the menopause with a delightful exacerbation of symptoms
