Lymph Node in Neck

I found a small lump in my neck just under my left ear and mentioned it to the nurse when I went for my annual blood tests the other week. She got me in to see the GP within the hour. He said he was not unduly worried and to see him again in two weeks. That was on the 7th July. I got a phone call from the surgery a couple of days later to see him on the 16th July. He examined my neck again and he went to speak to one of the other GPs. To rule anything out he phoned through to the ENT dept. at the hospital for an appointment.
I have to go on Tuesday to see the consultant and may have to have a scan.
I looked on my account on Patient Access and both GPs have mentioned suspected cancer. I think my DH is more worried than me.
Has anyone else had this and what treatments have you had whether cancer or not.
Thanks.

Moonwatcher try not to worry about the "Suspected cancer" note. The system is set up so that the "Suspected cancer" referrals are seen quickly, so that pathway is used to speed up getting appointments. I was recently referred in this way, but was told by my doctor "Don't get a fright if you see "suspected cancer" on your notes, it is just I don't want you to wait months".

What I'm trying to say very clumsily, is we used to be routinely referred quickly, now with the long waiting lists, being referred for "Suspected cancer" seems to be the way to speed things up.

I don't have any experience of lumps being investigated, but it's always better to know what you are dealing with. flowers

Actually I had one just like that a few years ago. The gp thought it might be basal cancer and referred me to the hospital.

The doctor there wasn’t sure it was basal cancer, thought it might be something worse and ordered a biopsy. They put the needle in and it burst.

It was a cyst.

Hopefully yours is the same🙂

Thankyou ladies. Lathyrus3 I'm so glad that yours turned out to be nothing serious.
I will keep you posted when I find out the results. xx

A raised lymph node is usually a sign of infection. Most of my family had these at some time or another.
My daughter had a lump a few years ago, turned out to be a thyroid cyst. My little grandson had one 2 years ago - infection.
Moonwatcher I hope your scan reveals something very simple and treatable.flowers

I found two small lumps in my neck, couple of years ago. One each side of my actual throat. Practice nurse at GP surgery was perplexed, talked about infection, dental problems, etc. I have no sign of any infection, and my emergency dental check came back clear. Was sent to specialist with some sort of special scanning machine.
He checked it all carefully, told me nothing to worry about, seems I have a problem with my salivery glands - but they prefer not to start interfering with this.
So, two years later still have those same small lumps - they do not show, but are very apparent to touch

Moonwatcher, I found a lump under my right ear 11 years ago, it turned out to be a pleomorphic adenoma! A benign tumour in my parotid gland. It was removed and had no trouble since.

I remember when my son was a little chap and I found a lump in his neck I was so convinced I was going to lose him but like you say CrazyH it was an infection he was 6 years old and had glandular fever and so poorly for a while
Good luck Moonwatcher

Thankyou all. I've had an ultrasound and a biopsy today so waiting for results. The consultant didn't seem too worried but they will let me know either way.

I’m waiting for news😊.

Sounds reasonably positive so far🤞🤞🤞

Moonwatcher1904 Sat 02-Aug-25 12:00:51

I haven't had a result of the biopsy but they sent me for an MRI scan which I had last Monday. This morning I had a letter from the hospital for an appointment at the ENT clinic on 1st September. It doesn't seem to be as serious as I thought but there must be something for them to want to see me again.
Thankyou Whitewavemark2. I will let you all know the outcome when I know what it is. xx

Sounding OK, but don’t want to count any chickens yet🤞

I had quite a large lump on the back of my neck which was removed without any scans or anything else beforehand.
I have a 2” or 3” scar but can’t see it and it’s not a problem now.
If you have an appointment for September would assume there’s nothing of concern so try not to worry.

I had a little lump under my ear which my doctor told me to keep an eye out for any growth. Luckily it just went away by itself. These are often harmless.

This was exactly my experience, Franbern. I was told to run my finger or thumb along the jaw line from the lump to the front of my jaw. This helps clear the crystals which evidently cause the small lumps. This happened about three years ago, and flares up from time to time, but has never worsened. I too was on the 'cancer pathway' and was seen within days.

Moonwatcher1904 Wed 06-Aug-25 22:09:36

I was relieved today to find out that it's not cancer. I still have to go to the ENT clinic on 1st Sept. for a follow up appointment. The lump has got a little larger so I don't know what it is or what treatment I will have.
I will let you all know what the outcome is. xx

Lathyrus3 Wed 06-Aug-25 22:13:05

Thanks for letting us know.

Sleep well tonight🙂

That's a relief for you, Moonwatcher, thanks for the update

BlueBelle Wed 06-Aug-25 22:25:01

Might be a cyst Moonwatcher

Moonwatcher1904 Mon 01-Sept-25 17:51:36

I've had my follow up appointment today with the ENT clinic and it turns out the MRI found another smaller benign tumour. There is no need for surgery which would involve cutting from my ear right down to under my chin. As there is no treatment I can live quite happily with them. The surgery sounds a bit drastic and seems a bit unnecessary as things stand. They have now discharged me from the hospital.
Thankyou for all your messages. xx

Good news and now it's all dealt with and you can put the worry behind you. thanks

Back in 1982, my eldest daughter (12 years old), told me she had a lump in her throat. Firstly, I thought she was trying to get my attention as I had just been in hospital with one her younger siblings having adenoids, etc removed, then she showed me - could see and feel this lump quite easily from surface.
Could not get her to GP quick enough (same day back then), he told me not to worry, but referred to hospital. Went straight there to make appointment, due to age, got one following week.
All the worst possible thoughts stayed with me, daughter loved all the attention, could actually slisghtly move lump around.
In hospital, again they kept saying 'do not worry', but thought it best to remove, which they did. Totally benign, nothing for anyone to worry about, said it could reform over the years, thank goodness it never has.
My daughter's main concern was that this op. meant she was not permitted to take part in the school swimming gala.

Glad to hear this. sunshine

So glad yours is okay, but as a note of caution to others reading this thread, sometimes theses can be lymphoma and need investigating.
