I recently moved house and of course helped move lighter boxes and sorting stuff, had few niggles in my back but carried on regardless as you do. I took Naproxen I already had it at home it did deal with the growing pain but suddenly my pain exploded into my groin and front of my leg, I'd never experienced pain like it and Ive had sciatica many times before but this was a whole new level of pain. Long story short taken to hospital in an ambulance while i had to clench my teeth to stop me crying out, lots of tests xrays etc finally morphine for the pain it was decided it was sciatica but in groin and front leg unusually. Who knew? Home after 30hrs with pain relief and I'm confined to upstairs for now not safe going up stairs i have a frame as leg keeps giving way. I hadn't even registered with GP so that has to be done to arrange physio. Now i can't even start unpacking but thank god for my daughter and Grandsons who are keeping me fed and cheerful. Sorry now I've written a saga feel free to ignore me.

My partner has another episode of sciatica and is suffering.

He has been prescribed every painkiller under the sun which make him feel nauseous.

I doing very much if gp will prescibe Valium, although I think they would probably help.
He’s seeing gp next week, I will go with him and ask myself.

Sciatica is extremely painful and once you get it you get bouts of it very disabling sometimes I wish you well hope you get on the mend soon frustrating as you can't unpack the things where you want them

I'm really sorry , I understand first hand the excruciating pain this can cause . I had sciatica 2 years ago caused by a number of bulging discs . My GP referred me to a pain management clinic and I had an epidural in my lumbar and 2 rounds of medial branch nerve root blocks . Sorted it right out . I've recently had a return of pain like you in my groin and thigh and I thought it was sciatica again. It felt different though so I've had an xray and physio and it's being caused by arthritis in my hip joint . I've been referred for cortisone injections and will need a hip replacement. It might be worth investigating whether it's your hip that is the source of pain . I do hope you feel better soon
It's hard but try and keep moving if you can , even if it's tiny steps . Take care.

Get a good sports massage therapist. And do yoga.

Oh Luckygirl13 that made laugh 😂
Thankfully my new ensuite is 5 steps from my bed so with the blasted frame the hospital gave me I can manage and occupying myself changing as many addresses as I can while sitting here. Enjoy this lovely weather ladies.

I cut the top off a plastic bottle when my OH was in that situation. Suffice to say he informed me that the edge was rather sharp - or words to that effect!! grin

DH was just like that usedtobeblonde. I suspect it's easier for men. There's a big jug in our cupboard that we won't be using again!!

It is getting on for 30 years since I had a trapped sciatic nerve.
The pain was intense, I didn’t get downstairs for almost three weeks and even then the effects lasted for weeks after that.
What really annoyed me, was when people said oh I-had that I had real difficulty getting around or out and about.
Getting around!!
Getting out and about.!!
I was virtually crawling to the bathroom taking ten minutes to get there.
In fact I tried not drinking to save having to go, bad idea.
Real sciatica is a dreadful thing.
The good thing is that I have never had it since.

Sciatica pain was the cause of the only time I’ve ever seen my mother cry. Excruciating.

I don’t have any miracle remedies but do sympathise as I’m just recovering from a bout of sacro-iliac pain. It began when I was expecting my dd, who is 38 now, and has recurred at intervals ever since.

I hope you feel better soon. flowers

If you've had an X-ray and it's been examined by an orthopaedic surgeon, as mine was, and it's not a fracture, then it could be a muscle or tendon tear and you do need to take it easy.
Why do these things happen at the most inopportune times?

Allira Tue 12-Aug-25 11:06:27

I know its easy to say but you truly wont always feel like this
That's reassuring!

Aveline Tue 12-Aug-25 10:56:14

DH was helped by very specific exercises. We could never have found them online. A specialist physio is important. However, also well worth pursuing Allira's suggestion too.
I know its easy to say but you truly wont always feel like this. That always cheers me up when I'm in the depths of pain.

Luckygirl3

A first treatment is diazepam which relaxes the muscles around the disc and relieves the spasm and allows healing. It can bring enormous relief. Worth asking GP for this.

Who knew there was treatment other than paracetamol!!

Our GP surgery never suggests anything like that.

Thank you all for understanding Im just trying to find excercises for sciatic groin pain as I'm pretty sure my usual back sciatica excercises wont work for this. Back to bed I go for a nap xx

Be careful what you do.
I'm awaiting physiotherapy.

Did they check your X-ray thoroughly!?

Not wishing to upset you, tanith, but I had an excruciating pain in my groin and managed to see the GP (after getting past the receptionist!). The GP was concerned it could be an inguinal hernia which is in the groin, was satisfied it wasn't but sent me for an X-ray and the pubic bone was fractured but undisplaced. No idea how it happened so I was sent for a DEXA scan. Ask for a review of the X-ray.
Sciatica (which I have too) is usually, but not always, in the buttocks, going down the leg.

Poor you, tanith. Sciatica is so painful. I hope you make a steady recovery and the pain is managed.

Erica23 Tue 12-Aug-25 10:29:20

Oh so sorry tanith sciatica is the most horrible thing. I had the DGC coming to stay last year, I was getting their beds ready when i suddenly had the most horrible pain in my back and groin.
I hobbled about all weekend, it was awful. I took 5 months to feel a little better, hope it’s quicker for you. flowers

It turns out that DHs problem was a disc that was wanting to herniate but the surrounding muscles had gone into complete spasm to try to prevent it bulging. The exercises seemed to encourage the disc back into place as the muscles surrounding it worked more effectively. All v odd. Not complaining though. Good result.

Luckygirl3 Tue 12-Aug-25 09:24:15

It is hell. I finished up with surgery - a microdiscectomy. Instant relief. Sending a hand hold.

Bukkie Tue 12-Aug-25 09:18:41

I had sciatica a couple of years ago having previously suffering for about 25 years earlier. I had forgotten how excruciatingly painful it was. A 4 year old girl in my class asked me why I was crying one day. I know I took over the recommended painkillers in a day but at this stage I didn't care. Some exercises I googled helped a bit.

Aveline Tue 12-Aug-25 09:12:09

DH always had bouts of sciatica but last year he was absolutely felled by it. A really awful and frightening episode. We managed it with painkillers from the GP and booked an appointment with a physio at our gym. It was difficult to get him there as he was in so much pain. However, he was given a very thorough going over and the source of the pain identified. He was then given a series of specific exercises to do daily and another appointment made. Well. What an amazing difference this made. He did the exercises and had another appointment and gradually the pain receded and he could actually stand up straight. One more appointment to be given exercises to continue doing in the gym and he's a new man.
Importantly there has never been a recurrence of his old episodes of sciatica. He can even say that this big awful episode was probably useful as it led to ongoing improvement.
Good luck tanith

Not going to ignore you tanith……..sorry you are suffering and I’ve never heard of sciatica affecting the groin and front of leg but I imagine it is horrendously painful. Well done to DD and GC for helping out and fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. Do let us know how you get on. 💐
