There will be an emergency alert sounded and vibrate on your phone at 3pm. If you or loved one effected by sound make sure you are safe ..

Kate1949 Sun 07-Sept-25 16:06:17

My phone was on silent and I didn't hear it although the message was on screen when I looked at my phone.

Cabbie21 Sun 07-Sept-25 15:59:48

My phone was not switched off but was on Silent. I did not hear the alert. Nor was I aware of it vibrating though it was on a coffee tape by my side.
Fat lot of good that is.

It did not worry me particularly. It came through on his and my smartphone but, interestingly, not on my old PAYG number. There must be quite a few people who still have these devices.

Have now switched it off and put it in the farthest room.

It should still go off, although last time mine didn't even though it was switched on!

It won’t go off if the phone is actually switched right off and not just put on silent.

Should we be concerned that we're getting this alarm? why are we getting it? something going on we're in the dark about?

No, we had a practice alert like this a couple of years ago. The intention is to make sure that it works so that if there is an emergency in any area (eg flooding), more people can be warned by the system. It’s not something going on in the dark that we don’t know about.
Other countries have had this system in operation for many more years than us - we, as is often the case, are on catch up.

I already said all that, Ziplock!!

Thank you Crossstitch I can un-twist my unmentionables now smile

You can indeed! That must have been uncomfortable!

I haven't had any emails warning me that this is going to happen. Where did this email come from, and when did it arrive?

Mine came through as a ‘message’ on my mobile a couple of days ago.

You can only avoid hearing the warning siren if you actually switch your phone off. Putting it on silent will not stop the siren coming through! Just switch it off for a few minutes at that time.

Jaxjacky Sun 07-Sept-25 13:03:58

Out of interest why do people want it switched off?

Thanks for the reminder, Whiff

There has been so much heavy rain this morning I might have mistaken it for a flood warning!

Don’t worry, Sassenach. This is just a practice run so the Gov’t can see if their warning system to the public is working properly. It’s the quickest and most efficient way to reach us quickly. You don’t need to do anything (except completely switch your phone off if you don’t want to hear it).
If, heaven forbid, this should actually be needed for real in the future (to warn us of impending war, floods, terrorist attack and such like): the warning siren will be followed by detailed instructions on what to do next.
It’s no cause for concern today.

I had an email alert, which had a setting to cancel the alert if necessary.

Jaxjacky Sun 07-Sept-25 11:22:25

Ours will all go off, three of us, wonder if they’ll be exactly synchronised! 🙂

It won't. You will need to switch it off completely if you don't want to hear it.

Babs03 Sun 07-Sept-25 10:32:01

Apparently having it on silent won’t work have already looked it up, I think you would need to switch off alarms etc., on your settings.
