Hi everyone, has anyone experience of a trapped nerve in back or leg? Any help would be appreciated

Grannydaisy1 Mon 17-Nov-25 15:04:02

Oh DG45 that's sounds dreadful. Hope something helps you soon. I am finding it difficult to try the right thing

DG45 Mon 17-Nov-25 15:00:32

I was given an appointment with a physio but he screwed
up my hand with his fingers, it was quite a long time ago.
but it doesn't make me have much faith in them.

I have had a slipped disc in my neck since 2008. It was controlled by painkillers and exercises to start with. But it does come back, flaring up, mostly because I am a Piano Teacher,
I play the Piano every day. I recently asked a GP for a sheet of
exercises and she said 'No' . I wonder why I thought. I am seeking help from BAPAM - the NHS have no idea how to
help musicians - I have been very upset - I can only teach or practice with my Right hand now. I was trying to do
a performance Diploma - but I will have to get better soon
and who knows how long that will take?

Watertyger. Thank you. I will try ice and an osteopath or chiropractor are next on my list if physio doesn't work. I agree the pain is dreadful but I think trying different things is helping

watertyger Mon 17-Nov-25 12:57:58

Ice, ice and more ice, gentle stretching and keep mobile. Use a pillow between your legs when you sleep to straighten the spine.
Try an osteopath or chiropractor. Also, sports injury massage is helpful.
This happened to me just before a performance of my one woman show where I use Masks, so very physically challenging. I can only take paracetamol because I have heart failure. I got through the performance - never underestimate the power of adrenaline - since which, my back has recovered rapidly. Such a relief.
Lots of sympathy your way. The pain is horrible.

Grannydaisy1 Mon 17-Nov-25 08:33:02

Thanks everyone. It doesn't seem very clear to me yet what I have. It sounds like a lot of you are in pain

M0nica Mon 17-Nov-25 05:22:04

Yes, sciatica is nerve pain. my MiL was bed bound for 6 weeks with it on one occasion. DH has had but not too seriously.

The pain is excruciating, you have my sympathy.

Coolgran65 Mon 17-Nov-25 01:42:00

Welshy I may be wrong but I thought sciatica was nerve pain.

For many years maybe 30 years, I suffered from hip pain which GP said was arthritis. Gradually got worse until 2 years ago I was using a stick. One year ago after I'd been crying/screaming for two days with pain my husband called for an ambulance. They needed to give me gas and air to get me down the stairs and I was admitted for 3 weeks while they tried to ease the pain. MRI and CT Scan showed spinal stenosis and nerve compression plus osteoarthritis etc. I was in too much pain for physiotherapy and because I couldn't actually stand unaided Physio couldn't help. I was discharged after 3 weeks, home by ambulance so I could lie flat, with a zimmer as a walk aid, and a hospital bed installed. I've been prescribed morphine together with other pain relief.
I am much better although still in pain, a combination of time and pain relief
I can use a stick around the house and a rollater if I go out. Attendance at the pain clinic and their 5 steroid injection treatments hasn't helped so far..
My pain is on the left lumbar, left hip joint, back of left thigh, left calf and into my left ankle bone. It has been referred to as sciatica. Which I understand to be compression of the sciatica nerve.
Hence my belief that sciatica was nerve pain. I could be wrong in my understanding and am happy to be advised otherwise.

Grannydaisy nerve pain is excrutiating and I wish you well.

pamdixon thank you. It is painful

pamdixon Sun 16-Nov-25 20:45:53

Poor you - sciatic type pain is simply hideous. Acupuncture has definitely helped me in the past. And I've also been to a chiropractor. Different things help different people, so good luck finding the right solution for you . Gentle exercise helpful as people have suggested. I find sleeping flat (ie no pillow) helps too

Grannydaisy1 Sun 16-Nov-25 20:20:46

Withnobsonit. Thank you. I will continue with ibuprofen and do nothing until my physio appointment. I also wondered about acupuncture. I will try anything. All helpful advice

WithNobsOnIt Sun 16-Nov-25 20:04:01

I would not do any exercises until you have seen your doctor or physio first. The same goes for massage.

Trapped nerves can be very tricky, not to be messed with and should only be treated by qualified medical people.

I had constant painful Sciatica and a trapped nerve in my lower back.and right leg many years ago.

. And l received a course acupuncture from an NHS trained physio at my local community hospital It took about 8 weeks to kick in. But it really worked.

Ibuprofen may help with the pain as it reduces inflammation.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Best Wishes

Catteygirl. Thank you, think an osteopath could be next on my list

Catterygirl Sun 16-Nov-25 17:56:31

Osteopath fixes me in one session whatever the problem. BUT there are osteopaths and osteopaths. Some may long to prolong the treatment for more money.

Grannydaisy1 Sun 16-Nov-25 16:41:29

Welshy Thank you. I haven't been diagnosed sciatica by the dr but I think it could be. Came on really quick. Hopefully physio will be able to help. The Dr seems to be leaving it to them now

Welshy Sun 16-Nov-25 16:30:27

That does sound more like sciatica to me.

I've had chronic sciatica for over 30 years and I was left with permanent numbness in some parts of my right leg/foot.
I still get lots of tingling too, especially at night.

As Minnieme suggested above, I did take diazepam years ago which is also known as valium but it knocked me out, I slept for days.

Minnieme Sun 16-Nov-25 16:01:07

Your doctor can prescribed a small amount of diazapam which is a muscle relaxant which should help within a few days

Grannydaisy1 Sun 16-Nov-25 15:37:03

Yes Welsh just as you described tingling and numbness also burning in calf. Physio recommended ibuprofen and paracetamol together which helps slightly. I have appointment with private physio soon as there is a long waiting list for NHS. Thank you everyone for replying. You have all been a great help

cc Sun 16-Nov-25 15:14:49

I had painful sciatica and an aching back at night a couple of years ago and went to see a both an NHS physio (no solution) and then a private physio who suggested an osteopath. I went a couple of times and it did definitely help, though it was expensive.
I now go to the gym and have strengthened the relevant muscles which has definitely helped. I do still have some back ache at night but I've found that ibuprofen works for me better than other over the counter options,

Sorry to hear you are in so much pain and still getting palpatations sad
Did the Dr give you anything for the pain or do you have to wait until you see the pain specialist?

dogsmother Sun 16-Nov-25 14:36:57

Granny daisy.
So sorry, awful pain.
Can you exercise it at all?
The only thing that seems to help me is regular exercises, if (when ) it goes I always regret that I’ve let them slip. Must do them regularly and regardless of what else is happening in life.

Pr1scilla Sun 16-Nov-25 14:17:58

I really sympathise. Worst pain I’ve ever had is trapped nerve in my back causing pain right down my leg. Good that you’re seeing GP and physio. Important to find exact cause as soon as you can. In my case problem is combination of arthritis in back and herniated disc but yours might turn out to be something a lot easier to treat. Physio exercises will help .

Janetashbolt Sun 16-Nov-25 14:13:09

a lot of GPs have inhouse physiotherpists, call your GP and ask

newlife56 Sun 16-Nov-25 14:05:19

I believe I have a trapped nerve or a main nerve that was aggravated by a poorly inserted mirena coil 20 months ago. I suffered terrible pain in this area along with palpitations which got so bad I couldn’t sleep at all - so I had it removed urgently 3 months later. However I continued to suffer from palpitations even after going back on HRT. A recent MRI scan shows I have moderate osteoarthritis in my right hip and mild osteoarthritis in my left hip. I’m also experiencing burning and tingling pains on many parts of my body, even my eye sockets! I hope to hear from the pain specialist I’ve been referred to in the next 2 weeks

Pinkrinse Sun 16-Nov-25 14:02:05

I found the osteopath was the only person who helped with a trapped nerve. That plus some diazepam from the GP.
