I think that your sinuses block because they are too small and /or it's a reaction to a normal day's dust and debris .
I tend to wear a mask whilst cleaning or gardening .
Your bedroom might be relatively dust free ,but is the rest of the house ?
It's impossible to live in a bubble .

I agree with Allira .
I tend to get sinusitis at night.
A hot drink and an antihistamine bought over the counter fixes it very quickly .

Failing that -try washing out your sinuses with a Neti pot .
Boil the water for at least ten minutes .
Keep the Neti pot sterilised with Milton .
Don't allow anyone else to use it .
When the boiled water is pleasantly warm NOT HOT pinch off one nostril and inhale.
Do it alternately.
Some people add salt.
I don't.
It's worked for people practising yoga for many years and now it easier with a Neti pot .

You have probably tried these but decongestants are the only thing that work for me. I am happy to say I have had no sinus problems so far this winter.

I would also consider that it may be reflux too.

DH has a persistent runny nose, post nasal drip and cough, worse since his stroke. Currently on mometasone spray twice a day, and gaviscon four times a day in case caused by reflux. It is horrendous at the moment, wracking his body every few minutes, but GP reluctant to try anything else. 🙁. Any suggestions?

Have you had any investigations- endoscopic camera up your nose or CT scan or are you still waiting for these? I am prone to nasal polyps which can also affect my sinuses. They do exactly what you describe when affecting my sinuses and nose. I’ve had sinus surgery (FESS) to help sinus drainage ( mine were partially blocked due to something being too narrow to allow the normal drainage) and I have to remove the polyps every few years.
It was a decade or so ago but I think the ENT specialist tried all the things you have tried first over several appointments, before ordering a CT scan. Steroid drops (from large vials) skirted into the nose with the head back) help me for a while ( since my surgery) when polyps return.

Perhaps an antihistamine like Zirtek or Clarityn might help.

nanna8 - are you in the USA? I don’t think it’s available here in the UK

I take polaramine most nights and have done for years. Never during the day because it makes you sleepy. I think it is a bit stronger because you have to buy it at a chemist and ask for it specifically.

I was interested to read on a recent post (about sleeping with your mouth taped up), that it seems quite a few of us have a problem with sinuses at night time. I am currently seeing an ENT consultant but she can’t find anything wrong, so why then do my sinuses appear to block as soon as I try to sleep? I have tried…(all to no avail)……anti histamines, various nasal rinses & sprays, sleeping next to a humidifier, cranial osteopathy, new bedroom curtains/ carpets/ mattress and bedding, basically you name it I’ve tried it. I wake in the early hours totally blocked, with a throbbing head and pressure building up, my nostrils are clear, it’s all behind my nose, under my eyes, but the consultant can’t find a problem. Anyone else like this? Has anyone found a solution?
