Flu admissions are up by 56% on this time last year.
Maybe it’s time to suggest wearing of masks again?

Are people still having their vaccinations?

Well I had mine and here I am, in bed but presumably, not as sick as I might have been. I’ve had 2 quite unpleasant days but am feeling a bit better tonight.
I haven’t had to go anywhere near a hospital.

I expect there'll be a lot of people in those "token masks" again - ie the flimsy no better than paper ones - though I wondered back when whether it was to "demonstrate obedience" or they honestly thought they served a practical purpose.

As you can imagine - my thoughts were pretty unprintable either way.

How lucky you are CariadAgain that you can afford the more expensive masks.

It sounds as if you think anyone who can’t afford them should stay at home under lockdown.
Personally if thats all they can afford, I’d rather people wore some face covering to retain some of their germs and binned them after use than wear nothing except . . .
Maybe a lanyard?

The World Health Organisation says wearing a mask will not protect you. It has to be 3 layers thick and cover the mouth, nose and chin. Hand washing is vital especially when you get home. Most people do not wash and dry their hands properly. It should be done for 20 seconds minimum with soap and hot water starting with the wrists, working your way down in between fingers, backs of hands in hot water. Equally important is thoroughly drying hands. Most do not do anything like that.

More and more parents are becoming aware that there have not been independent double blind control trials to prove that it is 100% safe for developing children to ingest the flu vaccine. There is a significant increase in allergies, autoimmune diseases and autism among young children and the reasons are currently being investigated in the US. As a Granny I’ve had a good innings and would hate it if my grandchildren suffered any ill effects on my behalf. Parents have to put their children at the forefront of their informed decision making, that’s their job.

I respectfully beg to differ:

‘FFP2 masks offer strong protection against influenza and other respiratory viruses by filtering out at least 94% of airborne particles, including infectious droplets and aerosols, making them highly recommended for healthcare workers, vulnerable individuals, or during high transmission periods….’

We also reduce the risk further by using NoriZite Nasal Spray.
Laboratory studies have showed that the NoriZite™ formulation can block the SARS-CoV-2 infection of cells, in culture. The research confirmed the complete inhibition of SARS-CoV-2 infection for up to 48 hours. NoriZite Spray is a product developed by Birmingham University.

Not many wore FP2 masks even during Covid apart from medical professionals and from what I understand they have to be properly fitted.

LaCrepescule Sat 06-Dec-25 16:42:27

Are you serious - get everyone to wear masks again? Get vaccinated and just get on with it. I don’t know a single person who’s had flu so far and I have a big social circle.

*RinseandRepeat*, can you buy that or is it prescription only?

We’re going to 2 events soon that will be packed - younger Gdd’s Nativity, and elder Gdd’s big 🎄choir event at the Sheldonian theatre in Oxford.

I did have flu just once, over Christmas, it knocked my stuffing right out for over 3 weeks, and I was a lot younger then! Not anxious to repeat the experience!

NoriZite is available here:

birminghambiotech.co.uk/birmingham-biotech/p/norizite-nasal-spray

And it is available on a well-known online store. The spray has no taste or smell.

Mollygo yes in my area, two main hospitals are full of flu patients....the strains are stronger it appears and did query this in my November post....as my symptoms are still affecting me 4/5 weeks on..

Are the hospitals full of flu patients or are they full of patients with other conditions who have succumbed to flu due to the environment and a weakened immune system?

I know the end result is the same but there is a distinction.

Doesn't look that unusual to me.

I had my flu jab last Wednesday and have been so poorly for the last 48 hours coughing headache this has never happened to me before with the jab I'm hoping it will ease soon

Tokerer Sat 06-Dec-25 16:06:58

It always goes up this time of year. Much ado about nothing I suspect....

Essexgirl145 Sat 06-Dec-25 15:57:48

I honestly don't remember anyone going to hospital with flu when I was growing up in the 50's.If t was to trun ing to something more serious then yes, but not flu.

67notout Sat 06-Dec-25 15:39:57

A local primary school closed on Friday for a deep clean. Hundreds of staff and pupils ill with flu or flu like symptoms.

Mollygo Sat 06-Dec-25 15:35:37

I’d rather be in a room with people wearing simple disposable masks, than no mask at all.
Since fewer people will buy or in some cases, can afford to buy, the more expensive masks, I’d hope they’d at least have some protection.

We call children the ‘cute carriers’.
We’ve both been jabbed for ‘flu and Covid but as my age is under 75 I had to have my Covid jab done privately (£80) at our pharmacy.

Madness. If I got Covid who would look after Himself?

The doctor agreed fully with me but she said “if I were to give you the jab ‘inadvertently’ - cough, cough - I would have to fill out an Incident Form”.

This is NHS England.

fancythat Sat 06-Dec-25 15:08:03

Thankfully, I dont know of a single person with it. Yet.

DollyRocker Sat 06-Dec-25 15:01:54

My partner and me have had the flu jab, we don't get reactions from it luckily & my partner has COPD & I have 2 autoimmune conditions. My parents were fortunate enough to live into their 90's & had every vaccination going but were lucky enough to have fairly good health & ate quite wholesomely. Changing the subject slightly but I read COVID is like measles, the theory is that like measles, it wipes out the immunes memory bank for virus response & this could also be why many people picked up colds and flu after COVID infections alongside the post lockdown mingling.

sparkynan Sat 06-Dec-25 14:39:09

Wearing a mask will not protect you from flu as the droplets from a sneeze or cough can enter via the eye. The only good thing about masks is, it stops you spreading germs.
I personally would hate to have to wear masks all the time like during Covid times
I had several vaccinations for Covid and wore masks but still caught covid 4 times over 3 years.

seventhfloorregular Sat 06-Dec-25 14:24:30

School children are offered the nasal drops flu prevention but only about a third of the children had it done (parents didn't give permission either forgot, couldn't be arsed or didn't want nasty pharma coming near their precious little angels or rarely the child had excellent reasons for not having it) so the virus had chance to go round the class mutating as it went then home to make granny ill as vaccines are never 100%

CariadAgain Sat 06-Dec-25 14:22:32

OldFrill

At least one Scottish hospital has asked visitors to wear a mask. (Also restricted visiting times and only one visitor per patient).

"Asked" or "told" ??? Pleased to hear they are only "asking" - ie requesting and not ordering.
