I need to lose a stone for my daughter’s wedding. There’s so much information out there and so many adverts, can anyone recommend what really helps and what works?

First of all Twaddle, you can't eat calories, they are a measurement of energy.
Secondly, the best and easiest way to lose weight is to cut all carbs. You may not like it but it works.

Another vote for My Fitness Pal app. You can log all the foods and drink, including branded and homemade foods. Try to get a balance of 1/3rd protein, 1/3 fats, 1/3 carbs. If you think you're eating healthily (i.e. a meat and 2 veg, type, diet) you will be amazed how many carbs there are in some veeg (mostly root veg).
Good luck with your weight loss, and keep us posted how you get on.
Don't forget to mix in more activity each day.

I’ve been going to slimming world since last summer. I’m now 3 stone lighter than I was before.
Best diet I’ve ever been on. Highly recommend it

We found the 5:2 did the trick for us. Two days of cutting right back and 5 of eating normally. It's the only diet I've tried which doesn't make you spend every day thinking about calories, and we found that we were eating less on the 5 days without trying. Good luck!

Thank you for very good advice, I might try the free app to help me keep on track. It’s only vanity on my part…also I know that most of my clothes will look and feel better without the extra weight, which I fully intend to keep off!! Carbs are my weakness.

DO, The Human Being Diet, it is a bit low on food, so you can't stay on it forever, but you will certainly lose a stone. It was written up in the mail last week, and the book can be bought on Amazon. It has a lot of interaction on Instagram with everyone supporting and encouraging each other. Then you can follow it with a better balanced long term healthy eating recipe book. Finding Balance by Jemima Prest. She lost on the Human Being Diet often referred to as HBD diet. The Human Being Diet is written by an experienced Nutritionist who has spent years helping people successfully lose weight and get healthier. The following book is by a housewife who has devised healthy easy recipes for freinds to keep fit and healthy incorporating wnough fibre and protein. You can find helpful resources on her instagram page @jemimas.table

I’ve recently joined Slimming World. The weight’s coming off slowly. It’s basically low carb, high protein, healthy eating, although you can have as much meat, fish, plain potatoes or pasta as you like. Our fridge is bursting with fruit n veg! The problem for me is chocolate.…

I have been steadily losing weight since the start of the year. It is not easy to me because l have an underactive thyroid and lipodoema - the fat cells of which are diet and exercise resistant. However, I also have more weight than I would like and don't want to put any more on. I can't afford the weight loss injections and am somewhat sceptical of the long term outcome so there was only one thing for it and that was to do it for myself in a way l could manage long-term. I find intermittent fasting works for me and effectively means I have two meals a day rather than three. I love chocolate but allow myself to eat it on Sundays, along with other treats. Sunday is my relaxed eating day and, knowing l can look forward to treats then, helps me to stay on the straight and narrow the rest of the time. Would this help you, do you think?

The Mediterranean Diet seems to be very supported by clinicians including I think the twin doctors who have diet programmes.

I know you can't "eat" calories. Why do you think I don't like cutting carbs? As it happens, I don't eat many carbs, although it would be folly to cut all carbs because they're the main constituents of fruit and veg. Cutting carbs and replacing with fats or excess quantities of protein won't help anybody to lose weight. It all comes down to amount of energy (calories) you're putting into your body. To lose weight, your body needs an energy deficit.

Both me and my husband felt really fat on holiday last September. Clothes too tight and just not looking like we wanted so as soon as we got home we decided to try and lose weight. We cut down seriously on carbs & sugary foods and we’ve both lost two stones in the six months. Determined to keep it off too so fingers crossed for you. We are very keen walkers and I think being active does help.

The only guaranteed way to lose weight is to eat less calories than you use. And exercise.

Plevey08 Mon 16-Mar-26 16:04:48

I'm GF too with Coeliac Disease and Thyroid problems. I've put on about 8kg. My metabolism has really slowed and I've had to overcome the malabsorption from Coeliac intestinal damage. Nightmare...also found the more I've put on the less energy I have for exercise. I wasn't overweight to begin with but any processed GF food is full of sugar, not to mention the cost of GF foods. I seem to be constantly hungry but aim for lots of fibre.

Nicolenet Mon 16-Mar-26 16:06:09

You don't need to eat less. In fact eat more, but healthy. No processed food, more fruit and vegetables. No alcohol.

My Fitness Pal is a free app where you can log all your calories ( the app has loads of calorie values) and tells you your daily targets of protein, fat, sugar, and salt, and keeps a record of them.

I used this last time I did any serious dieting and found it very useful. You can use the free version effectively, you don't need the paid version. I found the daily target part was very useful, you can balance them out with the last meal of your day.

That's what I wrote, but apparently one poster disputes it.

Eating healthier, less processed food is good advice for anybody, but you won't lose weight if you eat kilos of steak and nuts every day, however "natural" and non-processed they are.

I bet she knows that Petra we all do
Doing it is very very different

The bottom line is that it is the only solution, unless you go down the injection or bariatric surgery route.

Exercise will tone you up but can actually result in weight gain because muscle is heavier than fat.

I had lower back problems and was referred to the local council gym by the NHS physio. I've been going two or three times a week now since last September and have been told that I definitely look thinner though I've not lost much weight, as you say muscle is heavier than fat. I do feel more energetic and have a higher proportion of muscle apparently when this is measured in the gym.

I probably eat more than I’ve ever done in my life, though, and am maintaining my weight for the first time ever. Probably because I’m eating better and am not feeling permanently hungry ( always felt that dieting should mean starving myself). I wish there had been more information and knowledge about diet as opposed to dieting when I was young; wouldn’t have spent sixty years of my life on theneverendingdiet craving the sort of food that I now eat on a regular basis. I find listening to the ZOE podcasts very informative.

I'm in a similar situation. I joined the local gym six months ago and have been going regularly. I've put on 2kg, but my thighs are less flabby and my waist is smaller, which I know because skirts and trousers are slightly looser. I always lose a bit of weight over summer because I eat mainly salads and protein, so I'm hoping I can shift the extra 2kg.

NannyMags Mon 16-Mar-26 16:46:38

Join a local Slimming World group. I lost six stones with them and a stone is definitely do-able.

My GP put me on a low dose of Monjaro, partly because of my diabetes and partly because I am a binge eater. Although I am not grossly overweight, despite my best attempts to stop including CBT, it has been a problem all my life since puberty. Monjaro has really helped and I have lost all the weight from my last binge period when I put on 6 kilos in 2 months. It has been a life saver for me. I no longer want or enjoy sweet or fatty stuff. I eat from by cooking from scratch, smaller portions and healthier food seems more tempting. It's easy to say, "Just cut calories!" but it isn't always quite so easy to do. Every mouthful I binged, I hated myself for and it would just make me eat more. Slimming World was brilliant for a while as long as I did an all or nothing approach but the moment I slipped, I was unable to control my eating again.
My daughter had bariatric surgery which failed and she is also on a reasonably low dose of Monjaro and she has lost over 4 stone. She is looking so much healthier.
I know the fat jabs are not for everyone but they have helped us.
