Mounjaro - One year on I am a normal weight but feel fat.

I took Mounjaro for about 5 months last year ending about this time of year. I lost 3 stones and did everything I was advised to: ate healthy food, exercised and so on. I have stayed the. ONe year on my weight loss has been maintained. I just tried on my post Mounjaro summer clothes and they fit and if anything, they are a little big. I think I got firmer. However, my brain still sees a fat woman in the mirror. I started gaining weight at around 6 or 7 for complicated family reasons. The last year of having a BMI in the normal range has been very strange. Not being told to lose weight every time I saw a health professional has been a revaluation. So why do I still feel like the fat girl in a baggy dress sitting in the corner at the disco?

Hi Rowantree I am not on Mountjaro but I do inject myself weekly with Methotrexate for my Rheumatoid Arthritis, and I Imagine that the syringes I use for that and the ones for Mountjaro are very similar.
You inject into the flesh or fat, not into a vein, so there is no chance of killing yourself with an air bubble. I squeeze up a fold of tummy or thigh with the fingers of one hand and then you just press the end of the syringe into that with the other, the device clicks, twice in my case, leave it a minute and that's it!
Occasionally, as I am on blood thinners, there is a tiny drop of blood but mostly not. It's quick and easy so do have a go. All the best!

Hypnosis might help the process .

Caleo Sat 02-May-26 09:01:13

You are now training your brain to accept the new thin enough Please Be Nice.

Hi all. I have had my month of mounjaro doses loitering in the fridge for months. I'm scared to try it. I'm worried there might be side effects and that I'll inadvertently inject myself with an air bubble and die! With over a year of ongoing serious family problems to cope with, I am trying to minimize health issues caused by my overweight. I need to be strong. Is it difficult to inject it and get going? The GP refuses to give me any advice.

My daughter has had a phobia about needles since she was a child and she has managed it. It is frightening to start with but once you do it once, realise how painless it is, you soon don't even give it a second thought.

If you were injecting straight into the vein, you'd have a slim chance of killing yourself with an air bubble but you don't do that with mounjaro. You do it into the stomach and I don't think I have ever even seen a drop of blood after injecting.

Please don't cripple your health with unfounded worries. Try to imagine what it will be like feeling healthier with the weight loss.

@57VRS my Dr surgery sent out a message saying unless we contact you to let you know you are eligible, do not ask for the jabs! obviously they have been inundated with requests! my BMI was 47 , numerous health conditions, mainly immobile in wheelchair, and heart condition, and I did not qualify, I have lost 4 stone and now my BMI is 38 so it is coming down

Dorisdodar Thu 16-Apr-26 14:22:03

57VRS...I'm in the UK...I take High blood pressure medication and have a BMI of 27. Because of this I was able to get a private prescription from an in-line pharmacy. I don't think I would have been able to get it on the NHS. I've been on 2.5mg the lowest dose for a month and I've lost a stone in weight. I'm feeling good with in myself to be honest and my blood pressure has dropped slightly too. So it's worked for me.

cookiemonster66 Thu 16-Apr-26 14:08:35

@Lesley60 I started on 2.5mg and stayed on that for 4 months, then 5mg for 5 months (which I am still on) but about to start 7.5mg next week

I think it's called body dysmorphia. I've heard this from people suffering with anorexia. What you see in the mirror is very different to what you are really like. It annoys me that people aren't given psychological support along with weight loss drugs. It's a big deal and life changing taking these drugs. So I think at least some CBT should be offered at the very least. Or maybe start a local support group.with others going through the same feelings.

Pleasebenice. Don’t know what age you are but you are never to old for Levis So long as they make you feel good about yourself

Pleasebenice Sat 11-Apr-26 08:52:40

I never went above 5mg. As I said above I think it worked by making me feel like I was in the first trimester of pregnancy. It also turned me right off alcohol. That odd glass of wine in the evening was off the table.

I’m so envious when I hear of people lose weight on these injections,I was prescribed ozempic for type 2 diabetes before it became the famous weight loss drug and the diabetic nurse told me one of the possible side effects was weight loss, I was so pleased as I had four stone to lose.
About a month after that I saw all these celebrities who had lost weight on it but I hadn’t even though I had very little appetite and was eating tiny meals, it was increased but still no weight loss, and because it was keeping my glucose levels stable the health professionals wasn’t concerned, I eventually asked to go on mounjaro instead and that is worse as even though I haven’t suffered from any adverse side effects from either drug the mounjaro hasn’t suppressed my appetite at all.
I’m thinking maybe because I can’t exercise due to pain and limited mobility that as I suffer from several diagnosed muscular skeletal problems this could be the reason I haven’t lost weight, I’m seeing the diabetic nurse next week so maybe she can shed some light on it.
Well done to all of you that has lost weight on these medications I would be interested to know if you did much exercise for your weight loss.

'Lesley60', I have extremely limited mobility, and have to spend most of my time in bed. I have been overweight, since childhood, and was convinced that I would never be able to lose weight after gaining more, and more, over the years since becoming disabled, because I can't do any form of exercise. I haven't tried the weight loss drugs, but tried something that was totally new to me - it's called 'Slimpod', and is all about changing your mind set, which helps stop the food noise, etc. I've been doing it for about 6 months now, and have lost one and a half stone. They offer a FREE 10 day trial, and then if you decide to continue, it costs £49 a month for 3 months, this is a one-time fee for lifetime access to the program, which focuses on retraining the brain to manage weight without dieting. There are no ongoing weekly fees, special foods, or pills required. All you need to do is listen to a short podcast every night just before you go to sleep, although you can listen at any point in the day that suits. I honestly don't know how it works, but it certainly has for me. If you're interested, you can find details here - slimpod.com

To those of you who have used these jabs, are you in the UK? How essy was it to persuade your Doctor to let you try them? I’m 4/5 stone overweight and would like to try but a bit scared of asking . Do you have to be diabetic to get to use them?

Skynnylynny Fri 10-Apr-26 21:06:05

I too started on Ozempic for diabetes and didn’t lose weight. I was moved onto Mounjaro and in nearly two years have lost only one stone. I had to stop using the 15mg dose and go back to 12.5 mg as the higher dose had lots of bad side effects. My appetite has decreased but the weight loss has been minimal. I think it’s because I find it difficult to exercise as I have severe mobility problems. I do chair exercises but when upright cannot stand for long and use a Zimmer frame when walking indoors.

FranP Fri 10-Apr-26 19:59:10

Recommend a series of pictures or a video trying on new clothes that suit your new body shape it takes photos not the mirror for me to see how fat I am.

I kinda had the opposite problem. Always naturally really skinny, (think 7st at 167), I ballooned post menopause, but everyone kept saying you can carry it as you are tall. I still bought tailored clothes as I could only seen myself in that way.

I have just lost 4 stone on MJ and I know what you mean, all my skin is flabby, and my tummy apron massive, so feel super ugly! health wise I am better, less pain , more mobility but do not like what I see in the mirror

I hope you don’t mind me asking but would you be willing to tell me what dose mounjaro you were prescribed to lose weight as I’m currently on 7.5 mg and it’s doing nothing at all

This is, a think the way childhood misfortunes affect you.

At times, I am still the girl standing in the corner of the school playground all alone because the other children would not play with "the doctor's daughter". (They were called posh if they did so.)

Marbelous Fri 10-Apr-26 16:57:08

Pleasebenice I too had this happen to me. When my marriage broke up which was traumatic, I lost several stone in a few months. I was getting annoyed because my jeans kept slipping down. I went into a clothes shop and asked for size 18 jeans. The assistant said I wasn’t a size 18 and I said oh no am I size 20? She laughed and said no I needed a much smaller size. I was flabbergasted (pardon the pun) when I tried on a size 12 and it fit perfectly, yet in the mirror I still looked like my overweight self. I would liken it to when anorexics look in the mirror they see a fatter self.

I know what you mean, I have lost 3 stone thru mounjaro and I’m now below what was my target weight and although I’m delighted, I still find that I’m dissatisfied with my body shape e.g size 10 fits me everywhere but my waist. I’ve yo yo dieted all my life and went on the jabs because I was prediabetic. That’s ok now, but I’m terrified of putting the weight back on because I’ve done that in the past. I’m now microdosing mounjaro - taking a smaller dose than you are supposed to, lots of info about how to do it online. However, the pharmacies don’t want you to do this as it cuts down on their sales, so I’ve had to be economical with the truth. I must add that I’m very sensible and well informed, I eat a good diet, exercise regularly and would not take any risks with my health.

That’s for the comments. I don’t take any maintenance dose. I found it worked by making me feel slightly nauseous for months!

I have had a personal shopper experience to help me work out what suits me but I still struggle with fitted clothes. I know in my head they look good but still think they are not for me. I also got my first ever pair of Levi’s and love them even though I am a bit old for them,

I think that you're going about it the right way, since I've been large I've regarded clothes more as camoflage than as decoration, and you need help from a personal shopper to change that mindset. However if you have a young personal shopper they may not be choosing the right clothes for you?
If I have to buy special occasion clothes I don't use a personal shopper but go to a large prestige department store and have a look around there. The sales assistants are often older, are not pushy at all, and very often have a better idea about what will suit you than you do yourself. You're under no pressure to buy and can try on as much as you like. You may find a different style to what you are used to, and they will be able to assess what suits your new figure and your age.

I've lost 5 stone ( through WW not MJ).
I weigh less now than on my wedding day 45years ago.
I'm 6foot tall , now a size 12.
My BMI is less than 22 ..... and I still see that fat chi and fat lady in the mirror.
I focus on my bingo wings , which are familial and will never go and I just feel huge compared to everyone else.
Clearly I am a lot bigger than many people because of my height but it's a life time of being called Big and chubby that's done it.
Almost 70 and the first thing I think when I open my eyes is about my weight and how fat I am.
Sad isn't it?

alita Fri 10-Apr-26 14:41:32

I lost 4 stone about 40 years ago, I'd been overweight since being a small child, I'm in my late 60s. I'm even smaller now, a uk size 8 but I always seem to buy things that are too big for me, then I'm surprised when I look in the mirror and see how baggy they are.

JANH Fri 10-Apr-26 14:37:31

I too am on mounjaro and have just reached the end of the first month on 5 mgs. I have not lost any weight however my diabetes control is brilliant. For that fact alone I will continue and am hoping for some weight loss in the next month.
