I had the Bulkamid procedure 2 years ago and have been pretty pleased with the result. I had gradually worsening stress incontinence for over 20 years. Tried all the pelvic floor exercises, electronic gadgets, physiotherapy etc. Sometimes it seemed a bit improved, but then I would get a cold and then coughing would make it worse again.
I asked my GP for a referral and saw specialist (after nearly a year's wait). He suggested trying Bulkamid, though warned me it might not be effective, but is quick and safe, so worth trying.
I had to go through urodynamic tests first to assess bladder function. These can be a bit embarrassing but staff are so professional it wasn't a problem for me.
The procedure itself was done under general anaesthetic- in some places they just use local. I felt fine when I woke up - no pain - and after a couple hours, I went home. They checked that I could pee before I left- the flow was a bit slower than before.
Over the next few days, I realised how much improved I was. Next day I lifted a heavy box into the car with no leaking! Previously, any strenuous activity would cause a leak.
Since then, I feel that my condition is about 90% improved. I still wear a very light pad, as a sudden cough or sneeze might make me lose a few drops of urine, but I'm very glad I had the procedure.
Feel free to PM me if you have any questions you don't want to post here.
