polnan this isn't to scare you but please take heart in the fact if it is skin cancer the treatments are better than when my husband had it.

My husband was diagnosed with grade 4 malignant melanoma in January 2001 and told he had 5 years to live . He's cancer was 2.5mm it appeared over might. I was born disabled my husband was fit and healthy. The melanoma was just above his right ear in his jet black hair he had a full bushy beard. When he had it removed they had to go twice as deep and twice width all round and skin was taken from the side of his neck where his shoulder meet his neck so one healed you coukd see in as it in the crease of his neck. My husband had large oval scar on his face had cut his beard down to a goatee as they said not hair would grow in a skin graft. But my idiot of a husband had 4 hairs growing when he died. He always had to be different 😁.

If anyone asked about he's scar he told them he got bottled in a pub fight and you should have seen the other fella. He had a weird sense of humour and could make you believe black was white.

Because he never wanted anyone to know he was dieing or in his words dead man walking . Only me and the children knew. Only when he was terminal we had to tell people and he cut people out of our life who treated him differently. I had to threaten my parents they had to be the same with him or he wouldn't see them .

He died 4 days after his 47th birthday in 2004 at home in our bed with me and the children.

Now this isn't to frightened you . But I am happy to say nowadays there is treatment for grade 4 malignant melanoma which would have increased his life span it isn't the death sentence it was.

Even if its benign which I hope it is wear factor 50 suncream and make sure every bit of exposed skin has it on.

Please everyone check your bodies monthly for any change in moles ,skin tags, spots suddenly appear but dont look like spots normally do and any skin which has changed colour. Get check out better to be safe than sorry.

People think I am weird that I am happy there is treatment and if my husband was alive today he would have lived longer and had better quality of life .

Please everyone remember winter sun is just as dangerous as summer.

polnan my husband died 22 years ago . I know how frightening it is but take heart there are better treatments now. And never be ashamed if you end with a scar on your face . Wear it with pride you have survived. Fingers and toes crossed for your results.

my biopsy was on my nose, and as you may have seen I am anticipating having to have something done.... the biopsy was o.k for me.. a bit stingy, well it was my nose when they put the anesthic (sp?????) in but really if the actual operation goes like this I have nothing to worry about... to answer your question I didn`t really notice to be honest,, Iwould think perhaps half an hour and no, I don`t recall myine being stingy afterwards.. no pain for me,, and I am a timid creature..

When I had my ear biopsied, the nurse handed me a piece of paper on the way out, it said ask for MOHS if I needed surgery.
Luckily was nothing.

Can anyone tell me how long the local anaesthetic for a biopsy takes to wear off and if there is a lot of pain afetrwards?

I am having a biopsy in September for a lesion on my leg which looks like a hole punched in my leg and have never had a biopsy before.

Mine lasted 1/2 hr & little stingy afterwards. Nothing major.

I know. It's easy to say don't worry but one can't help worrying.

Absolutely. I had a biopsy on my ear on the middle bit, had visions they would have to remove the whole piece.
Results took ages to come back. It was just like a fatty, hard lump 😅

oh thank you each and everyone and praying and hoping we are all well and able.

Try not to worry. Best to get it sorted on your nose sooner, rather than later. Hopefully nothing 🙏

knspol Wed 01-Jul-26 17:14:36

I understand your worry. I have a small area of dry skin on the side of my nose it's been there for over a year now in spite of the various heavy duty creams I've put on to try to get rid of it. I am now thinking I should go and see a doctor about this in case it's something serious. Of course getting to actually see a doctor ,if I tell receptionist I just have some dry skin on my nose, could be a problem. Hope your results setyour mind at rest.

I had a bcc the side of my nose removed by mohs in July of last year. I really only noticed it because it started to bleed slightly when I dried my face after washing. If it is a bcc it will depend where it is on your nose and how deep it is but it is a really common cancer, usually doesn't spread and normally isn't a problem once it's removed. Try not to worry. Unfortunately I had swelling post surgery which meant it didn't heal as quickly as it might have done but I don't even think about it now.

There are threads on this. I posted photos that were so awful the moderators put a warning on the thread. 😂
Alison I also thought I would have to have MOHS but I didn’t, the consultant just cut off the end of my nose and took a graft from my neck.
I’m not posting to scare you polnan, I’m posting to say that if you do have to have surgery then it really isn’t so bad.
It did take a little while to heal but it’s hardly noticeable now.
It sounds as though yours isn’t very big, mine had grown quite large due to a Dr. who wouldn’t believe anything was wrong followed by a hold up on the surgery as my consultant stopped working privately because of Covid. As my Dr wouldn’t refer me I was going to pay. After that I was back in the NHS.
I did have the biopsy privately so he, at least, stopped questioning whether I was just neurotic.
I had had one before and the spot was behaving just as the first one had, I don’t think he will dismiss me if I get another one!

I too had MOHS surgery for a SCC on my nose in 2020. Very tiny sutures and honestly no pain. Was just very pleased to get rid of it. Good luck and take deep breaths you will be in caring hands.

I had two basal cell carcinomas removed last year. One on my chest, and one on my nose. The surgery didn’t take long, and wasn’t painful. I had appointments twice a week for six weeks with the practice nurse to get the dressings changed on my nose. This was because more care is taken over the healing of facial wounds, for optimum results. It healed very well.

Alison333 Wed 01-Jul-26 16:13:13

I had a BCC (not malignant) removed from my nose a few years ago by something called MOHS surgery. I was terrified but everybody was so nice and recovery was fast. Just a tiny white line on my nose now.

I know it's not helpful to say 'try not to worry' but I really mean it. You will be in good hands and fast action will be taken if there is any cause for concern. Good luck, you are certainly not alone in this experience!

I think getting older is really scary when you've been healthy all your life. I'm in the same boat, now we have to face the thought of operations which scare me to death!

I'm having a steroid injection and nerve block injection in my foot on Friday. I've no idea if these will help or leave me in even more pain. Also having a cataract operation, not sure when. which scares me even more.

Lots of scaring going on here, but I keep telling myself it's all in my head. I think for both of us, the imagining is always going to be the worst part. I'm just thinking about other procedures I've had done and they were a walk in the park compared to the walk going on in my head (through burning bushes) ha ha.

So just remember they do this stuff all the time and if you keep calm you'll have no problem at all. Strangely enough, I do calm down when the procedure starts, it's the days before which are worse.

Good luck with your steroid injection CN really hope it works for you 🙏

I had a basal cell carcinoma removed from the side of my nose a few years ago, apparently they're pretty harmless.
Mine was taken out under local anaesthetic and I had just a couple of stitches. Initially I could see a bit of a pull on the skin there, but it settled down very quickly and there's nothing to see now.
They did do a biopsy, just in case, but no problems.
I know quite a few people who've had them removed.

Primrose53 Wed 01-Jul-26 13:45:49

I’ve had several BCCs removed. Couple on arm and leg frozen off but one on face cut out and stitched up. I think I have another on forehead that looks a bit suspect so I need to get that checked. I don’t worry about them.

Harris27 Wed 01-Jul-26 09:32:24

My sister had the same on her cheek removed and regular check ups no hassle. Hubby had mole removed eighteen months ago piece took out and sorted. I wish you well.

Aveline Wed 01-Jul-26 09:15:25

Good luck polnan. You might surprise yourself how well you'll manage. Keep us informed.

polnan Wed 01-Jul-26 08:14:23

Thank you Rosie.. but my nose on the side, where it is red.. has small breakouts of blood. pin size.. I am due the result on the biopsy any day now.

rosie1959 Wed 01-Jul-26 07:58:43

It is not unreasonable at all to be concerned but until you get the results of your biopsy you understandably worried. Skin cancer comes in so many different forms. My husband has had 3 so far and it depends on the outcome on what treatment will be needed I can't remember what type one was my husband had but it was simply frozen off. Took seconds the other two were Melanoma which requires more treatment but I have to say the staff in the dermatology department have been absolutely wonderful very caring and listened to any concerns.

polnan Wed 01-Jul-26 07:06:46

what "scares" me is that I am have claustrophobia. I try very hard to cope/defeat bouts of it. like going in a lift.. at the dentist she tells me to lift my hand when I need to... I had a bad time with my first cataract removal, I told them I had this problem, and still no advise, just pushed something over my head and I lost it... I have never shared that with anyone cos I didn`t want to scare anyone else... and that is what is bothering at me. Also I am not good are "sharing" I have to cope... oh dear! LOL what a mess I am... I am telling myself when I get the result of my biopsy I will have to phone them and explain, that is painful for me. I know, silly me.. thank you all you are such an encouragement.

Redhead56 Wed 01-Jul-26 00:14:08

Try not to worry there are lots of positive responses here wishing you well.

chestnut, don't be scared of the cataract op, I've had one done and now waiting for the other to get done,,,oh has had both eyes done, you won't feel anything...

Thanks for that. I think it's the thought of being poked in the eye which scares me! 😱 I'm pretty freaked out about both eyes and feet and am having both treated.

I think we just have to close our eyes and let them do their jobs. Oh hang on, I can't do that. That is what I normally do and it works at the dentist and works especially well when having an MRI scan. Just don't open your eyes during the procedure and you'll be fine polnan. What you can't see won't hurt you is my motto.

Aveline Tue 30-Jun-26 20:53:18

I know. It's easy to say don't worry but one can't help worrying.

Franbern Tue 30-Jun-26 18:47:40

I had a Basal cell carcinoma on the side of my nose, close to my eye, several years ago. Had it removed at a day unit at the hospital, and they took some skin from near my ears to sew over the wound. It was pretty painless and I was able to return to work within a couple of days. Stitches all came out just over a week later.

Since then, have had two other BCC's on my face. Provided they are properly treated and removed, nothing to be concerned about.
