Weight gain

Over a couple of years I managed to lose six stone and felt fantastic. I now seemed to have, almost overnight, put two stone back on. I feel such a failure and am determined to lose it, but it is soo hard! I have hypertension so it is very important to tackle this. But my self loathing is surely out of proportion. I write down everything I eat and try not to over eat, few cakes, no chocolate or crisps, regular exercise. What am I doing g wrong? I hate myself for letting this happen

Please don’t hate yourself, you’ve done so well!

As for the recent weight gain, have you had any medications changed? Are you walking less due to the heat? Has anything changed for you emotionally or hormonally?

Google cortisol and weight gain, might not apply to you, but it’s a very interesting read.

Please be kind to yourself.

Get your thyroid function checked.

You’ve done really well but think carefully and I think you’ll be able to see why the weight is coming back on. Were you for example, on an eating regime that has been impossible to continue long term and you’ve slipped back by ‘relaxing’ it. Or could the same be said for exercise or regular activity. I don’t think this is uncommon. Good luck with getting back on track.

Agree about getting your thyroid checked.

I know it’s easy to let bad habits creep back in after you’ve done so well. I keep a close eye on my weight weighing once a week on Saturday morning and as soon as I see an upward trend over 2 weeks I cut back on what I’ve let slip. It works to keep my weight fairly stable.

I agree with Oreo,,,could be an underactive thyroid, years ago I tried to lose weight ,it was impossible, and I was so tired I saw the gp, who told me that the last blood test I had 6 months before showed that my thyroid had some under activity, nothing was done about it then, but I was put on thyroxine, but it took time to lose any weight, have you noticed your hair getting thinner, or dry skin...definitely see your gp...

Reading your post, what stood out to me wasn't the weight gain- it was how hard you're being on yourself.

I've been coaching people for over 30 years, and I've learned that weight regain doesn't mean you've failed. It usually means something in life has changed, whether that's stress, sleep, hormones, medications, or simply that your body isn't responding the way it did a few years ago.

The fact that you're keeping a food diary, exercising, and making an effort tells me you haven't given up. So instead of asking, "What's wrong with me?" I'd encourage you to ask, "What's changed?"

Be kind to yourself. You lost six stone before, which means you know how to make healthy changes. Now it's about understanding what's different and adjusting your plan- not blaming yourself.

One step at a time. You've done it before, and there's every reason to believe you can make progress again.
