Anti-reflux

I’ve been reading about anti-reflux surgery (fundoplication) for people who have ongoing acid reflux or GERD, especially when medication and lifestyle changes don’t seem to control the symptoms.

From what I understand, it is usually done as keyhole surgery. The top of the stomach is wrapped around the lower part of the oesophagus to create a stronger valve and help prevent stomach acid from coming back up. If there is a hiatus hernia, this may be repaired during the same operation.

I’d really like to hear from anyone who has actually been through it:

How did you feel after the operation?
Did it improve your reflux and heartburn?
How long did recovery take?
Did you have any problems with swallowing, bloating or being unable to burp?
Were you able to reduce or stop your reflux medication?
Looking back, would you have the surgery again?

I know everyone's experience is different, and I’m not looking for medical advice, just genuine experiences from people who have had anti-reflux surgery.

Have you googled the academic papers and meta analysis via Google Scholar?

I'd start there.
Just a quick look details dozens of them.
I'd use the "filter by year" and set at "since 2022" first so you only see the newest results and procedures.

I can't help on a "personal" level.
Sorry

I haven’t had the surgery myself, but I’d be interested in hearing from people who had it a few years ago rather than only recently. Did the benefits last long term, or did reflux or swallowing problems return over time?

I had this surgery April 2025. My stomach had gone through a massive hernia into the chest cavity so surgery was the only option.

I was having such pain with acid reflux as well.

The surgery was carried out privately and the hospital experience was first rate.

The recovery was really hard. It was a very restricted very soft diet which gradually expanded over weeks. I just needed to be in bed a large part of the time.

I was given liquid morphine which I only needed for a few days post op but did remain on paracetamol for a while.

Its really important not to put any strain on the stomach area for a few months.

I would not want to go through the recovery again but the surgery was life saving and I have no reflux any more. It was absolutely worth while and I have no real issues following surgery.
