Mrs JamJam and FlicketyB I completely agree with you. I don't want a higher tax allowance than everyone else. Why should I pay less tax than a young woman who has children to look after and probably a mortgage to pay?

Mrs JamJam. I am with you all the way, and not for the first time, I cannot see why older people should be treated any differently from anybody else.

It seems to me that to often older people are demanding to be treated with respect as contributing members of society, which we are, and at the same time whining because they are not getting all kinds of extras just because they are old.

But for the avoidance of doubt Amatter you don't decide to register if you think you are going to get near the limit , you have to register. I know this because my sister is also in the sewing business and for years ( until she got her state pension) didnt earn enough to pay tax but had to fill a form in each year

Many years ago I had a stall at Leicester market, wait for it, selling second hand clothes and bric-a-brac. Good old days when we were skint, even though happy.

Someone in my village 'shopped' me to the tax man. Fortunately I had kept a book of takings and the tax man who dealt with me was very kind.. He actually said I can't tell you who 'shopped' you but it was someone close to where you live.

They were quite right really to do so, no pproblem with that but I was so pleased I had kept a record. The government are hoping to raise the level to £10.000 before stopping tax by the end of this parliament, so if you are nearing that level, amatterof, remember what I said.

Amatterofopinion- I really urge you to check out the HMRC website on self- employment. You are supposed to register and could be fined if you don't. It doesn't matter how little you earn it's the fact that you are earning if that makes sense!

nanaej I agree! Feels very right wing. I cannot bear it when overseas aid is threatened; if some of us are badly off, there are millions who are worse off, starving, dying of preventable diseases....where is the humanity?

i am a retired dressmaker but i do the odd job for people
how much can i earn without declaring tax.
i am not claimimg any benifits, and earning nothing on savings.

As a pensioner, I fail to see why my age should mean that I pay less tax on my income than a younger person would pay on the same income.

I am very thankful that I have an income high enough to be eligible to pay tax, because I worked and saved to provide that for myself. I will pay the taxes I owe and then ask for the freedom to spend what's left on whatever I choose.

I have taken a look at the website. I , like some other respondants, feel that the 'solutions' posed to enable the government to do a 'u' turn would not be the solutions I could support and appear poorly thought through.

I am not attracted to the grannytaxrebel website. It feels a bit like an offshoot of UKIP which I cannot endorse!

boozercruiser Withdrawing from the European Union is not like resigning from the gym and so saving your subscription. Offering that as a solution to government debt rather than using tax revenues strikes me as pretty facile.

boozercruiser I had a look at your website. I don't think doing away with or dramatically reducing overseas aid is something I want to see the British government doing, even with a view to providing grannies with a tax break.

Why did you cal yourself boozercruiser ? Was it being ironic, because of the implication in some newspapers that we older people spend our money on luxuries, not essentials? If that is so, then you will get plenty of support from Grannetters. we worked hard for our money and saved when we could so that we could enjoy our retirement (if we could save - not everyone had surplus cash)

If it is not for that reason, and if you do like to go on cruises and have a or two, why are you put out when someone asks about it?

Yes, I do feel rather guilty that I responded to jeni's post with a flippant post of my own, and if boozercruiser is still around, I apologise. There was no intention to trivialise the subject of the website, and I'm sure those members who are interested will look into it.

Oh dear, I probably dreamed it.

I haven't heard about him u-turning on the Granny Tax absent but he has capitulated on the pasty tax, so only food that it being 'kept hot' will now attract the tax. One could argue it is not being 'kept' hot as soon as it is wrapped and is no longer being heated. Greggs shares have leapt by 8%

I was abroad when all the furore about the budget happened but I thought dear Gideon had already done a U-turn on the Granny Tax. Am I mistaken? It's very possible because I'm not even quite sure what his original plan was.
