Nice "work" if you can get it

According to The Daily Telegraph yesterday, ex-prime ministers, including Tony Blair, Gordon Brown, Sir John Major and Baroness Thatcher, are paid a maximum of £115,000 per year for "continuing to fulfil public duties". MP Pete Wishart has demanded rigourous regulation of this scheme and called for it to be brought under the control of the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority. Cabinet Office Minister Francis Maude said the "reimbursement allowance" was administered by the Cabinet Office and there were no plans to pass responsibility to the IPSA.

What public duties did Baroness Thatcher fulfil to entitle her to £109,191 of taxpayer money in the last financial year; or Sir john Major £115,000; or Tony Blair £115,000; or Gordon Brown £114,998.17 [sic]? Is it taxable?

Gordon Brown doesn't appear to be fulfilling his constitutional duties - they never see him! Neither does Parliament except on very rare occasions.

Anagram Gordon Brown is also paid £65,738 as an MP. He doesn't actually have to do any thing for it.

I can see why Tony Blair and Baroness Thatcher might need protection – but John Major. The only people who could possibly want to attack him would be disenchanted rail travellers, Edwina Currie and Norma Major. Two policemen always accompany him to the Test Matches he attends. Also nice work if you can get it.

We see so little of Gordon Brown, I had forgotten that he is still an MP.Does he still do constituency work? as for ageing ex prime ministers ,such as Baroness Thatcher, it is outrageous that they should get that sort of money for doing nothing.I can see why she and Blair need protection,but there is no reason for the others to do so. I agree I'd like that for doing very little, but I hope Iwould be too embarassed to take it.
