On another thread debate about Olympians not joining in God Save the Queen.

What would be the sentiments yo would like to see in a new anthem for British people??

Anagram Sat 04-Aug-12 20:39:46

Excuse my intrusion please Ladies, but Jo4--- rhymes to "Daughter", could be - slaughter, or, mortar, or porter, to mention a few.
But I'm a slow, one finger typist (2nd class), so have more time to think! hmm I'll leave quietly! blush

I think that relates to absentgrana's post, not mine.

I like Land of Hope and Glory. I have no problem with God making us mighty and as God is the same as Allah and Yahweh and the Hindus have many gods then the word sort of covers most faiths. Buddhists won't mind because they won't see he point of causing confrontation. The pagans will be able to say the god is the Earth Goddess. The only people who may not be happy are the non-God people.

Perhaps we could change the word 'God' to something else that fits. We could run a national competition.

I like the British Grenadiers tune so maybe contemporary lyrics could be written to go with it..could be a national competition for school kids ..but who would judge!!confused

absentgrana Sun 05-Aug-12 10:36:12

I expect the coalition government will disband the British grenadiers – if they haven't already. So that's a no no.

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 10:37:48

I don't see why, absent.

JO4 Sun 05-Aug-12 10:47:19

I wonder if you could fit the Shakespeare into that tune?

absentgrana Sun 05-Aug-12 10:51:28

Not so that it is singable JO4

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 11:57:09

A National Anthem doesn't have to have words. We could just whistle or hum!

absentgrana Sun 05-Aug-12 12:13:02

Or play the comb and paper… hmm

JO4 Sun 05-Aug-12 12:15:40

absent You would have to string out some of the words. Like This ro-yal throne of ki -ings, this sce-e-e-e-prted isle.

Or something.

JO4 Sun 05-Aug-12 12:16:14

I was thinking whistling too.

Nice to be different.

absentgrana Sun 05-Aug-12 12:16:57

I cant whistle. sad

absentgrana Sun 05-Aug-12 12:17:30

Whoops. Can't whistle.

Ariadne Sun 05-Aug-12 12:18:51

I can!

JO4 Sun 05-Aug-12 12:22:42

I can't sing.

Anagram Sun 05-Aug-12 12:29:04

Mix and match - I quite fancy comb and paper!

vampirequeen Sun 05-Aug-12 19:47:31

What about a tune with a boogie woogie rhythm? We may not be able to sing or whistle to it but we wouldn't be able to stand still. The first dancing anthem.

absentgrana Mon 06-Aug-12 09:50:51

Brilliant idea vampirequeen. I'll vote for that. It would also make everyone smile instead of looking bored, miserable or po-faced.

Frankel Mon 06-Aug-12 20:12:22

Maybe something like ...

Callin' out around the land, are you ready for a brand new beat?
Celebration's here and the time is right for dancin' in the street.
Dancin' up in Glasgow (dancin' in the street)
Down to Brighton & Hove (dancin' in the street)
In old York City

All we need is music, sweet music,
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street

With all credit to the original writers etc. etc. and especially, Martha and the Vandellas
