Sigh.
Whether Assange is a guilty of a sexual assault in Sweden, or not, the UK government should keep their heads down and stop bowing to US pressure.
JA is holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London. Now they are threatening to use some 1987 legislation to use it to revoke the diplomatic status of the embassy. The Ecuadoreans have done nothing wrong.
To do this, I think, would make British Embassies around the world very vulnerable. Do as you would be done by.

Traditional Chinese medicine thinks tiger bones cure some disease or other and that rhinonhorn is an aphrodisiac. And they don't give a damn that both animals need protection from hunters.

So I think I'll give traditional chinese medicine a miss, thanks all the same.

Even if adult character is reflected in the face, wouldn't that have to be seen in real life rather than just in a newspaper or on tv?

janeainsworth Wed 22-Aug-12 21:38:08

Traditional Chinese Medicine holds that the health of the internal organs can be assessed from changes in the face.....just saying.
Not recommending or taking sides, obviouslywink

Not talking about people fresh out of nappies! Or congenital deformities, or accidents etc.

By adulthood, character is reflected overall in a face.

petallus Wed 22-Aug-12 21:20:47

Well said JessM

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 21:18:46

Wasn't my fault that swearing wasn't crossed out.

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 21:18:12

I'm --buggered-- blowed if I like the look of him

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 21:13:01

And think of Ann Widdecombe!!!!

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 21:12:16

Everyone I know are just like their face suggests.

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 20:28:35

i for one have a very pleasant counternance smile

JessM Wed 22-Aug-12 20:28:01

There is some truth in what you say nonu of course - if you smoke like a chimney and lie in the hot sun all day, while dieting rigorously, you will have a face like a saggy, crumpled bit of leather. If you dine on mince and slices of quince too often you will get a double chin.
And if you scowl like that nonu you will get scowl lines and then you will look scowly all the time and not just after the wind has changed.
But just because there is some truth in it, does not mean either that you can judge someone's personality by their face. And many people have unattractive faces which are not something they "deserve".
Congenital syphillis, malnutrition, chromosomal anomalies and maternal alcoholism can all leave someone irreparably ugly before they are out of nappies. I could go on.

Anagram Wed 22-Aug-12 20:20:15

Have you seen Jess then, Nonu? grin

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 20:18:55

Jess m I still think you have the face you deserve ,

Just picking up this thread after starting it and then wafting off to lovely Wales.
J04 really - the idea that people's personalities were written on their faces or skull shape was very popular in Victorian times (phrenology etc) It all boiled down to ugly/black/malnourished/diseased = evil/criminal/untrustworthy. If you look back at the illustrations they are shocking. Especially if one recalls that the many people in that time suffered from rickets, congenital syphillis and other diseases that malformed their appearance.
What research shows is that we are prejudiced to make favourable judgements about the good looking and tall and less favourable ones about the ugly and short. I would point out as illustration that Peter Sutcliffe looked very personable.
Assange is an extreme personality - this is obvious as he would not have achieved what he did with wikileaks if he was not. Or persuaded all those people to support him. Or skipped bail. Extreme, value driven personalities may sometimes prove to be to all round good people with their hearts and deeds firmly in the right place. Or sometimes not. We cannot judge from how they look, or, frankly, what journalists opine. Justice systems exist to try to bring the guilty to justice, without wrongly punishing the innocent. Always a tricky line to tread.

Must be something in water...hope it isn't catching. hmm

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 18:36:26

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 17:56:30

Nandogsbody was it 'shite'!?

OR.... 'eff off'!

I wouldn't blame you with either.

Nothing is as simple as it seems. The Grauniad is almost certainly going to be pro-Assange (in many ways, quite rightly) because it was the UK newspaper that published the WikiLeaks material. There is always the issue of a potential venomous and vengeful legal case in the US. However, although there is no suggestion that Assange is a serial rapist or even an unsavoury groper, unlike a well-known figure (DSK) mentioned earlier, that doesn't mean the allegations are automatically invalid or that they shouldn't be pursued. (Let me remind you of the black cab driver who spent years raping women because the police didn't believe that a man with "the knowledge" would do such a thing.) He is a slippery creature – perhaps he has to be to run WickiLeaks in the first place – and he is perfectly willing to be less than completely open with the truth about himself.

Of course, it is absurd to suggest that if you are innocent, you have nothing to fear but please remember we are talking about Sweden which I would suggest is a far more civilized and rational country than this one and certainly one that spends a lot less time than the UK hanging on to the US's coat tails.

Just for the record, I profoundly hope that Assange is innocent of the alleged assaults.

Nonu Wed 22-Aug-12 17:50:06

Nanadogsbody what is the difference between an expletive and a swear word ? {grin]

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 17:38:26

Feel free! grin

Nanadogsbody Wed 22-Aug-12 17:37:00

Thanks for the permission to carry on!

JO4 Wed 22-Aug-12 17:35:19

And he should go to Sweden to answer the sexual offences charges there. There is no reason to believe he will be deported on to the US.

jeni Wed 22-Aug-12 17:33:46

Sounds quite a reasonable article. But like Pythagoras ' I abstain from beans'
