Do you believe the allegations that he groomed underage girls for sex and if so, do you hold accountable those in the media/BBC et al who heard rumours, had suspicions, saw evidence etc., but said nothing (probably to protect their careers)?

Personally, I always thought he was weird - even going back as far as schooldays when he was an up and coming DJ. I wouldn't have been at all surprised if all this had come out years ago and maybe it should.

absent ????

absentgrana Thu 11-Oct-12 09:14:48

Oh Marelli I didn't. grin

Marelli Thu 11-Oct-12 09:13:21

Oh absent - how on earth did you control yourself when you heard that?

Nanadogsbody Thu 11-Oct-12 08:06:20

I got the impression from Chris Patten's interview on TV news last night that he was struggling with this too. His words were PC, but the tone he used and his facial expression contradicted them.

I AGREE absent

merlotgran Strictly speaking there is no need to strip JS of his knighthood as it died with him. That's slightly different from Lester Piggot.

I was shocked yesterday evening when having an end-of-day drink with Mr absent to overhear a conversation between two men, one somewhere in his seventies and the other about thirty/forty something. Both felt that the allegations about Jimmy Saville couldn't possibly be true because of his charity work and both felt that if the women concerned didn't say something at the time, they have no right to say anything now that the man is dead and thus blight his reputation. Exactly the reasons why he got away with it for so long.

Think relichunter has popped in Lil's bar for a drink!! smile

whenim64 Wed 10-Oct-12 20:56:53

Hi relichunter. How did you come across Gransnet? Are you a grandparent, too? Join in or just lurk and see how the conversations develop smile

Greatnan Wed 10-Oct-12 20:35:41

relichunter, just find something that interests you in the topics and click on that thread. If you want say something, click on 'comment', post your remarks , then click 'Post message' at the bottom. If you want to speak to somebody one to one, you can find a post from them and click on 'private message' to the right of the bar with their name on it. You will soon get used to it. You could start by introducing yourself, and making a Profile.

Elegran Wed 10-Oct-12 20:30:37

It is not realy 1 to 1 relichunter it is everyone posting messages all together in a conversation. I think if you want 1 to 1 you need a different site.

Ana Wed 10-Oct-12 20:10:57

I think you're on the wrong site, relichunter.

relichunter Wed 10-Oct-12 20:07:55

Good point, well made merlot and at the risk of wrath, I think that what JS is alledged to have done, it is a far greater crime than LP. Yes, I realise that evasion of tax in a way affects us all, but abuse of the young is (imo) far worse.

I heard on the news today that a building that was named the "Savile Centre" (or something like that) was to be renamed.

I just wish that all this had come out before the horrible man died, and that he had been charged and made to stand trial.

merlotgran Wed 10-Oct-12 19:42:42

I was listening to Jeremy Vine today on my way to a poultry auction and heard somebody say that Jimmy Savile should not be posthumously stripped of his knighthood because it was awarded for services to charity and he did a great deal of fund raising for various charities. TRUE....but if that's the case, Lester Piggot did not get his knighthood for services to the Inland Revenue but for services to the racing industry. SO.... given that he served time for the offence....why can't he have it back? hmm

Louis Theroux was mentioned in this post last week, specki

I remember that programme, specki4eyes. Savile came over as very arrogant.

specki4eyes Tue 09-Oct-12 20:41:49

I'm wondering why no-one has mentioned the Louis Theroux programme made about J S some years ago. Louis would spend a weekend or so with his subjects - most memorable Neil & Christine Hamilton; Ann Widdecombe and for me, the one about Jimmy Savile because I always found him creepy and this programme confirmed it. Finding him creepy made me feel quite bad when I thought about all his charity work. Now his motivation for that is being revealed. He came across as fearful, guarded and uptight. Louis picked up on his penchant for keeping his mother's clothes and JS boasted about only needing one pair of underpants because he washed them out every night in his shower. Yuk.

annodomini Tue 09-Oct-12 19:42:10

There must have been some pretty sturdy pallbearers available for his funeral!

crimson Tue 09-Oct-12 18:51:50

I read about the concrete recently and wondered about that. Seemed a strange thing to do. Did he foresee these allegations coming to light perhaps?

Greatnan Tue 09-Oct-12 18:47:23

I find Freddie Starr unconvincing. What on earth does a 34-year old fiancee see in him (apart from the obvious). He is another that has always made me shudder.

Ana Tue 09-Oct-12 18:46:36

And apparently his body was entombed in concrete to stop graverobbers.....hmm

absentgrana Tue 09-Oct-12 18:40:58

merlotgran Tue 09-Oct-12 18:27:34

His epitaph reads, 'It was good while it lasted.' hmm
