Couldn't agree more Frankel, especially the point the EU is the problem, not the solution. I reiterate a gravy train.

Well, I opposed our joining the Common Market and the proposal for the UK to join the Euro so I definitely don't deserve even 1/500m th of this Nobel Peace Prize. I think the EU Project is basically undemocratic, ultimately aiming for a United States of Europe [USE]. The political decision-making is moving further away from the people, not closer, to the EU bureaucracy who think they know better than us. Now, of course, they argue have to support the EU and move to an ever-closer Union because Europe will become very nasty if we don't. It may become very messy but I see the EU as the problem, not the solution.

I'm not a great nationalist or Little Englander, and I like much of Europe. I just don't trust the EU one centimetre.

I was all for the EU when it was open for the vote because it was to aid TRADING between the European countries. Now Tom Dick & Harry has joined in the EU has got above itself and we are being subjected to all sorts of rules and regulations which our Government dutifully and forcefully implements - whilst other countries such as Spain and France quite happily go on their own sweet way whilst reaping the supposed benefits. I would like to be like Norway - be on the periphery but still have some benefits. And that's not even considering the current crisis.

Given that the European Union was supposed to cement European countries together I'd say the relationship between Germany and Greece has reached an all time low. Old wounds are beginning to re surface along with insulting cultural stereotypes. Most Europeans do not want to become the United States of Europe but those on the gravy train simply aren't listening. The worst aspect is that it's so utterly undemocratic and what's happening in Greece should be a dire warning to us all.

To be fair, JessM, Lyndon Johnson was the prime mover of the Vietnam War. Kissinger was Secretary of State under NIxon and Ford and got the Nobel award for negotiating the Paris Peace Accords at the end of the Vietnam War. Not that he was exactly a 'peacenik'.

Nana grin

Nanadogsbody Sat 13-Oct-12 08:49:55

At the moment the European Union is an oxymoron.

absentgrana Sat 13-Oct-12 08:03:36

Funny you should ask Jess.

JessM Sat 13-Oct-12 07:59:39

Point taken absent - wasn't he the key mover behind the vietnam war?

absentgrana Sat 13-Oct-12 07:57:30

JessM It was debased a long time before that. It's been a political football for a very long time. I still think awarding it to Henry Kissinger was the absolute pits.

I watched the clip on tv when the Committee gave their reasons for giving the award to the EU - I was spluttering after the first few moments. When they mentioned democracy I nearly had a fit. The "democratic" EU have installed their own people in Italy and, to some extent, in Greece. I think this is an appalling decision and has definitely devalued the award.

JessM Fri 12-Oct-12 19:28:32

After Obama got it, not long after being elected, the award was, for ever, debased and worthless.

POGS Fri 12-Oct-12 19:03:22

I think it has probably damaged the reputation of the award. For goodness sake over the last 12 months democracy has been taken away from the likes of Greece. Personally I think it is too bloated, too much of a gravy train and I am waiting for it to implode.

I don't know who any of the other nominees were, does any G.N.?

annodomini Fri 12-Oct-12 17:49:56

If they can't think of a person or organisation that has really done something concrete for peace, they should stop scraping the barrel and let it rest for a year - or more. I think they should give it to that brave Pakistani schoolgirl who was shot by the Taliban this week.

absentgrana Fri 12-Oct-12 17:35:47

Not half so daft as awarding it to Henry Kissinger.

tanith Fri 12-Oct-12 17:21:24

Yep apparently for six decades of working on advancing peace in Europe, bonkers..

jeni Fri 12-Oct-12 17:11:05

confused do you mean the European Union?
If so! That's plain daft!

goldengirl Fri 12-Oct-12 16:55:15

It beggars belief! I wonder who thought that one up. I think it belittles what the prize is meant to represent

tezizin Fri 12-Oct-12 14:06:55

They've probably invented a new category -- "most incompetent bunch of people ever". angry

Frankel Fri 12-Oct-12 13:43:15

Is it April 1st?
