when I worked for a vet in the 1970-80's we had sessions every year to vaccinate pet rabbits. There is a vaccine out there, but I can't imagine how you would go about vaccinating the wild population.

Many years ago wild rabbits passed this horrible disease to our pet rabbits, and they both died. My children were distraught. I'll sign your petition just for the sake of the poor rabbits anno.

It is a horrible lingering death. DH and I always put them out of their misery if they're found on our land. The Jack Russells deal with them as well. Rabbits are a huge problem round here and we rely on the farm shoot to reduce the numbers. Rabbit proof fencing surrounds my vegetable garden. It's not cheap.

I've signed it anno I had heard of it but never witnessed it until two years ago when it was raging in my corner of Cheshire. The rabbits suffer a horrible lingering death.

Neither do I, sadly, but the people who have started the petition seem to be suggesting there may be a way forward confused. They will either get sufficient support or they won't, can't fault them for trying though. It's no different from the badgers really.

Nonu Fri 09-Nov-12 18:35:07

Quite true , cannot see what can be done though . wry smile

nightowl Fri 09-Nov-12 18:26:20

No reason to allow them to suffer Nonu confused

Nonu Fri 09-Nov-12 18:19:30

They are wild animals , part of the food chain . confused

It's not a joke petition JessM, you can read about it here

www.myxomatosis.org.uk/Welcome.html

It is a dreadful disease that was introduced in the UK illegally. I see no harm in people lobbying for causes that are important to them. I have signed the petition.

JessM Fri 09-Nov-12 17:45:16

mmm, people do email some strange things don't they.

hmm

annodomini Fri 09-Nov-12 17:30:52

I don't know, JessM. I have passed this on because it was emailed to me.

JessM Fri 09-Nov-12 16:46:51

Options? Such as? Putting millions of pounds into developing a vaccine and then vaccinating rabbits?
I am afraid this petition may be started as a joke.
This disease is endemic in the uk. Rabbit populations expand. The disease then becomes more prevalent, bit of an epidemic and the population crashes. Those that are left are a bit more resistant and the disease is less common for a while.
It is very unpleasant but there is absolutely nothing the government could possibly do to control this.

annodomini Fri 09-Nov-12 16:16:43

I'm sure we all thought that this disease was history, but it has now hit Cheshire and no doubt will spread. While rabbits do a lot of damage, especially if they get into the garden, I for one don't want the creatures to suffer as they evidently do:

Myxomatosis

Responsible department: Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs

Myxomatosis is cruel disease which millions of wild rabbits in the UK die from each year. It is not acceptable that such a disease is left unchecked due to it being released illegally in the UK in the 1950’s.

Myxomatosis is pure torture for any wild rabbit infected. They suffer severe conjunctivitis that results in blindness, swelling in the head, ears, eyes and genitals, thick pus discharge from the nose (which makes it difficult to breathe), and lumps on the body for up to two weeks before they die; longer in many cases.

If it infected cats and/or dogs there would be a public outrage! Yet, because it infects ‘only rabbits’, who suffer terribly (in silence and mostly out of sight) the disease is hardly mentioned in the public domain. Rabbits are sentient beings, who feel pain and suffer every bit as any other animal. I want the Government to actively discuss all the options open to it to combat/control this disease in the wild rabbit population.
