Gransnet is right wing?

Just come back from the local curry house where my DD, DiL and myself have our monthly girls night out. argument discussion arose about Mumsnet and Gransnet. Both DD and DiL declared thry would have nothing to go with Mumsnet as too right wing and (from a position of ignorance/assumption) castigated me for advocating GN declaring it to be right wing too.
Not so! Said I, in defence mode and thinking of greatnan, bags, myself and others we're definitely to the left of centre.
Was I right?

IMO we should treat all GNs as we would treat out own friends. I can have a good debate with my friends without anyone putting another down, patronising, twisting what has been said or otherwise being unpleasant. Afterwards we are still friends and no one has felt the need to come out as top dog. I see no reason why all on Gransnet should not behave the same.

Yes indeed, when! smile

I can find lots of threads where it has stayed healthy debate Ana, and been discussed with rigour. Gransnetters like MiceElf and Lilygran give us a good run for our money on threads which can get contentious, and keep it friendly - all credit to them smile

We all have a responsibility not to rise to the bait (because sometimes, most times, no offence is intended) in whatever way does the trick smile

Healthy debate is one thing, when, but as Sel says, it never stays that way.

whenim64 Sat 26-Jan-13 14:03:03

Not much disagreement going on here. grin

doesn't it get a touch boring when healthy debate disappears?

Lilygran Sat 26-Jan-13 14:00:21

What a good thing there are so many different topics and so many different threads!

Nonu Sat 26-Jan-13 13:54:45

I also agree with last three posters ! [sigh]

Ariadne Sat 26-Jan-13 08:07:56

I agree, Sel. Debates do not last long before they degenerate into arguments.

Sel Sat 26-Jan-13 01:02:05

POGS exactly. When you see a question of a political natured posed, you do just sigh and think, the responses are entirely predictable, so what is the point? It's not the House of Commons, it's a forum and there's lots going on in my life, do I really want to write a dissertation? Lots of textbook, knee jerk comments sadly.

POGS Sat 26-Jan-13 00:29:50

Yankee

That's probably why you won't get too many right wing responses. You want to argue not debate, there is no point to that it only ends up in a slanging match and someone threatens to leave and the thread finishes. confused

If it was my DGD she would be saying "What's your favourite european country Nana"

annodomini Thu 24-Jan-13 21:19:43

G'net in itself is neither left wing nor right wing. A number of members may gravitate together because they share the same political standpoint and at any one time the left or right may be the more vocal. I would hope that we can engage rather in rational, evidence-based debate than in opinionated dispute, though this hope is not always realised!

JessM But lots of other equivalent European countries seem to work more efficiently and provide a much better standard of living and general lifestyle.

JessM Thu 24-Jan-13 18:03:34

Better than many absent. hmm
