Hillary Clinton

While I agree with everything Shirley Williams stands for, I see her more as a good - maybe great - political thinker, but as SS for Education she had opportunities for reform that she never took, for example, removing the charitable status from public schools, and abolishing grammar schools. As a practical politician she fell short in my opinion. However, from her seat in the Lords, she has been instrumental in attempting to bring amendments to the iniquitous Health Service 'reforms'.

Shirley Williams is the best Prime Minister we've never had.

I think Barbara Castle would have been our Hillary Clinton. As for Cherie, didn't the Blairs have to decide early in their marriage which one was going to be the politician? And Tony was chosen. Just imagine Cherie as our leader confused. I don't think I've ever come across such a supposedly intelligent woman who does such stupid things. As for Edwina, she deserved all she got from the media; wouldn't do anything if there wasn't a photographer/reporter around. Nearly came to blows with her once; literally.

Getting at women, popular media sport. Remember the downfall or Currie and the rapid downfall of Thatcher.
Will HC go for the nomination in 3 years time. I am always amazed at the stamina required for the campaign trail - not to mention the job itself. She will be under no illusion about this having done it with Bee-al. I wonder will she want it.

shock that's horrible!

When she was First Lady (FLOTUS according to White House Security – doesn't it sound like a disease?) she inspired a lot of vitriol from right-wing talk show hosts. In fact the whole Clinton family (brand?), including Chelsea who at one point was nastily described as the "White House dog", came in for a lot of abuse.

I guess Cherie wasn't actually a politician. Perhaps Diane Abbott?

grin

Gracesmum, I suppose I meant the position that Cherie was in, not the person she was/is hmm

Riverwalk. You're right. We did. I wonder if Hillary stirs up that amount of aggro in the States? Or will in the future.

jO5 Tue 20-Nov-12 10:20:52

Oh yes And she would have the backing of Obama. (I would think!)

Riverwalk Tue 20-Nov-12 10:20:19

JO5 we did of course have Mrs Thatcher!

gracesmum Tue 20-Nov-12 10:10:19

Thank God Cherie wasn't more like her, she interfered enough (although to give her credit, I believe she was instrumental in getting London the 2012 Olympics because she threw a hissy fit at the French!) But surely Hillary Clinton did try for the top job when she stood against Obama last time round for the Presidential nomination? Current thinking is that by biding her time, she will get it next time round.
We haven't got an equivalent because we haven't got a President or Chancellor. I do get cross when Americans refer to Sam Cam as our "First Lady" - that is her Madge.

jO5 Tue 20-Nov-12 09:57:08

We haven't really got a British equivalant, have we? Why is that? confused

The germans have got Angela.

Ella46 Tue 20-Nov-12 09:47:22

I think she is 'amaaaazing' grin

What a pity Cherie wasn't/isn't more like her.

JessM Tue 20-Nov-12 09:43:40

It is encouraging that she is going to the Middle East I think. Must mean they have a deal lined up. Fingers crossed it will happen.

Is this woman totally amazing or what?!

She has just finished the trip to Burma with President Obama, and now she is off to tackle the Big One of the day!

She was a wise woman in never trying to take the top job. She definitely has more opportunities to make her mark in being Secretary of State.

And after all Bill put her through, how has she managed to stay so strong?! Phoenix and ashes definitely come to mind. And "whatever doesn't kill you, makes you strong"!

Long may she continue. We need more like her.
