What is gransnet policy on posting what could be construed as libel?

I've been looking at other forums, one I belong to and just saw this about saga, which I don't belong to.

It's this quote that's relevant from the article, which applies on here, Ylil

“There’s a fine line between fair comment and something that becomes bullying and offensive."

Things appear to have become nasty, so the thread was deleted.

Ylil Our policy is clearly laid out on this page: www.gransnet.com/info/netiquette

We aim to err on the side of free speech but we will delete anything that is racist, sexist, homophobic, that constitutes an attack on an individual, or that breaks the law.

We also have a note in those guidelines that particularly refers to religion - we are not a site for sermonising, but for discussion.

Hope that clears things up. Happy robust discussion to all smile

Geraldine - I hope my occasional jokes about the man/woman relationship are not seen as sexist! I do try to police myself as I don't like jokes that are racist or homophobic or which poke fun at vulnerable people. I do sometimes post something a bit risque, but I think any member who might be offended by 'adult' humour will know by now and will avoid my jokes.
As I am half Irish, I reserve the right to do Irish jokes!

I'm sure it's not libelous to criticize Israel - let's hope not!

j07 Thu 17-Jan-13 16:12:04

I am now going to have a quick troll through Greatnan's jokes thread, just to check up on her.

I may be back. [menacing smile]

j07 Thu 17-Jan-13 16:12:21

#not that sort of troll

annodomini Thu 17-Jan-13 16:49:13

Troll or trawl? Think about it...

Riverwalk Thu 17-Jan-13 16:57:58

In my youth, to troll around meant to wander or amble around. smile

j07 Thu 17-Jan-13 17:10:59

Oh!!! It's trawl, isn't it!!!! grin!

j07 Thu 17-Jan-13 17:11:55

Thanks, it's good to get clear guidelines.

What's with all the hashtags j07? This isn't Twitter grin

j07 Thu 17-Jan-13 17:26:06

I quite like hashtags. smile

Ylil Thu 17-Jan-13 17:38:31

Jo7 - Are you trying to say something, if so, just spit it out.

Ariadne Thu 17-Jan-13 17:44:41

Apparently "troll" as a verb is archaic but nevertheless means to roll or to trundle. So you can just trundle on Jingl. But not all over Greatnan's jokes hey? smile

jeni Thu 17-Jan-13 17:58:06

You troll for bass by going up and down a stretch of water with a line and lure behind you.

jeni Thu 17-Jan-13 17:58:28

From a boat of course!

annodomini Thu 17-Jan-13 18:02:20

A trawler 'trawls' for fish and so, metaphorically, you can 'trawl' for information.

feetlebaum Thu 17-Jan-13 18:35:14

'Troll' in Polare just meant - forward movement I suppose - 'This omipalone come trolling in...'

The Saga site is the only one I have ever left in a huff! Lots of woo woo nutters in there... anyway I chose the Robertson's Golly as an avatar, and they wanted me to remove it. Pure racism on their part, although I wouldn't expect them to see that.

Ana Thu 17-Jan-13 18:37:05

I think this is a lesson that applies to message boards
