I am impressed that the C of E Bishops have been prepared to speak out about their concerns on this issue. Its about time they took a stand on behalf of the poor and vulnerable. Whether it will make a difference is another matter.

The bishops can often articulate the feelings of many people because they do not have a political or special interest axe to grind.

On somethings they may be slow to change but in reminding government of the basic requirements of social justice and acting as a social conscience for the nation they have a very good record. I can remember Mrs Thatcher and her government getting very hot under the collar when the bishops spoke out about some of their social policies - and they had good reason, many of the social problems we now have, have their roots in the 1980s.

I would love to see the Church of England earn its keep as the established church by being more vocal on social and political issues. Sentanu of York has always earned my respect for the sense he speaks and for being a man of genuine conscience.

They've got the Tories furious though, which means they've earned their keep in my book.grin

Good to know they have touched a raw nerve, isn't it?
