Is cheap booze really the issue?

Landlords can have their licenses revoked if they serve people who are already drunk. Unfortunately, many landlords still do and no action is taken.

There are obviously a lot of political undercurrents around this one. Cameron wants it but others are briefing against for various reasons.
As an MP said this morning - you could introduce it for a fixed period and see if it has any impact.
I think landlords in city centres should not be permitted to serve intoxicated people. There are laws on this aren't there? and licencing authorities?

A minimum price might make occasional drinkers more occasional and people who find they have slipped into a habit of drinking rather more than they perhaps should every day think about it. I don't think it will make one jot of difference to habitual heavy drinkers or to alcoholics.

I wonder is it the fact that alcohol is so cheap to buy that is the problem? Or is there more to it than that? After all cigarettes are very expensive and yet plenty people still smoke them.

I cannot help but think that the reason for drinking in excess is to blot out feelings of sadness and hopelessness and that the price probably won't make too much difference.

I would be interested to hear your view point on this.
